| SpiderEater03-09-07, 05:25 PM | I was DMing the other day and the following questions came up for which I couldn't find a decisive answer. Any help would be appreciated: 1) how do you sunder a magic bow? I saw a table entry for a crossbow, but not for a longbow or shortbow. 2) do natural weapons count as melee weapons for the purposes of the assassin's death attack ability? 3) suppose a caster casts deeper darkness in a room, then moves away from the square where he cast the spell (assume he cast the spell on some fixture in the room). After the room darkens (and thus I'm assuming that the caster can't be seen in his new location and the archer doesn't know where he went), an arcane archer wants to shoot a phase arrow at the caster. Can he do this? BTW: I couldn't find a search function on this board so I haven't searched to see if any of these questions have been posted already. If they have, sorry for the repetition ;) |
| Merloth03-09-07, 09:24 PM | I don't have the books with me so I can't check the rules for 1 or 3, but the answer to number 2 is yes. Natural weapons are melee weapons and they do work with the assassins death attack ability. What is phase arrows? |

Natural weapons are melee weapons and they do work with the assassins death attack ability. What is phase arrows? The Arcane Archer prestige class (DMG pp. 176-77) gets to shoot 1 phase arrow per day at level 6. It basically goes through non-magical barriers and even armor. The target must be "known to" the AA. So what I can't figure out is, if the target was seen previously but then disappears into the darkness, is it "known to" the AA for purposes of the phase arrow? |
| Frugal03-09-07, 10:58 PM | For the phase arrow, it sounds like the arrow is basically becoming incorporeal on the way to the target so it goes through any barriers in the way. While it says it negates concealment, I would be inclined to rule that the concealment from darkness isn't from a barrier but is from lack of visibility so it's not negated. As for if the target is "known", read the description for darkness, it's not nearly as dark as you'd think it is. |
| calronmoonflower03-10-07, 04:01 AM | 1) how do you sunder a magic bow? I saw a table entry for a crossbow, but not for a longbow or shortbow. Yes. I don't know what the hardness or HP's would be, but it sould be a inch thick piece of wood. |
| Evil DM Mk303-10-07, 05:01 AM | Those who would wish to cross the bridge of death must answer my these questions three, ere the otehr side ye see (:D well ok you didn't say that but hey): 1) how do you sunder a magic bow? I saw a table entry for a crossbow, but not for a longbow or shortbow. 2) do natural weapons count as melee weapons for the purposes of the assassin's death attack ability? 3) suppose a caster casts deeper darkness in a room, then moves away from the square where he cast the spell (assume he cast the spell on some fixture in the room). After the room darkens (and thus I'm assuming that the caster can't be seen in his new location and the archer doesn't know where he went), an arcane archer wants to shoot a phase arrow at the caster. Can he do this? 1)Crossbow is listed as an exaple projectile weapon. 2)Yes, they are natural melee weapons. 3)First deeper darkenss does not him from being seen, only granting soncealment due to shaodwly illumination, second, if we was not visible then the archer could guess at a square and take a 50% miss chance, thrid, I belive phase arrows deal with physical barriers. |
| CharlieRock03-10-07, 02:21 PM | I coulda swore somewhere that I read a longbow had hardness 5 and hp5 :thinks: |
