Can a Tarrasque turned into a Vampire...??? My players started to shake when I came up with the possibility... ;)

No. The vampire template cannot be used on magical beasts.

By RAW no. From SRD:
"Vampire" is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature).
But if you are the DM who is stopping you? The thought of Count Tarrasque having a grand ball in his mansion makes me smile inside. Maybe some Epic level freako wizard decided that the Tarrasque is too lame by itself and wanted to improve it.

no... it can't have lethal dmg or ability dmg done to it so it couldnt ever be a vampire... unless maybe some crazy diety willed it i guess.

There is the "vampiric dragon" template from Draconomicon, and I wouldn't be surpprised if there were a feat in either Races of the Dragon or Dragon Magic (don't have either one) that can give it the dragon type.

Just because its the Tarrasque doesn't mean you can't alter it.

Quoted for truth.

You can do whatever you want as DM.

As far as Vampiric Tarrasques go, there is really no reason to say that it cannot be done, since if you ever played the module "Heart of Nightfang Spire" There was a Vampire Gibbering Mouther in that module and there is no way a Gibbering Mouther should be a Vampire.

Well, I don't think it's quite so simple. The Tarrasque is listed as unique. You'd have to figure that, by altering it, you'd be differentiating it from other Tarrasques, but this is a logical impossibility on account of the creature being unique.

This said, it's not unfeasible to mechanically alter the Tarrasque. There's no such thing as a fiendish Tarrasque. Still, applying the fiendish template to the Tarrasque would simply result in the unique Tarrasque, albeit with different abilities. You wouldn't call it a fiendish Tarrasque, since this would imply there also exist non-fiendish varieties.

Personally, I think the Tarrasque is already quite fiendish and dire toboot.

Homebrew world. Alternate dimision. A(nother) god goes nuts. It actually evolves itself every 20,347,890,354 times it comes back. I mean really, how many times would the tarrasque already have been defeated by other high lv adventurers over the centuries of time?...the reasons a can go on and on..

Obviously, we're not limiting ourself to RAW. Wizards even did an article on using templates to get what you want and managed evil unicorns which are always good.

How would this do anything except make the Tarrasque more vulnerable to destruction?

06-04-07, 11:12 PM
The tarrasque isn't actually a unique entity. It's just that there's usually only one tarrasque on any given world at any given time.

There's a tarrasque on Oerth, a tarrasque on Abeir-Toril*, a tarrasque on Mystara, and so on. The planet Falx (detailed in a Spelljammer book) is home to several hundred tarrasques.

*The Forgotten Realms are known to contain more than one tarrasque at a time, and their supply somehow replenishes itself (the death of one tarrasque will lead to the appearance of another, somewhere else in Faerûn).

Never said there was more than one. Just that this time around, it's not your grandpappies ol' fashioned Tarrasque. And if there's ALWAYS only one, I think it's AO and that's how he keeps tabs on everyone.

Q: I was reading about the tarrasque and a question came up. What would happen if a tarrasque meets another tarrasque?
--Luis

A: To quote a wise man (we presume), in a battle no one can win… who wins? Essentially, this is what’s being asked. The 1st edition Monster Manual II listed the tarrasque’s Frequency as Unique, meaning there can be only one. Although Frequency is no longer part of the current monster stat blocks, the 3.5 edition tarrasque explicitly states, “The legendary Tarrasque -- fortunately, only one exists -- is possibly the most dreaded monster of all (except for the largest dragons).

So what would happen if a tarrasque meets a tarrasque coming through the rye? Fortunately we need not contemplate such a world…

Here it is from Ask wizards.

Ah. I hadn't realized that the Sage had retconned the Forgotten Realms out of existence. Someone should probably tell Wizards of the Coast, since they're still producing books for it...

How do you know that when you wish it away it just doesn't move the remains to another world. killing it in one world would just move it to another one and so on.

It should be noted that you can add the Zombie template to the T. That wouldn't be nearly as terrifying though.

What other people said is true though; you can really do what you want. If you want it to be by RAW -as said- just add the half dragon template first....then again, if you do that you could conceivably make him a Dracolich.

I don't see how this makes him more powerful most of the abilities he would get from these he has or doesn't really need to begin with.

06-05-07, 12:22 AM
Sorry, but the Sage has been incorrect several times before, I am reminded of one instance when they didn't even get the dwarf racial abilities right. A DM can have as many tarrasque in their world as they like, all I ask is that they remember to leave enough distance between the two so that there isn't a tremendous battle for hunting grounds.

How do you know that when you wish it away it just doesn't move the remains to another world. killing it in one world would just move it to another one and so on.

Some worlds (such as the aforementioned Falx) were known to have multiple tarrasques active at the same time.

The Monster Manual (and the Sage's reply based on it) seems to be working under the assumption that whatever world you're playing in is the only world in existence (and that said world has only one tarrasque). That's fine, since it's a core rulebook and isn't supposed to get into anything setting-specific. It just wouldn't work like that in Planescape, Spelljammer, or Ravenloft (all of which relied on the multiverse concept), or even Greyhawk, Dragonlance, or the Realms (at least as they were presented in the TSR days) - and as always, a DM should feel free to run it as he pleases in his own world.

