| Sacred_Dreams10-31-05, 12:03 PM | Hello, and welcome to 1,001 Uncommon uses for Common Weapons thread! In this thread I have a few rules 1. No foul language 2. No flaming 3. No double posting of uses 4. Have fun! To begin I will say: 1. Using a bastard sword as a rotissourie spit. 2. Using a quarterstaff as a polevault. 3. Making shurikens posterboard tacks (i recommend this if you're hunted by evil things or vice versa) 4. Use a heavy mace as a meat tenderizer, even if the meat is still alive  |
| jakefm237710-31-05, 12:29 PM | 5) trident as a coat rack (stick the shaft in the gound straight up) 6) dagger as a toothpick 7) whip as a jump rope or if you want to add a degree of diffuctly use a spiked chain |
| anshar10-31-05, 12:40 PM | 8. Use the hollowed-out skull of a dragon to haul it's treasure out of it's lair. (I had a couple of PCs actually do this once. It was so unexpected I just had to allow it.) |
| Outla10-31-05, 06:34 PM | tying a rope to a tower shield can make it a sled, or a stretcher. a tower shield set on top of something might make a good picnic table. a character with craft (cooking) might use a shield over a fire to bake flatbread or tortillas, or use it as a wok. a tower shield can be used for diving. when it's on your arm it gives -20 to swim checks, you sink like a stone, but when you loosen it from your arm it's a large wooden object so it gives you a bonus to swim checks -- you can float back to the surface. yeah, those are shields... but shields can be weapons too. |
| rbrt_Spade10-31-05, 06:57 PM | 9-you can build a house of quarterstaffs(thier free :D ) 10-spears can be used for many things-spearing and cooking the bbeg when your locked in a room as a spit |
| Chimera24510-31-05, 07:34 PM | A Scroll of Prestidigitation (or any other near-useless spell) If you're playing d20 Modern instead of D&D, you could sell it to a museum for a couple hundred dollars easy. Cast Grease on one side of a hill, and the children will have hours of fun. Using Scry to peek into the girls' locker room. Cast Fireball straight up into the air at night for fireworks. |
| Herald@Large10-31-05, 08:09 PM | 19. Cloak or blanket + 2 spear shafts or 10' poles or quarterstaves = a stretcher. 20. Silver pieces = improvised sling bullets vs lycanthropes. 21. Iron spikes = diversion for a rust monster. |
| Slumbersigh10-31-05, 08:58 PM | An automobile can be a weapon in the wrong hands. |
| Bane10-31-05, 10:30 PM | Vial of acid - Lockpick Adamantine Heavy Flail - Door opener Summoned animals - Trapfinders |
| Orayn, Elvish Blademaster10-31-05, 11:16 PM | DnD doesn't have towels as we know them, but any towel-like tool is the most useful thing possible. They can be blankets, air filters, sails, weapons, tents, stretchers, bandages, gloves, flags, or capes. You can always dry yourself off with them, but that's no fun. :D |
| Novacat10-31-05, 11:20 PM | Just to mention a couple things: tying a rope to a tower shield can make it a sled, or a stretcher. In at least one military which used tower shields in their armies, they were often used as stretchers. The Roman soldiers were instructed to come back with their shields, or in them. Also: a tower shield can be used for diving. when it's on your arm it gives -20 to swim checks, you sink like a stone, but when you loosen it from your arm it's a large wooden object so it gives you a bonus to swim checks -- you can float back to the surface. Generally speaking, tower shields have sufficient metal on them to be heavier than the water they displace, or at least not light enough to carry a person to the surface. Back to weapons, though. Net as a pom-pom. Scythe to harvest wheat (omg thats crazy talk!!) Siangham as a nose-stud (the weird looks are just because they're jealous) In a game I ran, a character who was in prison tried to hide his money in his sap (he didn't have many coins), and hide that up his butt. I stared blankly for a few minutes. I then rolled a 10% chance that the guards would walk by at just that moment. Let's just say that the guards probably had the same initial reaction that I did. |
| Novacat10-31-05, 11:22 PM | 20. Silver pieces = improvised sling bullets vs lycanthropes. Super excellent idea. I had never thought of that. Guess who's characters will start carrying their money in silver... |
