A friend of mine used the Summon Undead III spell (Libris Mortis, 71) just yesterday. In the table on page 72, wich describes the types of undead you can summon, it read "huge skeleton" among a ghoul and a large zombie. So, with that vague description, he figured he could pull out a 17 HD, CR 7 Cloud Giant Skeleton.

I really, really hope my friend was wrong, because he slaughtered my encounter with something that's even worse then what the Summon Undead IV can produce. Do you know if he was, and where I can find the rules text that prove him wrong?

The only thing I can find is that, in the Spell Compendium, spell has been modified both by changing the monsters available, and adding a 'no creature summoned can have Hit Dice higher than your Caster Level +1'. But with the Libris Mortis version, I do believe it was completely legal.

Well, the most recent version trumps the older ones. Summon Undead has been revised in both the Spell Compendium and Heroes of Horror. Go with that,

There was an errata for Player's Guide to Faerun that limited the summoned undead of the older version to Caster Level +1. Why it was not applied to later printings before the changes is another WotC oops. If you do not have access to the newer versions of the spell you should use this errata.
