| Return of the Flumph08-22-07, 02:04 AM | 1. There will not be an SRD. 2. The only way to access the boards will be via gleemax, and gleemax membership will cost $19.95 a month. 3. Fourth edition DnD will be strictly copywrited. No company, organization, or individual besides WOTC will have legal permission to produce DnD material. 4. There will be no roleplaying involved in the game. 5. The fourth edition core manuals will contain only minimal information; in order to access the class information, spells, and monster statistics (among certain other "optional" mechanics), you will need to be on gleemax as well as pay a fee of $39.95 per manual errata. 6. The game will lack instructions for pen and paper gaming. The default fourth edition game will take place online. |
| Waldo_di08-22-07, 02:21 AM | 7. Kobold will be in Players Handbook. 8. Kobold will replace halfling in players handbook 9. They won't fix half-elf or half-orc. 10. They'll some how find a way to make grappling even more confusing. 11. They'll include all special attacks (like tripping, disarming, bull rushing, etc.) in random places througout the book. 12. They include phyonics in players handbook. 13. They allow the word "figther" and "broken" to be in the same setence on the message boards. 14. Remove classes altogther for a crazy new system! |
| asdfff08-22-07, 03:58 AM | 15. That there is any true need for stats like Charisma, Fast-talking, or any skills related to human interaction. 16. That there is any further need for adventure hooks as excuses for breaking and entering. 17. That it is a viable method for drawing in WoW players and that we have to put up with them on DDI. 18. That we won't have two new, highly robust product lines to select and purchase from. 19. That campaign/setting books are used by anyone playing D&D for its unique insights into character development and interactions, and NOT solely by people nostalgic for older editions. 20 (just to round it out) That people won't confuse the current art direction for AD&D pre-revised-edition 2e artwork. |
| asdfff08-22-07, 04:04 AM | 21. That you may proclaim allegiance to continued 3.x gaming without triggering the boycotting violation in the forum Code of Conduct. Seriously, what are you doing here if not to purchase and consume? |
| Scipio08-22-07, 04:09 AM | 22. That all 3.X books will spontaneously combust the second that the first 4E handbook hits a store shelf, leaving nothing but a pile of ash, thus forcing you to buy 4th edition if you want to play. |
| asdfff08-22-07, 04:21 AM | 22. That all 3.X books will spontaneously combust the second that the first 4E handbook hits a store shelf, leaving nothing but a pile of ash, thus forcing you to buy 4th edition if you want to play. It's incredible that you listed this, because this is almost exactly what the poor customers over on the miniatures general board have been talking about since the announcement. |
| Optimator08-22-07, 04:22 AM | 23: Vancian Casting will be left in. 24: Vancing Casting will be taken out. |
| Prince_of_Murder_Kinghall08-22-07, 04:36 AM | That they change the are to anime style to draw more customers. |
| Bacon and Eggs08-22-07, 11:30 AM | 26? The Magic System will be "Card Based"... and all combat will be called "duels" hence forth 27? Summoning will require that the beastie summond be captured first in a capture "Sphere"... up to a maximum of 6 can be carried at any given time. 28? Any spell cast requires the caster to apply the verbal component of screaming out the power level of the Spell, usually at base-1000 29? All characters must have spiky hair... and a Theme Song! O__O |
| Escef08-22-07, 11:39 AM | Seriously, what are you doing here if not to purchase and consume? Seriously, that would make an excellent slogan to put on the back of a T-shirt for wear at a gaming con. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_08-22-07, 12:00 PM | 8. Kobold will replace halfling in players handbook Replace "halfling" with "gnome" and I would consider that one of the system's major selling points. |
| LCD2YOU08-22-07, 12:12 PM | I thought these were going to be irrational concerns.Replace "halfling" with "gnome" and I would consider that one of the system's major selling points. What he said. Oh, can there be any greater joy than that of no Gnomes. It's like paradise. |
