The following thread is for the 01/06/2006 Design & Development column, Monsters with Traction, Part 2 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20060106a). As Dave Noonan asks, "Tell us—and by extension your fellow players—which monsters don’t deserve their place in the “Hall of Terrific D&D monsters”.

Thanks!

What, pray tell, is the hall of terrific D&D monsters? You know, a list we can go by?

Ah well, I'm going to guess that the Grick is in that hall anyway, for the sake of having an argument.
I seriously don't think that the grick is all it's cracked up to be. Among it's 5 attacks, only one is likely to hit the enemy per full round, with the grick's bad attack bonus and the shiny armor and stuff of 3rd level PC's. Damage is completely pathetic, not to mention. Not only that, but the grick's extremely low hit points don't make up for it's DR. A sneak attack or a 3rd CL magic missile, even a single hit from a barbarian's greataxe, and it's all over.
Had a fight with a grick once. It got a surprise attack on the party's barbarian, who then cut it in half the very next attack. I never again plan to use that monster.
