| Kaldric05-25-07, 04:00 AM | I was putting my two cents in on a falling damage thread, and then over at a maximum speed thread on the Character Optimization board. And it occurs to me. There are rules for the effects of windspeed. When the wind is above 31 mph, a medium-sized character has to start making saves to avoid being checked, or stopped in place. And yet... a monk with a 90' movement rate and the run feat can run at 51 mph. If the monk held out a device to measure wind speed while doing that, he would realize that the wind speed is probably around 51 mph. Wind speed is a measurement of how fast the air is moving around whatever object is doing the measuring. Is he forced to make a fort save? |

You're gonna make Kwai Chang Caine make a fort save for running fast? Dude, he is a monk with powers to control his breathing, body, soul and mind. He don't need no stinking fort save for running fast.... Now when the gods conspire to toss high-speed winds at him....? That is another story. :dragon: **** |
| Kaldric05-25-07, 06:15 AM | Just curious. I mean, what if I'm on a big sled going down a smooth, snowy hill at 60 miles an hour. Can I fire arrows without penalty? Because ranged attacks are penalized for wind speed. |

Thinking. :P Unless there is a rule somewhere that says you can't do certain things when you are moving fast, then there is no rule saying you can't. If something doesn't come up a lot, there is not much point making a rule about it. Enemies blowing wind at you with a spell: happens sometimes. Going downhill on a sled at 60 mph while trying to shoot an arrow: not so much. If you throw an axe on that same sled, and it smashes right into the face of the party member behind you, that could be a point of contention. Just let it go straight :D |
| Kaldric05-25-07, 07:22 AM | If a monk is running full tilt away from the casting point of a Gust of Wind spell at 50 miles an hour, does the 50 mph gust of wind do anything except leave him in a brief moment of calm? Because that's what the rules say. I realize I'm over-analyzing this, but it's 4:30 in the morning and I've got insomnia. |
| primemover00305-26-07, 08:03 AM | You will have some penalties to firing a bow while on a moving object (treat like a mount), but it has nothing to do with Wind Speed... You can use ranged weapons while your mount is taking a double move, but at a -4 penalty on the attack roll. You can use ranged weapons while your mount is running (quadruple speed), at a -8 penalty. In either case, you make the attack roll when your mount has completed half its movement. You can make a full attack with a ranged weapon while your mount is moving. Likewise, you can take move actions normally. |

Because ranged attacks are penalized for wind speed. I wouldn't bother in D&D, but if you really felt like accounting for this with some sort of penalty, d20 Modern has rules for what modifiers to apply on attack rolls and skill checks when fighting from a moving vehicle. It's in the SRD (http://www.darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/srd/srd_modern_html/msrdvehiclemovementandcombat.html). |
