1. Inside the hold of an airship or spelljammer, with gaping holes in the floor and machine parts swinging around that knock you five feet in a random direction if they hit someone.

2. The PC's are crossing a narrow stone bridge over a subterranean lake, when a black dragon swoops down from the darkness and knocks some of them off the bridge. The dragon dissapears into the water, and tries to drown the party members who fell in.

3. A monster that can walk through mirrors, who the party fights in a room filled with mirrors. There is also an open skylight, and several mirrors on the roof.

4. the Party was on a boat that landed on a hostile shore. They immediately had a fight on their hands. The fighter took his place at the ramp, and the wizard behind him. The rogue used a rope to swing onto shore and attack everyone from behind.

5. The party was in a town, and was forced to fight off a raid of nearly 10,000 soldiers. The town was under siege for nearly 3 weeks. They had to dodge catapault fire, as well as ration their food supplies.

6. A personal favorite involved being stuck between ice elementals and fire elementals both attacking us on the roof of a crumbling stone tower.

7. The pc's are chaced out of baator by pit fiend and it's servants while a storming raid of demons rush in, during blood war. The iron fort of baator would be a nice background to the battle.

8) My favorite epic fight scene took place inside a City-Mech (the one in my sig). The mech's chest cavity is huge and barrel shaped, with a mechanical metrapolis all along the inside wall. The epic monk and epic artificer duked it out in mid-air over a 65 story drop. The monk was actually using Spring Attack to leap across the 400 foot divide to the opposite wall in order to attack the artificer, who was flying with magical jet-packs. Hot damn it was sweet.

In my homebrew campaign elves are bound to a "Tree of Life". The tree was hundreds of feet tall with silvery bark and leaves like thin mithril. Each leaf represented an elf, and if the elf died so did the leaf.

The BBEG was trying to destroy the Tree, and amassed a big army to raid the elven city (Aberlon, hence my screen name) that was built around the tree.

The remaining elves were trying to hold off the invading army while the party tried to sneak behind the lines and take out the leader. As the battle built into a climax, leaves falling from the tree were raining down like feathers across the battle field.

That's beautiful.

Back in my more enthusiastic DnD days, I tried to create situations that evoked a sense of urgency with some cool scenery

10) As the party entered the large temple room, they saw the statue of the god they would free by placing his assembled staff in his hand. But before they can act, the room trembles and the center floor drops away into a swirling dark orange sky. A gigantic snake coils its head through the hole and into the room as chunks of rock continue to break away from the floor. A thin path of stone remains at the edges of the room...

(A serpentine god was to be released from its prison, but Apep had other ideas... if the PC's fall into the orange sky, they get sucked into the Abyss)

11) The party's spelljamming ship had been rammed with a natural 20 by a Nautiloid, the signature ship of the illithids. But these illithids were more highly developed and demonstrated arcane abilities. Things looked bad for our heroes until a large shadow crept over the locked craft. A huge manta ray-shaped ship passed by them and turned to face the battle. It was so large, it had a city on its back. Suddenly, a bright flash from the tip of its overstretched tail sent a giant sphere of annihilation hurtling towards the craft. At the last second, it veered towards the illithid ship and consumed half of its hull. Then the large manta ray turned its belly towards the ships and passed close by, causing a surge of gravity that drew many of the illithids plummeting towards its underside, dotting its surface as it passed...

(This campaign would involve discovering that one of the illithids managed to get aboard the Spelljammer, murdering its captain to take control of the ship, and using it to turn the tide in a war against the good illithids. The campaign would culminate in a huge fleet battle with the Spelljammer in the center as the PC's try to stop the new captain and wrestle control of the ship from him. Alas, Magic the Gathering became popular and I never finished it - or at least, I never added enough detail to make it entertaining and cohesive).

12. The settlement that the party is staying in (and spying on) is attacked by mercineries funded by the elven empire of Helss. Helsh officers oversee the battle from howdahs on the back of two drarkons (flightless, non-intellegent dragons about the size of elephants). During the chaos, one of the pcs overcomes his dragon-fear and manages to confuse one of the drarkons with magic. The rogues of the party take advantage of this to mug the elves on board and steal the drarkon. Pcs and their new mount are happily rampaging through enemy lines when the other drarkon (with full hp and breath weapon uses) turns up. Cue high speed chase through the warzone as pcs desperatly try to escape with their new pet intact. A normally overly serious player starts humming the Benny Hill chase music.

The party fought their way free of slavery on a Zhen contrlolled Halruuan Sky Ship, halfway through killing the helmsman. The fight against organized soldiers on the deck of a rapidky crashing skyship was what my group still refers to as the best opening to a campaign ever.
