Hello !

The PHB goes pretty well in details about the vision rules when the party is in dark dungeons, but nothing is said about vision outside during the night.

So, what would you do ? I would consider that everything is low-light (allowing camouflage and miss chance) because there is still the moon and the stars to light a little bit. But I was wondering the range ? 18 meters and after it is completely dark ?

Thanks for advices

I can't recall were but I have seen that characters with low-light vision would basically night light outdoors as daylight. That would assume some amount of moonlight.

I don't really like how 3.5 treats vision. Back in 2e there was a chart that said how far you could see what and under what lighting conditions. I believe even 3.0 had a table for seeing things based on lighting conditions so you could check that or a 3.0 SRD if you can find it.

One thing to remember is that light sources still work as well as they do underground and still produce their shadows beyond the basic light. Generally, you should probably treat everything in outdoors at night as under shadowy illuminiation unless total darkness would make more sense.

their are rules for vision in the player hand book that cover moonlight and starless nights.... or maby thats for tracking, but i think there is a section. Anyway, it would make sence for it to be shadowy light if the moon is out and full, but darkness if it is overcast or new.

Even as little light as a new moon but clear sky for starlight is considered low light everywhere. It's mentioned specifically in referance to Elves, that they can see in starlight as well as a Human during the day. For a bright full moon, maybe give them illumination like a torch.

I'd recomend trying it sometime. Wait for a full moon and a clear night, go for a walk around midnight.

Do that this Tuesday night (US) during the lunar eclipse for a relatively quick demonstration on how the illumination variations of moonlight effect the visual contrasts percieved by human eye at night.

Woah, smart-sounding.
I'm going to be an annoyance and say that you should have out "...moonlight affect the..."
I think that I heard rules for moonlight somewhere that have already been stated in this thread. Take your pick of which to choose.