| bonethug010808-22-07, 12:13 PM | 23: Vancian Casting will be left in. 24: Vancing Casting will be taken out. Either way there will be complaints. I won't say which one I'm for(coughtakeitoutcough) but there is tradition on one side and a much better system on the other.:P |
| xXOblivionXx08-22-07, 12:33 PM | 30. The two sided dice will be invented, and a rift in space and time will be the result. |
| LCD2YOU08-22-07, 12:43 PM | 30. The two sided dice will be invented, and a rift in space and time will be the result. There is already such a device. In the US, it comes in copper or zinc/silver. The copper colored 2 sided die has the profile of some old dude with a beard. The other side has the Parthenon or something like it. |
| asdfff08-22-07, 12:47 PM | 30. The two sided dice will be invented, and a rift in space and time will be the result. That's irrational because it already exists: coins. EDIT: Got beat to it. Here's a joke to make up for it. That rift in spacetime? The collective anger this last weekend. Man, that rift was so intense that several threads were locked in time and some even disappeared! After being cleansed of nonconforming thought! (No really, posts were specifically removed from threads. By the rift, of course) |
| xXOblivionXx08-22-07, 12:49 PM | Well, it is the 1,001 Irrational Concerns About Fourth Edition thread. Also coin's are not dices :P |
| Scipio08-22-07, 12:54 PM | It's incredible that you listed this, because this is almost exactly what the poor customers over on the miniatures general board have been talking about since the announcement. And it's completely irrational, which is why I listed it. 31. Pseudonatural, Vampiric, Paragon Flumphs, as a playable race no less. |
| LCD2YOU08-22-07, 01:37 PM | Well, it is the 1,001 Irrational Concerns About Fourth Edition thread. Also coin's are not dices :PIs too! Works the same way! :P |
| Astron the Wizard08-22-07, 01:56 PM | 1. There will not be an SRD. Wait, sorry to barge in on your thread here, but by labeling "there will not be an SRD" do you mean one for 4th edition, or 3.5? Because I'm afraid that they'll get rid of the 3.5 SRD that I use in favor of 4th edition rules. |
| Aliquid08-22-07, 02:09 PM | Well, it is the 1,001 Irrational Concerns About Fourth Edition thread. Also coin's are not dices :PFYI, dices is not a word.... dice is already plural. |
| TiwazTyrsfist08-22-07, 02:13 PM | 32. IT'S MELTING MY BRAINS! |
| ChosenofAzuth08-22-07, 02:52 PM | 33. All clerics must worship Cthulu! 34. OMG, it's Warcraft and Dragons 4th Edition! 35. To play in RPGA events, you must own an official D&D miniature that possesses the same class as your character. |
| Chrome_Golem08-22-07, 02:57 PM | 36) To outdo the 3rd edition the naming system will completely remove all instances of the word "man" and replace it with "folk". A Man-at-Arms will be a Folk-at-Arms, a Mancatcher will become a Folkcatcher, and the Manticore will become the Folkticore. 37) D&D miniatures will do the stats for 60 miniatures but they will not be from the earlier D&D line. Highlights include the Barry Bonds bobblehead, the Gene Simmons doll from the 1970's, the Thimble from Monopoly, and the ceramic cat that has been gathering eons of dust on your grandmothers mantlepiece. 38) In a further attempt to tap into the popularity of computer games and a younger audience many of the games terms will be more aligned with net speak. For example, a critical hit is now known as "total pwnage", and Tasha's Hideous Laughter is now called "Tasha's ROFLMAO". |
| DeathByRodent08-22-07, 03:02 PM | 39. Law enforcement will be doing house-to-house sweeps, confiscating all pre-4e material. 40. All 3.5e books will cease to open without paying the outrageous 4e online subscription fee, downloading and installing spyware onto your PC (which must be Windows of course) just to get your 3.5e books to open! 41. Company reps and ex-3.5e players will speak at public school assemblies, preaching how continued play with pre-4e material will rot your brain, make you unemployable, and stunt your growth. |
| CCS08-22-07, 03:23 PM | 22. That all 3.X books will spontaneously combust the second that the first 4E handbook hits a store shelf, leaving nothing but a pile of ash, thus forcing you to buy 4th edition if you want to play. That would be so sweet to watch happen! Btw, you're wrong about 4th then being the only way to play. There'd still be plenty of old 1st (& maybe 2nd) ed stuff out there! And from experience I know that my copies of 1st ed are nigh invulnerable to such death magic (with the exception of 1Es Unearthed Arcana - wich was apparently vulnerable to mere oxygen!). They've survived my childhood, hostile enviroments, conventions, fires, floods, the US Postal services, the US military, Iraquis..... So I'm pretty sure they'll hold their own against anything the Digital Inititives got planned. :) |
