I'm about to toss my players onto the Astral plane for some adventures. Now they are going to get stuck there until they find a pool that leads back to mthe prime material.
My question is, since teh Astral is a timeless plane where there is no need for rest food or drink and natural healing does not function, how does spell recovery work?

My guess is that you just consider the caster as always 'well rested'. Thus he doesn't need 8 hours of sleep but he may still only prepare his allotment of spells once per "day". Being that the Astral plane has no days matters little, its still a 24 hour period as seen from the prime material plane.

Oh boy; now we get into relative time flows and all that junk...

Although the SRD says that hunger, thirst, poison, natural healing, and such are negated while in the Astral Plane, it doesn't say anything about sleep. Given that, I'd say that when a character has rested for eight subjective hours -in other words, what the character perceives as eight hours passing, even though no time actually passes- he can then regain spells as normal.

I agree with Millennium...you still need to sleep / rest on the astral plane. I would consider it analogous to visiting Alaska or some other place where there may be extended periods of daylight or darkness. Even in these circumstances where the day / night cycle is out of sorts, the body's "internal clock" tells you what time it is and demands a reasonable amount of sleep at the appropriate intervals.

what the character perceives as eight hours passing, even though no time actually passes- he can then regain spells as normal.I agree with everything except the time passing part. The rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/planes.htm#timeless) say "time still passes, but the effects of time are diminished"

Careful with that last statement. One could argue that the effects of 8 hours of rest are diminished.

I'm going to sign on with the "Still has to sleep 8 hours per 24 hour period" camp on this one. A being from the PMP is still going to feel the effects of staying up moving around, even though no time has technically passed. The question is: Do beings native to the Astral Plane need rest to prepare spells? Since they were born here, their bodies might be accustomed to the effects of no time passing. Just some thought provoking ideas...

Do beings native to the Astral Plane need rest to prepare spells?I believe it's been established that people sleep on the astral plane, including creatures like Githyanki (who are mostly born on that plane). I recall the astral Githyanki outpost in the "Fedifensor" adventure as having hammocks.

Since they were born here, their bodies might be accustomed to the effects of no time passing. To reiterate, time does pass on the astral plane.

Since "food, rest, healing" are mentioned, maybe the timelessness only applies to physical needs.

Now there's a thought ... stay too long on the Astral plane and you go insane from not dreaming. Elves can trance out without sleeping, but humans etc have to be taught how to trance out like an elf to keep themselves sane.

To keep game balance, I would say that it does say that physical needs are cancelled out, but mental ones aren't. Thus, just like an elf coming out of trance, a spellcaster still needs eight hours of mental rest.

The OP mentions rest. The OP appears to be incorrect on that part.
