What happens if you miss a spell touch attack? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Let's say a player casts "Shocking Grasp", then moves 20ft. (for example) to close the distance between himself and the Wolf (for example). Can he then attempt the melee touch attack to deliver the spell? If so, what happens to the spell if he fails this touch attack? Is it possible to "store" a spell touch attack (assuming no other spells are cast) for multiple rounds?

It seems I finally found an answer to my own question: to quote the SRD

"Touch Spells and Holding the Charge

In most cases, if you don’t discharge a touch spell on the round you cast it, you can hold the charge (postpone the discharge of the spell) indefinitely. You can make touch attacks round after round. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates. "

This seems to imply that if the first Touch Attack fails, the player can attempt a touch attack again. Either later that round (in the case of a high BAB) or in a later round (assuming no spells are cast until then)?

Can he then attempt the melee touch attack to deliver the spell?Yes he can, because the rules on touch range spells explicitly say he can. If they did not, then spells like Shocking Grasp (which take a standard action to cast) could not be cast and delivered in the same round, as that would require two standard actions.

If so, what happens to the spell if he fails this touch attack? Is it possible to "store" a spell touch attack (assuming no other spells are cast) for multiple rounds? If the touch attack misses, the spell effect is held on the caster's hand ("holding the charge") until the caster makes a successful attack roll, discharges the spell or casts another spell.

In the round the spell is cast, the caster can not make additional attacks from high BAB. This is because making multiple attacks requires a full attack action, and the caster did not take that action - he took a Cast a Spell action.

On subsequent rounds, the caster could opt for a full attack action and make multiple touch attacks if his BAB was high enough.

Unless of course, he had the spell quickened.

But as a result of high BAB, he could not.

In most cases a touch spell doesn't discharge till it touches it's something. If you fail the touch during casting you can hold the charge and try again in a later round. You just can not touch anything else whileholding the charge with the hand you are holding it on. and before someone comes on here to argue with me.Touch Spells and Holding the Charge: In most cases, if you don’t discharge a touch spell on the round you cast it, you can hold the charge (postpone the discharge of the spell) indefinitely. You can make touch attacks round after round. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates.
Some touch spells allow you to touch multiple targets as part of the spell. You can’t hold the charge of such a spell; you must touch all targets of the spell in the same round that you finish casting the spell.

and
Holding the Charge: If you don’t discharge the spell in the round when you cast the spell, you can hold the discharge of the spell (hold the charge) indefinitely. You can continue to make touch attacks round after round. You can touch one friend as a standard action or up to six friends as a full-round action. If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates. Alternatively, you may make a normal unarmed attack (or an attack with a natural weapon) while holding a charge. In this case, you aren’t considered armed and you provoke attacks of opportunity as normal for the attack. (If your unarmed attack or natural weapon attack doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, neither does this attack.) If the attack hits, you deal normal damage for your unarmed attack or natural weapon and the spell discharges. If the attack misses, you are still holding the charge.

Hope that helps.