| BW022208-22-07, 04:05 PM | 42. The online tools are actually an online game designed to compete with D&D Online, NWN, and Warcraft. DMs will be baned from using the tools under fear with death, VOIP stops working once combat happens, and the system switches to a real-time first person shooter. |
| MarkB08-22-07, 04:48 PM | 43. 4th edition ate my goldfish. |
| TyWebb08-22-07, 04:57 PM | 43. The delayed-action contact poison they've been using as the main ingredient in the ink used for printing all 3.x books will finally start to take effect around May 2008 44. You will be required by law to buy at least one splatbook every two weeks until the release of 5e. At this point, you may flood the boards with complaints about how your $2000 investment is now invalidated. 45. Play-by-text messaging will become the default for all RPGA "Living" campaigns. 46. If your character dies, you die in real life. 47. Iconics such as Redgar, Jozan, and Mialee will be replaced by Bubba, Chad, and Edna. |
| bonethug010808-22-07, 05:06 PM | From WotC Logan: "It is Wizards of the Coast policy that we will make no statements affirming or denying any rumors that I am going to come to your house on, say, Wednesday and kick your dog." 48. If I don't buy 4e that Logan will kick my dog. :P |
| badgerish08-22-07, 05:59 PM | 49. all playable races will be replaced with elven sub-races 50a. you will be contractuly obligied to have the correct offical D&D miniture to represent each and every monster/NPC in use 50b. and they will STILL be sold in random packs 51. all clerics will have to follow real-life religions |
| Joseph_Silver08-22-07, 06:31 PM | 52. Clerics of Jebus will be the next CoDzilla. |
| Chaze08-22-07, 06:45 PM | 53. Orcs look different... from- http://i9.tinypic.com/4opilbp.jpg to- http://i12.tinypic.com/4pjbhup.gif 54. You can now buy D&D gold ONLINE! 55. You can reset dungeons in order to get the gear that didn't drop last "run". |
| MarkB08-22-07, 06:47 PM | 53. Orcs look different... from- http://i9.tinypic.com/4opilbp.jpg to- http://i12.tinypic.com/4pjbhup.gif So, a change of pose, hairstyle and armour, then? |
| xXOblivionXx08-22-07, 06:52 PM | FYI, dices is not a word.... dice is already plural. I don't even know what plural means. Any particular reason I should know that dices is not a word? 54. Orcs will be goblinoids due to their green skin. 55. The game will be renamed "Barbie & Ponies" |
| Chaze08-22-07, 06:53 PM | So, a change of pose, hairstyle and armour, then? No they are now DIGITAL:) Lol you would've had to play WoW to get that joke. |
| bonethug010808-22-07, 07:00 PM | I don't even know what plural means. Any particular reason I should know that dices is not a word? My sarcasmo meter is broken, so forgive me if this was sarcasm. The singular(meaning one) is die, the plural(meaning more than one) is dice. |
| Goreg Skullcrusher08-22-07, 07:06 PM | 56. That 4ed will just like 3.5, but with a minor few tweaks, meaning that all improvements/suggestions made still using the 3.5 framework are perfectly valid. |
| Aliquid08-22-07, 07:08 PM | I don't even know what plural means. Any particular reason I should know that dices is not a word?Plural = πληθυντικός One dog (ένα σκυλί) Ten dogs (δέκα σκυλιά) One die Ten dice You wouldn't say ten dices, because dices isn't a word. |
| Kalai_Eljahn08-22-07, 07:13 PM | 57. That my players will all convert and leave me in the dust. 58. That my DM will convert and refuse to let me know how anything works. 59. That I'll convert and no one else will care. |
| bonethug010808-22-07, 07:17 PM | Plural = πληθυντικός One dog (ένα σκυλί) Ten dogs (δέκα σκυλιά) One die Ten dice You wouldn't say ten dices, because dices isn't a word. It's all greek to me.:P And that is a semi-popular saying for, "I really don't understand what you're saying.";) |
| Aliquid08-22-07, 07:20 PM | It's all greek to me.:P:rimshot: |
| Optimator08-22-07, 07:23 PM | I lol'd. |
| bonethug010808-22-07, 07:25 PM | I lol'd. I'm happy someone liked my lame joke.:) |
