Spell-like Abilities: x/day [Archive] - Wizards Community

Quick question. I'm almost embarassed to ask, but here goes.

Often a creature or feat with a spell-like abilty will have a rate of x/day. For example, the Communicator feat in Complete Arcane states that it:

grants you the following spell-like abilities as a 1st-level caster: 1/day - arcane mark, comprehend languages, message.

Does this mean that a PC with this feat can cast arcane mark, comprehend languages, and message each once per day? Or does this mean that once per day the PC can cast either arcane mark, comprehend languages, or message?

04-17-07, 10:38 PM It can use each of them 1/day.
In your case, it means arcane mark 1/day, comprehend languages 1/day and message 1/day.:)

04-18-07, 02:16 AM What runestar said. Rather than saying "A at will, B at will", etc., they write it: "at will: A, B, C; 3/day: X, Y". So each of the abilities after the #/day can be used that many times each.

That's always been the way I've interpretted it, but last night a player asked me for clarification and I had to admit I wasn't certain. I didn't find any help in the books, of course.

04-18-07, 09:11 PM The key is that if you can only use one of them for your 1/day, it will actually say "X, Y, or Z", and the "or" is your keyword. For a good example of this, look in the Eberron Campaign Setting at the Dragonmark feats. They grant you one spell-like ability out of a list, and they list it as "X, Y, or Z".
