10-15-07, 01:43 AM I've been playing around with spellslinging melee types recently, and I was wondering if caster can cast a spell with somatic components with a sword and shield in hand. I've been looking through the PHB, but I can't find the rules. Anyone have any ideas?

You need either a free hand, or the Somatic Weaponry feat to do that.

10-15-07, 02:52 AM It depends on what kind of shield really. You're fine if you use a light shield or a buckler, but heavy shields or tower shields block your hand.

Somatic Weaponry works around that though, if you really like your shields.

Buckler
This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while carrying it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a -1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so.

Shield, Light, Wooden or Steel
... A light shield’s weight lets you carry other items in that hand, although you cannot use weapons with it.

Shield, Heavy, Wooden or Steel
... A heavy shield is so heavy that you can’t use your shield hand for anything else.

Shield, Tower
... You cannot bash with a tower shield, nor can you use your shield hand for anything else.
