When do immediate actions resolve? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Up till now my games have only featured very few immediate actions but with all the new books coming out the use of these actions becomes more and more common and I'm beginning to get confused as to when you declare an immediate action and when it resolves.

Example: A wizard has the ability to teleport 10 feet as an immediate action. A monster charges the wizard and the wizard says I'll get out of the way as an immediate action. What happens first? Does the charge proceed and can the wizard leave after he gets clobbered? Or is the wizard safe before the monster reaches him?

Immediate actions are resolved, well, immediately.
So in your example the wizard would teleport, and the monster wouldn't be able to attack him. And the monster would have to just stand there. This has to be done before the attack roll is made. So this does actually slow combat down a bit. As the DM has to clearly declare the action of the creature and give a second for the player to respond. But remember he only gets 1 immediate action per round. And if he uses an immediate action on his turn it counts as both a Swift and Immediate action.