| xXOblivionXx08-22-07, 07:28 PM | Plural = πληθυντικός One dog (ένα σκυλί) Ten dogs (δέκα σκυλιά) One die Ten dice You wouldn't say ten dices, because dices isn't a word. Also, Τρία σκυλιά Τέσσερα σκυλιά Πέντε σκυλιά Έξι σκυλιά, What's your point? It's all greek to me.:P And that is a semi-popular saying for, "I really don't understand what you're saying.";) That made me laugh out loud:) |
| Aliquid08-22-07, 07:34 PM | Also, Τρία σκυλιά Τέσσερα σκυλιά Πέντε σκυλιά Έξι σκυλιά, What's your point? The point is, if you know the difference between σκυλιά and σκυλί, then you know what "plural" means. I made the assumption that you were being serious when you said "I don't even know what plural means". So I figured that English must not be your native language. Considering your profile says you are from Greece... I decided a translation might help. |
| dknight10008-22-07, 07:36 PM | 60) That in order to require DM's to use the online Gaming Table, WotC will take your RL table |
| xXOblivionXx08-22-07, 07:40 PM | The point is, if you know the difference between σκυλιά and σκυλί, then you know what "plural" means. I made the assumption that you were being serious when you said "I don't even know what plural means". So I figured that English must not be your native language. Considering your profile says you are from Greece... I decided a translation might help. Yes, Greek is my native language, but I speak better English. How strange is that? |
| Aliquid08-22-07, 08:29 PM | Yes, Greek is my native language, but I speak better English. How strange is that?So you do understand why "dices" isn't a word.... and you were just giving me a hard time. |
| DrStalker08-22-07, 08:47 PM | 61) Deliberate grammatical ambiguities will be introduced to ensure lengthy arguments over RAI vs. RAW will still be part of 4th Edition 62) To save people time optimizing their characters Pun-Pun is now a base class. Each additional level moves your stats to a larger form of infinity. |
| MarkB08-22-07, 09:02 PM | 63.) All the time savings mentioned by the devs are genuine, but have been painstakingly counterbalanced by equal increases in complexity elsewhere. So building a high-level PC takes ten minutes and resolving a combat round requires six seconds of real time, but trapfinding is an intricate process involving seventeen distinct steps, and random encounters consist of up to seven nested percentile tables determining appropriate challenges by locale, terrain, level and personality. |
| dknight10008-22-07, 09:24 PM | 64) In order to simplify the grappling rules, but still maintain the general flavor of using the grappling rules, players must now chew on pulled teeth while performing the appropriate rolls. |
| sambudak08-22-07, 09:32 PM | 65. My mom won't let us play it in the basement or the garage. |
| keyunp08-22-07, 09:48 PM | 55. The game will be renamed "Barbie & Ponies" As long as there is a "Mature" version avaliable, then I could live with that. :smirk: (And if you need an explanation please go to the Mature boards) |
| Baernwulf_of_Nor08-22-07, 10:17 PM | 65) 4e will be worth buying, or even noting the existence of. 66) The WoTC people made this edition to actually make Dungeons & Dragons better, and not just to make money.:bored: 67) Through fixing various problems with 3e many new problems will slip through the cracks. Therefor creating an impossible loop where the solution of problems only causes more problems, until the great rift is opened and we suddenly realize that 462.3634e is actually just AD&D. 68) That better mechanics are worth the sacrifice of imagination and creativity. Also, humanity is too stupid to handle such "advanced" game mechanics(see #67) so now we need computers to help us. Therefor making D&D slowly more reliant on the computer until everyone is playing D&D online, now called, 765e. Why WoTC, why?:weep: BoN |

| Sarrazon08-22-07, 11:26 PM | 12. They include phyonics in players handbook. Psionics will be core in 4e. Just felt like pointing that out. |
| Waldo_di08-22-07, 11:35 PM | Psionics will be core in 4e. Just felt like pointing that out. Then were already doomed. |
| Sarrazon08-22-07, 11:39 PM | Meh, Psionics isn't half bad. I've never been too intrested in the system myself, but my brother loves it, and from what I've seen, it should be core. (This is my opinion of course, but it's more balanced than the PHB) |
