I am happy with my purchase of the Rules Compendium.

However, the whole reason I wanted to buy it was to have a nice, easy to find table with a variety of spotting distances. And encounter distances are not in the Rules Compendium.

So I ask, where are tables for encounter distances to be found? I know they are probably on some page of the DMG that I go flipping by all the time.

Also, if this is something more conveniently printed from the SRD, I am happy to do that as well.

Thanks!

Afaik, encounter distance is whenever on party notices the other, so relies on opposed spot/hide and listen/ms checks. Then modified for the max distance possible in whatever terrain you are.

If you look in the DMG under wilderness terrain, stealth and detection pgs 86-95, it tells you the average spot distance.

If it's an indoor encounter use the radius of the given light source, modifying for darkvision and the like.

hope this helps.

Otherwise, standard is -1 per 10' (2squares) to make a spot/listen check.
