| PelorVsVecna06-20-07, 06:10 PM | I starting my first time Dming and I have a question. My group is going to go in this dungeon and there is a Drow King. But I heard that drow are really powerfull. But then I was thinking of Mind-flair's. I didn't explain all the details because thats not what is bugging me. What is bugging me is that I should use Drow Or Mind-Flair's plz tell me which would be better to use in my campain. |
| Peregrine_Wolf06-20-07, 06:35 PM | Sicne your new to DMing, go with Drow. They're basically elves with some extra fancy stuff. Also, Mind-Flayers are confusing as l-l 3 L L.....psionics, brainwashing, other stuff..... Definitely Drow. |
| Kouk06-20-07, 08:20 PM | If you are concerned about their power levels, then a Mind Flayer is much much stronger than a typical drow. Standard Drow are just 1 CR higher than their class levels, while the default (lowest normal level) Mind Flayer is already CR 8. Mind Flayers also have a lot of strong abilities by default, whereas you can customize a drow much more easily. By the way, I can't seem to find the entry for Mind Flayer or Illithid on the SRD. Was that one intentionally omitted? And if it is not on the SRD, then forget that I just told you the base CR :P |
| Salla06-20-07, 09:25 PM | The benefit of Drow is that they're readily scaling. You throw 1st level Drow at 'em early, then they can face 20th level drow months down the line. And yes, the Mind Flayer isn't in the SRD as WotC didn't want anybody else to use them. :) |
| Kobold Paladin06-20-07, 09:38 PM | Drow society is controled by women, it would be a drow queen. |
| Salla06-20-07, 09:41 PM | Drow society is controled by women, it would be a drow queen. ... uh, okay. What brought that on? :) |
| Kouk06-20-07, 10:14 PM | Drow society is controled by women, it would be a drow queen. Good point actually. Then again, maybe it is a lowish-level campaign, so they are fighting a self-styled drow "king". |
| weasel006-21-07, 12:03 AM | And the nobles are ruled over(if I'm not mistake-and i have been three times so far this week.. blah) by the High Preistess. Not a monarchy... but I do like that self-styled drow "king". |
| vineyard06-21-07, 12:12 AM | Drow society is controled by women, it would be a drow queen. This is not a cut in stone rule by any measure. The majority of drow societies are matriarchal true. But there have been references to societies lead by males. It is just the ones where Lloth is the patron deity that are fully female governed. |
| danyc06-23-07, 09:35 PM | I think the eberron drow might have done away with the matriarchal bit? Esp since they don't worship Lloth. Anyway, the society that they're normally described with is more or less taken from the Forgotten Realms setting, there's absolutely no reason generic drow in another seting couldn't follow a different social structure. Or maybe the Faerun drow are in the middle of an equal-rights movement. |