| Escef08-23-07, 12:16 AM | For the record, "dices" is a word, but only when used as a verb meaning to cut into fine pieces. E.g.: He dices the tomatoes for the taco bar fresh every day. But when used in reference to our favorite little random number generators, die is singular, dice is plural, and dices is retarded. You don't want to be retarded, do you? ;) |
| dknight10008-23-07, 12:27 AM | The problem with psionics is that in 3.x, they weren't core, and mimic'ed the magic system anyway, except were considered seperate. Because it wasn't core, and is such a large feature, its not really covered by anything, and tends to leave a tacked on the end feeling, as well as not integrating well anyway. If included in core, then it can be designed to work in properly with the system, and hopefully have its own flavor, rather than feeling like for the most part WotC made reprinted the magic system, said it wasnt magic, and got lots of people to buy it. Sort of like Truenames in AE - i never liked them in standard Dnd, as they were a late edition, and in terms of what they were, massively world influencing if they were used. Something so intrinsic to a character should not be "tacked on the end". When i read about Truenames in AE, i gave a shudder at first, then realised that in AE, Monte had thoroughly integrated them into the setting and the system, making them not just acceptable, but an interesting and cool mechanic. |
| ShinoAburame08-23-07, 12:39 AM | I'm just hoping 4edition becomes more like nethack. I want a nethack d20 damnit! d30.. whatever.. http://www.retroremakes.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/14_nethack_dungeon.png This is what a D&D map should look like! And the player's handbook should have all the nethack classes! "I'm gong to play a human samurai who dual-wields scmitars!" "I'm going to play an orc wizard who has an eyepatch!" "I'm going to play a gnome tourist who has a thick Canadian accent eh?!" |
| dknight10008-23-07, 12:46 AM | following on from the nethack suggestion... 69) Lacking trail rations, strict starvation rules will require my noble elven wizard to eat gnomes for nourishment. ::EDIT:: In all honesty, in nethack i eat gnome corpses whenever i'm not playing a gnome, before i eat my trail rations. The mental image of a wizard/archeologist/tourist etc picking the flesh off a freshly killed gnome is just awesome. |
| MagickHobo08-23-07, 01:18 AM | 70) No half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Half-Ogres etc. Half-Human is a template in the monster manual that essentially makes any race suck mechanically, but "awesome for roleplaying." Also: Kobolds as a core race would be awesome. I'd play one. |
| JoAT08-23-07, 02:05 AM | 71) With the removal of gnomes, 4E will cripple the world via an immense surplus of underpants. |
| arderkrag08-23-07, 02:43 AM | 72) Wizards cares nothing about the game or its future. 73) Only slight changes will be made, but they will somehow be enough to require a re-purchase of every book you own. 74) Number 73 will repeat every 5 years until, 25 years from now, the game runs on a system that is completely unwieldy and runs entirely on d4s. Then, the game will be scrapped, having fulfilled Wizards' greed. ________________________________________ ____________ Note: If you actually hold those beliefs, you are a very sad individual and need to quit littering the boards with your pessimism. |
| navar10008-23-07, 02:57 AM | Plural = πληθυντικός One dog (ένα σκυλί) Ten dogs (δέκα σκυλιά) One die Ten dice You wouldn't say ten dices, because dices isn't a word. Actually it is, just not in the original intended meaning. 'The cook dices carrots to put in the salad.' :D |
| _Infinite08-23-07, 03:23 AM | What happen to all the Dms with the Afros???:D the D&D teaser was cute... But if i have a DM with a Fro and he'll be staring down on the rulebooks with the screen about him...i'll be staring at a hamster that just caught jolts from a chain lightning spell...and squeking in annoyance... Never want that in my life of D&D experiance... |
| Andorxor08-23-07, 03:50 AM | 75) They will sell only copies written in elvish. 76) All 4.edition books will be cursed 77) WotC will put mindcontrolling drugs on the pages of the books and uses its army of enslaved gamers to conquer Alaska 78) The magic in 4E will be real and careless wizards player will ignite the houses where they play |
