Be it a barrel, table, mug of ale. Anything not intentionally ment to be thrown. Now wile it dosn't say this in the rules one could say that as long as the object to be thrown is under the light load of character/NPC. That way a str. 3 character/NPC can't pick up a Lrg. TH. sword of a Ogre and throw it the same as a 18 str. character/NPC. Or maybe strong character can throw a full keg of ale were as a weak one would have to empty it first. Now with that being said. could one say that if its in the Med. load capacity could you maybe lower the range increment to 5? Heavy loads could only be dropped into a adjescent square. Also what about objects that are especially arodynamic. like a nicely weighted rock. or ball what kind of range increment if any would you increase it by...double it to 20? If your just throwing for distance. Not trying to hit anything. would you increase it more?[I had a PC want to throw a object as far away as possible. it wa a small rock sized cube. 50 feet seems somewhat to small] If you wanted to throw a character/NPC I would think they would have to be helpless/stun/incapacitated in some way., Now if a Character/NPC was strong enough to lift another character/NPC using the guild lines I mention above [under a light load 10 range increment -4 to hit....under a med. load 5 range increment -4 to hit...under a heavy load adjecent square.] Could he initiate a grapple pin opponent then throw him. So if a fairly strong character/npc picked up a another he could throw him a max of 25 ft...fairly hefty throw but not impossible in fiction type game. Same situation with a small light weight character/npc could be thrown 50 ft..this seems kinda far...wich makes me think to just stick with just throwing light loaded object/living things what do you think. Ultimately I am making a NPC giant who is going to specialize in grappling and picking up people/things and throwing them around. with a light load in the 1000's of pounds he be able to throw a lot of interesting things..cattle, carts, heavily armored knights. and I wanted a consistent fair system. What do think of these rules. or if you can direct me to some that are already published. Thanks for your many insightful replies. |

Yes, this applies to anything not ment to be thrown as a weapon. In Complete Warrior, it details how the max a character can throw is their light load. (IIRC) That means characters with high strength can in fact throw the full keg, while low strength have to empty it first. Now with that being said. could one say that if its in the Med. load capacity could you maybe lower the range increment to 5? There is a prestige class in complete warrior (Hulking Hurler) which gives this as a special ability. But at full range. Also what about objects that are especially arodynamic. like a nicely weighted rock. or ball what kind of range increment if any would you increase it by...double it to 20? There is nothing in the rules about it, but there is no reason why not, aside from the DM. If you wanted to throw a character/NPC I would think they would have to be helpless/stun/incapacitated in some way. I generally treat this as a description of a bullrush. Statistically I treat them the exact same, but in the verbal description of the action I say he throws you, instead of he pushes you. There is again no official way, but this is the one that works for me. Ultimately I am making a NPC giant who is going to specialize in grappling and picking up people/things and throwing them around. with a light load in the 1000's of pounds he be able to throw a lot of interesting things..cattle, carts, heavily armored knights. and I wanted a consistent fair system. I would strongly recomend giving him levels in hulking hurler. That combined with the end of complete warrior where item damage by weight is listed, would make this a very consistant and fair enemy. Consider a hulking hurler who took the feats improved bullrush, and maybe even the dungeon crasher fighter variant from dungeonscape. (specializes in bullrushing). Also keep in mind for things like a smooth rock. The range incriment for this improvised weapon is 10ft. To throw an additional range incriment the penalty is only -2. lets say you simply want to throw this rock as far away as you want. Take a -10 penalty to add 50ft to your range incriment. That is a total of -24, wow. Yolu throw it, at the ground in that area, AC 5. Add in your approperiate dex mods, Maybe +3? you need a 13+ rolled to hit that specific spot. Good thing that the worst that can happen is that you miss that spot, and hit a nearby one. Still a good distance away, and since you didnt care where it went anyway, does it really matter? I think but am not 100% positive max range incriments that can be taken are 5. so a total of -10. |

The former allows you to pick up a friendly creature (who must be somewhat smaller than you) and throw them at a nearby empty space. The second allows you to do the same with a nonfriendly creature, but you have to grapple them first. They don't need to be helpless - just grappled. |