| The Vorpal Tribble10-31-05, 11:32 PM | Unfortunately its only alchemical silver that'll work on them. I once tried to feed a werewolf a hunk of meat with a silver coin stuffed inside and had this pointed out to me :( |
| Novacat11-01-05, 05:31 PM | This has potential to be a very amusing post, so I'll bump it. |
| Novacat11-01-05, 07:56 PM | Unfortunately its only alchemical silver that'll work on them. I once tried to feed a werewolf a hunk of meat with a silver coin stuffed inside and had this pointed out to me :( Um... where'd you read that? I looked up Lycanthopes in the Monster Manual, and no where did it say that the silver MUST be alchemical silver. My understanding is that real silver is generally too soft to use as a weapon, so alchemical silver is used as a substitute. Not to mention that the traditional werewolf legends say silver, not alchemical silver. |
| Thanqol11-02-05, 03:49 AM | Summoned animals - Trapfinders That is NOT uncommon. |
| Bane11-02-05, 09:51 AM | Good point. How about my Tiefling Wizard's slightly different take on it? Mind controlled peasants - Trapfinders. :D |

| Titan W11-02-05, 06:15 PM | Rogue's +1 daggers as tent pegs... Fortress made of a dragon's husk, just gut, carve off the meat, and use the bones for supports, like most reptile skin I doubt it would decompose quickly, and that's what med/repair is for; why bother to move the horde? make it your home! ((Note: after other dragons notice the opening and start trying to get in you can expand your fortess even more, and get Exp.)) Sword and mallet as a bard insturment. Baleful polymorph large enemy into rabbit, place in bag of holding, drop that into portable hole for m a distance. (Okay that's not so unusual) |
| gnomeman11-02-05, 08:46 PM | If a female PC or NPC is having problem with giving birth, go fetch a giant (This is best used with a net) PC gets the good king wife pregnant, use Vampiric touch! You've got yourself a nice statue/ coat rack. |
| Azual11-02-05, 09:07 PM | DnD doesn't have towels as we know them, but any towel-like tool is the most useful thing possible. They can be blankets, air filters, sails, weapons, tents, stretchers, bandages, gloves, flags, or capes. You can always dry yourself off with them, but that's no fun. :D Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Towels played an iconic role in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (HHGG). They are described as the most "massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." The fictitious time/space traveller and Guide Researcher Ford Prefect uses the idiom "a frood who really knows where his towel is" to mean someone generally alert and aware. In the HHGG universe, a hitchhiker who carries a towel can always find a ride, because if someone is carrying a towel, it is assumed by a strag (however illogically) that they also have a toothbrush, a bathroom kit, shower shoes, hair nets, maps, a toolbox, tickets to the opera, finely lapped silicone wafers, a set of encyclopedias, an astonishing array of credit cards, travellers checks, etc. For this reason, hitchhikers were directed by the Guide to always carry a towel to maintain the appearance that they would make a good guest. In addition, a towel can be used as a hammock, a blanket, or a cape. The corners of the towel can be soaked in vitamins, and useful bits of wire can be woven into the towel. The corners of a towel can also be tied together to make a bag. If wet, the towel can even be used in mêlée combat. You can use it to hide from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous). courtesy of Wikipedia! :D |
| Wildonion11-02-05, 09:34 PM | While on the subject of useful towls (I know this is Star Wars but I figured I would post it) my friends and I are confident we can create 1000 uses for the All Temperature Cloak. We have rigged it with a breathalizer to keep a guy KO'ed, blocked security cameras, used them as slings (in both senses of the word medically and in combat), we tied a guy up with one, then used some tied together to slip out a window. All this and we are still only level 4. |
| Sacred_Dreams11-03-05, 11:59 AM | I would like you all to number the uses so we dont get confused on what number we are on. Sorry I should've put that as a rule. Now it is! |
| Parrex11-03-05, 12:02 PM | Keep in mind that an empty bag of flour torn apart on two edges is essentially a towel :) |
