Can a flying character (warlock specifically) use the Tumble skill while flying around (when maneuvering around a flying monster, for example)?

I don't see why not.

Basically tumble is body control such that you can bend and move in just such a way.

That was my ruling (and will probably stay that way unless there's an official rule somewhere), however I could see it going the other way as well. A skill such as Jump, for example, pretty much assumes that the character has a solid surface underfoot.

I allow tumbling when flying. I just consider it aerial acrobatics to evade a foe. Heck, the whole combat use of tumbling I typically describe less as rolling, cartwheeling, etc, and more as deliberate movement of the body in ways that stay clear of the biggest danger zones. It just seems odd to me that doing a somersault would make you harder to slice with a sword.

I could see reasoning to remove a synergy bonus to tumble granted by jump while flying.

Not sure if you want to make your game that complicated though.

The skill entry just says "as part of a move action". I don't think the type of move action matters. Although I do limit it to a type of speed they have. EX: normal people don't have swim speed so I wouldn't allow them to tumble under water but I would for say a shark.

You might even limit it for what type of mobility they have.

You could imagine that tumbling while flying looks allot like a high diver twisting and turning in the air.

While I currently allow tumbling while flying, PenderGrass' comment about no jump synergy bonus got me thinking about whether I should apply a aerial maneuverability bonus (or penalty) to the roll.

How about +2/-2 for every category above/below average maneuverability. Too much, too little, not worth the trouble, comments?

I think leaving out the Jump synergy bonus is good enough, since there's no fly skill to substitute with, unlike for other movement types such as climb and swim.

I don't think I've ever had a player with a PC that had Tumble and 5 ranks in Jump anyway.

How bizarre, I doubt any of the players I have have ever not taken the jump synergy bonus to tumble.

Tumble, if you have it, always should be bolstered any way you can - so their motto goes (and since I am the DM, I agree that all the NPCs will likely have the same mind towards their build).

****I'm sure you're right PenderGrass, if I checked the characters I'd see it. They just don't use the Jump skill quite as often.
