Hi. What happens if a non-proficient PC, say a wizard, wants to use a longsword +3 defending?

a.) He/she gets (effectively) -1 to hit, and no bonus to AC

or

b.) He/she gets (effectively) -1 to hit, but +3 bonus to AC

or

c.) What?

The only official penalty for wielding a non-proficient weapon is a -4 to hit, but all other effects carry out normally.
So assuming you transfer all of the enhancement bonus, +3 AC, -4 to hit, as using the defending property subtracts from the to hit bonus of the sword.

Myers is mostly right. If the wiz wanted -1 to hit, she couldn't take any boost to her AC. With +1 AC, she'd be at -2 to hit, and +2 AC=-3 to hit. If she transfers all of the enhancement bonus something odd happens, though. Since it is still a masterwork sword she will still be at -3 to hit (though she deals a point less damage than she would if the sword were still +1).
