| Alyri04-14-07, 11:09 AM | Our group has been going around and around on this subject for a while. We are currently at the impasse of; (even with) Heward's Fortifying Bedroll (Complete Mage, 3,000 gp) Allows casters to regain spells with only one hour of sleep, rather than the usual 8./ Ring of Sustanance. You still need to not do anything for 7 more hours. Any thoughts on this? I ask only for the reason that each session is a week long in game and we have to be back by the week's end.(4 sessions a week with revolving Dms. 15 people total playing) |

| Marcus Majarra04-14-07, 03:33 PM | I'm not sure what the question or impasse is here. The bedroll makes it so that a creature can gain the full benefits of 8 hours of rest in only one hour. The only thing it doesn't change, with respect to spellcasters, is the limitation on preparing spell slots that were used in the 8 hours prior to spell preparation. The item is handy, but not overpowering. It's usable once every other day, and the principal use of it is avoiding having to rest even longer to regain spells following interruptions (keep in mind that the 8 hours of rest should normally be consecutive; each interruption adds one hour to the total rest needed to regain spells). |

It means that for 8 hour period you can't fight, craft items, do work, travel, etc. but if you sleep only one hour, you can use the 7 other hours to talk, stay guarding... A nitpick here: you can keep watch while resting, but it's a risky proposition, because if you have to actually fight anything then your rest is spoiled. Then again, it would probably be spoiled anyway, even if you weren't keeping watch. |
| Merestil Haye04-17-07, 10:54 AM | Under normal circumstances, a character needs eight hours of restful calm in order to ready the mind for arcane spell preparation or readying. "Restful Calm" means no talking to anyone else, no skill checks, nothing. Taking a watch is most certainly not restful calm because what you are actually doing is making continual Spot and Listen checks. Reading a book? Right out. Hewards Fortifying Bedroll explicitly states that one hour of use allows the character to ready and prepare arcane spells. Therefore it overrides the normal restriction on having to rest 8 hours. Although, as Marcus points out, the recent casting limit rule applies - spell slots used in the 8 hours prior to preparation remain unavailable for preparation or readying. |

A bedroll of some sort which keeps you in a comfortable sleep for the full eight hours regardless of interruptions. Meaning there could be a battle or earthquake and you will still be fast asleep and awaken refreshed. Its dangerous because if you aren't well protected you are vulnerable...but useful in some situations. |

As stated in the PHB, every interruption adds one hour to the total rest an arcane spellcaster needs. For example, let's say that 4 hours into the night, the party is attacked. After dealing with the encounter, the party wizard will have to rest for 5 more hours before being ready to prepare spells. If two hours after that encounter, the party is attacked again, the wizard will need 4 hours of rest from that moment to prepare spells. With two interruptions, the end result is 10 hours of rest (4 + 2 + 4). |
