| rikimaru7502-26-07, 06:41 PM | I had a question regarding weapon sizing. When does a weapon actually increase in range. Large Greatsword: 5ft. Huge Greatsword: ? Gargantuan Greatsword: ? Colossal Greatsword: ? What about for reach weapons? Large Spiked Chain: 5ft. Huge Spiked Chain: ? Gargantuan Spiked Chain: ? Colossal Spiked Chain: ? |

A greatsword of ANY size, be it fine or collosal, will have a 5 ft reach for a medium and small character. spiked chains are a bit more complicated... only an appropriately sized spiked chain allows its "reach weapon" ability to function, and thus only a medium-sized spiked chain is the only size weapon a medium character would get the full 10 ft (along with the 5 ft) reach. Keep in mind, this is entirely RAW, not necessarily how most people play. I think it's a bit wierd a Monkeygripped large-sized spiked chain has less reach then a medium-sized spiked chain wielded normally, so I would probably allow reach to function for weapons within one size category of "appropriate". How a medium character would be wielding a Huge-sized Greatsword (or larger), of course, provokes my curiosity... but I dare not ask how, lest I be unpleasantly surprised. |

Never, reach is based of off the weapon being used and the size of the creature... it has nothing to do with the size of the weapon. So a large giant using a large great sword has 10ft reach, if he uses a large Spkied chain he has 20ft reach if a medium person were to wield the same laarge greatsword he would have 5ft reach and with the large spiked chain he would have 10ft reach. |
| Some_call_me_Tim02-26-07, 06:54 PM | I had a question regarding weapon sizing. When does a weapon actually increase in range. It depends on the wielder not the weapon. A human with a colossal greatsword still only has a five-foot reach. While an ogre with a diminuative longspear has a fifteen-foot reach. If you don't agree, use the old rules, check the 3.0 FAQ, as I believe there was some rules for it in there. |

Human example: correct. Ogre example: Not quite. An ogre has a natural reach of 10 ft. If wielding an appropriately-sized reach weapon, that reach would be doubled, instead of just adding 5 ft as you seem to be doing. |
| rikimaru7502-26-07, 09:52 PM | Okay. Thank you for clarifying all of this. I am still a little shaky on the whole "reach weapons' thing though. Would a large spiked chain still have 10ft. reach? (just like a medium one) |

| rikimaru7502-26-07, 11:27 PM | Thanks again. I also reconfirmed it with the Game Rule Update FAQ. My guess is that although the weapon is 'bigger', the player of said size can only utilize so much of it, no? Regardless, it solves my issue. |
| unusualsuspect02-27-07, 04:54 PM | If the chain was wielded by a medium sized character, yes. A large-sized spiked chain wielded by a medium-size character would only be "appropriately sized" if that character possessed the Powerful Build trait, or some other trait that treats weapons one size larger as normally wieldable. I'm fairly sure Monkey Grip wouldn't cut it. Counter-intuitive? You betcha. Still, them's the rules. |
| Marcus Majarra02-28-07, 12:36 AM | Actually, Monkey Grip would cut it, since it works similarly to Powerful Build (except with a -2 attack penalty). |
| unusualsuspect02-28-07, 07:41 PM | Arguably not. I'm theoretically allowing Powerful Grip only because it doesn't penalize you - you're treated as the right size to wield the weapon. Monkey Grip allows you to wield an inappropriately sized weapon without increased difficulty, but you still get the -2 penalty for wielding an "inappropriately sized weapon", which indicates to me that though the weilding difficulty isn't increased, it is still considered an inappropriately sized weapon. Like I mentioned earlier, I would allow reach weapons within 1 size category difference, but the rules as written seem to indicate otherwise. |
| Marcus Majarra03-01-07, 08:18 PM | Personally, I would allow reach weapons that are at least of the wielder's size category. Weapons of smaller categories than the wielder just tend to come up short. |
