A druid in one of my campaigns picked up ranks in the tumble skill and brought this question up in one of the sessions. The rules are ambiguous in reference to said situation. Is it really possible to tumble while swimming or flying?

To not slow the game down, I ruled it could happen with a minor penalty, but I'd like to hear other thoughts and comments about it.

If he has a swim or fly speed he can tumble normally. If he doesn't, he can't.

what bobo said, plus:

I find it helps to not think of it as "tumbling" per se when talking about flyers or swimmers. I think of flying tumbles as barrel rolls and swimming as corkscrews or twists.

Yup, I'd allow it.

You're swimming or flying evasively, essentially. You have to have a Fly or Swim speed to do it though.

Interestingly enough... what would you do about a Burrowing creature?

What if your druid cast "Burrow" (grants 10ft burrowing speed).

Can you tumble while burrowing?

:)

Well burrowing almost seems like swimming/flying albeit at a slower speed, so it would probably be the same thing. Besides, how often can a creature actually reach into the ground to hit you while you are burrowing? :)

I agree with Light_Colonel and take it a step farther. I don't consider ground based tumbling to be "tumbling" in the cartwheels, somersaults, etc. style, but rather moving cautiously and contientiously with an eye toward twisting away from any danger that present themselves.

Um, why wouldn't you just take a five foot "burrow"?

Ooooh!! It's rough terrain and can never take a 5' step.... no that shouldn't apply... oh well.
