I ask because a caster in my game tried to cast a spell then tried to move his full speed (flying) from a monster. I told him that he was limited to a 5 foot step and he insisted they changed that in 3.5 because I didn't want to go look it up I just said 5' step and we will resolve it later. So now I'm trying to understand how we both have come to very different interpretations of the rules. |

If you combine them: you get Full round action: required for Sorcerors to metamagic, full attacking dudes from BAB or natural weapons, etc. Standard action include cast unless spell says otherwise (swift actions are like quickened, 1 round action spells take all round). So he could move he move speed and cast. But he provokes an attack of opportunity from movement (unlike 5 foot steps which don't). |

Whether flying, walking, climbing, swimming, brachiating, burrowing, or doing the moonwalk, any creature can move up to its listed speed as a move action. As long as the spell in question does not state "1 Round" as its casting time, the caster is certainly able to move up to his listed Fly speed and cast the spell. |

| TwistedFate08-28-07, 04:32 PM | I'm not a DM but I have a similar question along this exact same vein that came up at our last session. I have a wizard with Fiery Burst feat from Complete Mage. Fiery Burst allows me to do a burst of fire damage by taking a standard action to do it. The question is can I take that action AND cast a standard action spell in the same round? I got to be honest, my DM was a little crestfallen when I did Fiery Burst and Empowered Fireball in the same round and he failed both saves taking 78 damage. I'm all about dealing as much damage as possible, but not if I'm breaking rules to do it. |

You either spend your round doing a full round action, or split it up in to 1 standard and 1 move-equivalent action. |