| BilopTheFleshwarper08-23-07, 03:50 AM | 71) With the removal of gnomes, 4E will cripple the world via an immense surplus of underpants. BWAHAHAHA! I lol'ed. No really, and I hate lol. stupid AOLisms... 1. steal underpants 2. ???? 3. Profit! ALSO.... 79) 4th ed is perfect and no other fantasy RPG product is ever bought after it's release. |
| DrStalker08-23-07, 05:54 AM | 79) The new magic system will be based on Harry Potter and will require a pseudo-latin phrase to trigger each spell. |
| ShinoAburame08-23-07, 06:22 AM | 80) A new alignment system will be issued that more accurately resembles the D&D mindframe of good/evil axis. Lawful Absolutist Subjectivist Neutral And Chaotic Objectivist 81) The new alignment system is introduced by putting Ayn Rand was pre-made evil npc lich for a plothook. |
| mkill08-23-07, 09:52 AM | 82) 4th edition was just a joke and we're stuck with D&D3.5 Fighter threads forever. 83) D&D4 is so much fun even your mum will start to play it. 84) You still have to roll your hit points. 85) Since Mialee was so unpopular she'll be replaced by Nialee, her younger sister, which will look like an anthropomorphic kobold with pointy ears in a Issey Miyake dress. |
| Ohtar Turinson08-23-07, 10:07 AM | 84) You still have to roll your hit points. See, I don't consider that an irrational concern. I consider that a faint hope. But to each their own. |
| IRememberCecil08-23-07, 01:34 PM | 80) A new alignment system will be issued that more accurately resembles the D&D mindframe of good/evil axis. | TyWebb08-23-07, 04:55 PM | 86. They're going to remake the D&D move with 4e rules. |
| Dontgothere08-23-07, 06:45 PM | 49. That 4E will be an actual RPG as opposed to a knock-off WoW on paper. We all know WotC loves World of Warcraft! |
| bonethug010808-23-07, 07:12 PM | 87. That 4e will be like WoW. |
| Gryllmyre08-23-07, 07:17 PM | 88. That all the half-teasers we are getting that are currently being called 'answers to questions' will finally be made clear with a tidal wave of released rules to be heavily scrutinized by the player base as the enflamed forum discussions force a conformity and acceptance. Oh, wait. Well, we'll see I guess. |
| JoAT08-23-07, 07:20 PM | BWAHAHAHA! I lol'ed. No really, and I hate lol. stupid AOLisms... 1. steal underpants 2. ???? 3. Profit! ALSO.... Thank yew, thank yew, I'm here all... 9 months. 89) That it comes with a special chip, which upon massive release of the books, forces those who complain about it's existence to play other games, and complain about other companies products, but never say a word against D&D or 4E. |

| Escef08-24-07, 12:02 AM | 79) 4th ed is perfect and no other fantasy RPG product is ever bought after it's release. 79) The new magic system will be based on Harry Potter and will require a pseudo-latin phrase to trigger each spell. Ok, guys, we got two 79's here, somebody funched up. 91) 4E will make D&D just as cool as smoking and driving motorcycles. And this was the most recent, which would be renumbered to 92. Whoever goes next, your giving us number 93, k? And yes, I am just that big an ass. |
| bonethug010808-24-07, 12:37 AM | 93. 4e will require you to turn in your brain to gleemax in order to assimilate you into the gaming community. |

Kenders are to replace halflings and gnomes into one "super race" 98. Roleplaying dwarves requires a decent Scottish accent and a love for ale. And chin hair... even if you are a female gamer. 99. Elf subraces will bloat to a whopping 101 different pointy-eared freaks. 100. Half races are going to allow the coupling of such odd elements as dwarves/elves, kender/orcs, and human/human |

| DrStalker08-26-07, 10:11 PM | 105) To solve the ongoing problem of "elf bloat" the subraces of elves will be switching to a system of random prefixes and suffixes. But I LIKE Ayn Rand, Anthem was a great critique of Collectivism in fictional format! 136: For rules on grappling a White Wolf, see page XX |
| DrStalker08-27-07, 02:37 AM | 137) Although grappling has been simplified what has not been mentioned is there are now additional separate rules for holding, pinning, escaping, striking a held opponent, disarming a grappled opponent, improved grabbing an opponent, the monster feat for improved grabbing of opponents, pinning with aid of a friend, casting a spell while grappling and consensual grappling between two (or more) adults. Each of these uses a completely different mechanic. |
