| versalife02-19-08, 05:49 PM | Hi! Can anyone help me? As I understand from player’s handbook: when I cast a touch spell I can use it the same turn as a part of my standard action. Then I can hold the charge… Does it mean that I can use it again and again every next round without actually casting anything? I think this is correct… right? But the question is: Next round after I casted a touch spell can I use it as a full attack (same as with weapons). So for example my wizard gets an additional attack on the 12th level and can hit twice with weapons (full attack)… can he do the same using touch attack with a spell? Thanks for help! |

You can only hold the charge if you haven't actually used the charge. Thus, if you cast a touch spell but miss, you can hold the charge and use it later. If you hit and use the spell, it's now gone. Certain spells like Chill Touch are exceptions to this. But the question is: Next round after I casted a touch spell can I use it as a full attack (same as with weapons). So for example my wizard gets an additional attack on the 12th level and can hit twice with weapons (full attack)… can he do the same using touch attack with a spell? No, unless the spell says he can. JaronK |

Then I can hold the charge… Does it mean that I can use it again and again every next round without actually casting anything? I think this is correct… right?By default, touch spells are one-use effects; if you succeed in the touch attack the spell effect discharges. If you miss or do not attack, then you hold the charge until you successfully attack or discharge the spell. Some spells grant the ability to make multiple touch attacks; those spells explicitly say you can make multiple touch attacks with the effect. Chill Touch (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/chillTouch.htm) is probably the most common example. But the question is: Next round after I casted a touch spell can I use it as a full attack (same as with weapons). So for example my wizard gets an additional attack on the 12th level and can hit twice with weapons (full attack)… can he do the same using touch attack with a spell? Thanks for help!Assuming that you have a high enough BAB to get multiple iterative attacks, there are two cases when you can make multiple touch attacks in a round. You cast a spell such as Chill Touch which allows you to make more than one touch attack. You missed with the first attack and still have the charge on your hand. Both cases require that you tale a full attack action in combat. (If you change your mind after the first attack you are allowed to convert the full attack action into an attack action and a move action, if you want.) |
| versalife02-21-08, 03:45 PM | JaronK and Merestil Haye! Thank you for explaining this one to me! Now i understand but I still have some more questions: If I miss my ranged touch attack... does this mean that my spell is discharged or I can attack again? Can I take full attack action using unarmed attack while holding the charge? And if I successfully hit with my touch attack and discharge the spell while performing full attack action can I continue my full attack by hitting again with unarmed strike? Thanks. |
| weasel002-21-08, 04:06 PM | 1) See post below. 2) You can use any unarmed attack actions until you successfully land the blow and the spell discharges. At that point, you no longer threaten and are actually unarmed. 3)Yes, but again, you no longer threaten and will provoke AoO for being truly unarmed. |
| Marcus Majarra02-21-08, 06:12 PM | If I miss my ranged touch attack... does this mean that my spell is discharged or I can attack again? If your spell requires you to make a ranged touch attack, it is NOT a touch spell. Touch spells have a range of touch and require melee touch attacks to be delivered. |
| Droma02-21-08, 09:02 PM | 1) Generally no. The spell would say if it is wasted like declare use abilities. By default, if you miss the attack, you retain the charge. 2) You can use any unarmed attack actions until you successfully land the blow and the spell discharges. At that point, you no longer threaten and are actually unarmed. 3)Yes, but again, you no longer threaten and will provoke AoO for being truly unarmed. Wrong on #1 if you miss a ranged touch attack the spell is discharged. |
| weasel002-21-08, 11:36 PM | Wrong on #1 if you miss a ranged touch attack the spell is discharged. whoops, failed to read the middle part of the question. "If I miss my ranged touch attack... does this mean that ..... I can attack again?" is all I read. :embarrass I also failed to notice it was "ranged." |
| versalife02-25-08, 08:49 AM | weasel0, Marcus Majarra and Droma! Thank you! |
| pmurray@bigpond.com03-01-08, 10:47 AM | No, unless the spell says he can. For instance, Produce Flame lasts until the duration expires and adds fire damage to all natural attacks until it expires. But that's not a "holding the charge" situation. |
| Marcus Majarra03-01-08, 04:16 PM | For instance, Produce Flame lasts until the duration expires and adds fire damage to all natural attacks until it expires. Incorrect. Produce flame merely arms you with a spell, which you can use to attack both in melee and at a range. It does not add fire damage to any natural weapons. |
| DerelictDroid03-05-08, 11:15 PM | Incorrect. Produce flame merely arms you with a spell, which you can use to attack both in melee and at a range. It does not add fire damage to any natural weapons. On the question of Produce Flame, its casting time is one standard action. Can I then make my ranged touch attack the same round as I cast it (such as with the melee touch attack), or must I wait until next round? |
