Warlock VSM? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-30-08, 01:11 PM As far as I can tell a warlocks invocations are spell like abilities. According to my players handbook a spell like ability has no components (V,S,M), but they still provoke aoo's and such. In the main FAQ it has a question that states that a warlocks invocations use "relatively simple" somatic components. I assume since the "relatively simple" is in quotes it comes from some where however I can't seem to find this in any of he likely places. Does anyone know where this quote comes from? A source and page number would be appreciated.

03-30-08, 01:14 PM I'm assuming that is noted only due to the balancing issues of having warlocks running around in full plate, and needing an excuse to keep them from it. Else, there would be no reason not to have them do so. It keeps them on par with Warmages and Bards for the armor. Simple gestures, but demanding enough to prohibit heavy and medium armor without special training.

03-30-08, 01:16 PM Look at the bard class weapon and armor proficiency entry. Warlocks are similar -- while their spell-like abilities do have somatic components, they ignore light armor ASF chance.

03-30-08, 08:28 PM It's from the complete {arcane}where the Warlock class is from. I don't own the book myself so I don't have it in front of me ATM, but it is under the section for Weapons and Armor.

Aside from the book being Complete Arcane, you are correct.

It says, "However, like arcane spellcasters, a warlock wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure (all invocations, including eldritch blast, have a somatic component)."

It also mentions under Invocations, "Finally, unlike other spell-like abilities, invocations are subject to arcane spell failure chance as described above."