Likewise, if a DM wants a vampiric tarrasque... why not? The template may not be applicable as written, but even WotC has ignored things like that before (see the adventure referenced in post #7, or the "Creatures That Cannot Be" series they ran on the website a while back).

It may not be possible to turn a tarrasque into a vampire in the conventional manner (by blood drain), but there are other possibilities. It could have been:

- Transformed by an epic spell cast by an ancient vampire wizard.
- Mutated after years of exposure to the negative energy plane.
- Cursed by Orcus, or some other entity with power over undeath.

I under stand changing the rules to make the game more fun but this templete doesn't even help him be more powerful and there are easier ways to make him/her less powerful. Some rules are there for a reason. where should we draw the line? Most of the things it would get it wouldn't know how to use.

I don't know...the monster manual says there is only 1. it doesn't say 1 in each plane/realm/world. It just says one. So I would have to say there is just one. If you were playing in a multiverse there would only be 1 and he would be on one of the many planes not all of the many planes.

As a DM you can have as many as you want but if you want to go by the book the Tarrasque(MM3.5) is in, then there is just one.

Tarrasque is just as unique as Klauth...not red dragons cause there are many red dragons, but only one Klauth. Since the creature is unique, its name is Tarrasque just as Klauth's name is Klauth. Tarrasque just happens to be the only one, so his name and "race" are the same.

I say give it Shade template.

A vampiric Tarrasque would be great, especially if the players met it in bat form first, hanging in an old barn.

They get tremendous evil readings from a simple bat, and demand that the vampire show them it's true form.

Hilarity ensues.

Just because the Tarrasque is unique doesn't mean you can't slap a template on it. It just means that this is the way your world's tarrasque has always been. It's always been a vampiric monstrosity, or a fiendish abomination, or a gelatinous terror, or whatever.

For even more template Tarrasque fun :EEK!! (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20051109a) WotC did an article where they had fun slapping templates on the bad boy and made him even badder :schemes:

As for the why? Why not... Sometimes the idea is just fun to do, regardless of power. If the idea of a vampire tarrasque sounds like it would be insanely fun, then do it, regardless of weither or not the tarrasque would get more 'power' or not :)

Can a Tarrasque turned into a Vampire...??? My players started to shake when I came up with the possibility... ;)

To me this means is it allowed in the rules. Which it is not. Now if you take this to mean can I as DM make this monster a vampire. Than yes as DM he can make any monster anything he wants. But to me then he/she would have " should I turn a Tarrasque" which is not the case. but that is just me.

Why not make a template for a half tarrasque? You could make the template only work on egg laying races and work like the dark talon lizardmen are made only replace the dragon's blood with BigT's blood. Make the Regen move up by levels. Give it 25% chance of reflecting spells like the BigT can and rush to work triple move once per min. Then add vampire to that for one hell of a bad guy or PC.

I don't know...the monster manual says there is only 1. it doesn't say 1 in each plane/realm/world. It just says one.

It's assuming that whatever world you're playing in is the only world you need to be concerned with.

If you were playing in a multiverse there would only be 1 and he would be on one of the many planes not all of the many planes.

No, it's one per campaign setting/world (and sometimes more than one).

From WotC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eo/20051109a):

But, you may wonder, if the tarrasque is unique, how can any variants exist? Well, it's true that only one tarrasque exists -- one in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, one in the Eberron Campaign Setting, one in the World of Greyhawk, and one in your campaign world.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarasque):
Only one tarrasque exists in each gameworld in the Greyhawk campaign setting, although not all settings make it unique: Faerûn, for instance, has multiple tarrasques.

From Ed Greenwood (Creator of the Forgotten Realms):
I'm SURE there's more than one of these beasts in the Realms. Many of the rumors you allude to are linked to the activities or deaths of various tarrasques. I'm being deliberately vague here because I don't want to mess up any plans Dungeon Masters might be unfolding in their own Realms campaigns that view the tarrasque differently, but yes, I'd say you can deploy one whenever you want to (and as soon as it's slain, establish another one somewhere else in Faerun).

From Practical Planetology (Spelljammer Module):
While the true tarrasque is reputed to be unique, there are several hundred of these enormus monsters spread over the surface of Falx. (Some sages claim that this world is the home of the tarrasque, and that the unique creature is actually a single specimen transported through space for some reason. Other sages point out that there might be subtle differences between the Falx tarrasques and the terrestrial version. Space is large, after all, and the similarity might be just coincidence.)

Now, the question at hand is:

What's worse:

1) Having multiple tarrasques running around?
2) Having a unique 30-headed tarrasque running around (thankyouEliteOpponents)?
3) The idea of a gelatinous tarrasque?

I vote for #3.

The quote he posted still says that there is only one active at a time and to me that is the same thing.
