| Megrim_Lord09-19-04, 03:39 PM | Ever had that one player that just annoys you to no end, does something irrevocably stupid every meet, or just plain doesn't play? Well, the gods of old always liked to curse those kinds of flies every time they land in the ointment. Curses can be an amusing, interesting way to vary the gameplay. Classic curses are gender benders, alignment switchers, things like that, but they need more flavor. Can we come up with more? lets find out. 1. Every time the character exits or enters a room, Darth Vader's theme music from star wars booms throughout a 100ft radius. (Dun dun dun dun da dun dun da dun...) 2. Whenever the character takes a drink, he/she hears the sound of a rushing river in their head, and must relieve themselves within the next 5 minutes or their bladder ruptures and their insides become infected (leave the damage up to the dm) 3. The character's middle fingers grow to 1ft in length. 4. Whenever the character fires a ranged weapon, it sounds like a laser blaster |
| HidroliX09-19-04, 04:26 PM | 5. When he lies, his nose becomes bigger  (pinokio anyone??) |
| Ratheus09-19-04, 04:35 PM | 6. A stinking cloud and permanancy is cast upon the character 7. The characters combat actions and results are announced over loud speakers by football commentators...or worse the guys from MXC 8. Whenever character enters a town, a plague of insects follows him in 9. Incredible growth of body hair causes people to think he's a werewolf 10. Rocks and stones appear in the character's backpack, pocket, pouches, etc just to bog him down. No reason why, it just keeps happening 11. Helium breath! |
| Seeker9509-19-04, 04:36 PM | 6. He itches all the time. 7. His tastebuds get reversed. |
| Ratheus09-19-04, 04:38 PM | double post, sorry |
| mercurywyrm09-19-04, 05:13 PM | 1. Character's body changes colors randomly whenever they hear their name! 2. Character goes into a fit of uncontrollable laughter whenever they try to write something untill they give up trying to write. 3. Any weapon the character weilds gets stuck to their hands and they can't let go unless they sing a lullaby to a spectral kitten that will follow them around and is unkillable. 4. Character is haunted by a REALLY annoying ghost who can't be killed. |
| Ratheus09-21-04, 04:33 AM | ...taking into account poor numbering... 18. Player is forced to talk in rhymes 19. An immortal wasp that likes to sting the character 20. Character is followed by bad luck....and everybody knows it's him causing it 21. Character no longer is entitled to critical hits 22. Can no longer hold his beer 23. Gives off a random smell each round, create a massive 1d100 smell chart to fit 24. Everytime the character touches gold, it turns into crud 25. Whenever character talks to opposite sex, a bad comedy laughtrack strikes up 26. All spells become something funny (magic whistle, tickling grasp, meatball, phlegm sphere, ice thorn, etc. 27. Inability to urinate without splashing clothing 28. Is constantly visited by imaginary NPCs 29. When in combat, a hit has to be re-rolled 30. Eye color changes constantly 31. He is stuck in your DM screen, forever combating that giant spider 32. PC must come up with a new name every round 33. Clothing deteriorates within a day 34. Is incorporeal.....when in taverns 35. Is followed by lousy soundtrack featuring songs by pink floyd, snoop dog, acdc, queen, eminem, jennifer lopez, brittney spears, afro man, etc (enough...I put the +5 heavy crossbow to my head and coup de grace myself...) Wow, I want to coup de grace myself for the thought of that soundtrack (shudder) 36. Everybody around appears to be BBEG 37. Is compelled to take craft: humorous characatures 38. Striken with "happy feet" at inoportune times that's twenty, folks. I know you can match. |
| shift24409-21-04, 05:47 AM | 39. curse of the "baby cheeks". for no reason in particular, everyone the PC/player meets would pinch his/her cheek(s). (Either left, right or both) 40. same as above, but the cheeks on the lower half of the body :D *hint* *hint* |
| Fernandes09-21-04, 12:40 PM | Not so much comedic as royally annoying, but in a recent campaign, my character was stricekn by a dying curse from a vanquished foe (the foe was captured, tried for his various and sundry crimes, and uttered the curse just as he was aboutto die at teh end of a hangman's rope - it was very dramatic in that way). The curse was to ruin his reputation and make people think he was an evil criminal (strictly speaking he WAS a criminal, but we're talking 'burning children to death for the pleasure of hearing them scream' sort of evil) - a fate taht was probably intended to get him executed in jsut the same manner as his dead foe (naturally, we effected daring and heroic escape, but that's another story). Other good ones 42. Whenever teh cahracter hears anything at all musical - even if it's just a village-boy humbing a tune, he is compelled to dance until it stops. God help him if someone starts huming multiple tunes at once. 43. the character becomes pathologically incapable of telling the truth. He may be able to intimate what he wishes to express, or communicate it by non-verbal means (writting, magicla telepathy, ECT) but he can never make a direct and truthful statement of fact. 44. If teh curse is to teach teh character a lesson, he might be compelled to always at in a certain way with regards to an appropriate situation. Somoene cursed for their callous ways, for example might be compelled to always come to teh aid of an innocent in distress. |
| Sulaco09-21-04, 12:43 PM | 7. His tastebuds get reversed. What do you mean by "reversed" in this context? |
| Seeker9509-21-04, 09:45 PM | What do you mean by "reversed" in this context? This is a real condition! Salty items taste sweet and sweet items taste salty. It makes dessert a really difficult endeavor. |
| Fernandes09-25-04, 01:31 AM | Anothyer good one - some random activity which the character performs on a regular basis becaumes excrutiatingly painful. Frequently used to punish gluttons and lechers (for obvious reasons), but obviously useful in other contexts. Probably should not be used for somethign that is essential in order for the character to function as a member of the aprty (holding a sword for a fighter, for example, or spellcasting for a mage, are just lame) buit It could definatly be somethign strategically inconveniant. |
| Ratheus09-25-04, 03:24 PM | 46. Mental control over left and right side of body is reversed. Now everything is off hand 47. Character always forgetting simple things - getting dressed, unsheathing sword, stringing bow, tie up horse, putting on belt to keep pants from falling down 48. Character's personal enemy becomes large stone buildings 49. Sneezing fits 50. Desire to pick up, pet, name and keep dire rats as pets 51. All food is too spicy 52. Each round of combat, character must make a saving throw or be compelled to hide 53. Character likes copper pieces so much more, he exchanges all his money into copper. 54. Lycanthropy! From werefleas! 55. A dream / vision / hallucination so strong the character actually believes he has become a vampire 56. Is attracted to cursed items 57. Character likes to cuddle a cactus |
| Joni-san09-25-04, 04:44 PM | 58.) Getting splashed with cold water reverses the character gender. Getting splashed with hot water turns one back to ones original state 59.) Every time the character is alone a squirrel appears and starts throwing nuts at the character and then explodes 60.) Character gets a date with Cthulhu |
| Megrim_Lord09-25-04, 08:00 PM | 35. Is followed by lousy soundtrack featuring songs by pink floyd, snoop dog, acdc, queen, eminem, jennifer lopez, brittney spears, afro man, etc (enough...I put the +5 heavy crossbow to my head and coup de grace myself...) Wow, I want to coup de grace myself for the thought of that soundtrack (shudder) Now I can understand most of that, but pink floyd and acdc? thats good music man! |
| Ogre4Hire09-26-04, 01:45 AM | 61. Character is constantly being mistaken for Vash the Stampede. 62. Character's footsteps become extremely loud, resulting in a -20 penalty to Move Silent checks. 63. Character has two left feet. 64. Character gains high spell resistance, but it applies to beneficial spells as well (be careful with this one, since it inhibits healing). 65. Miniture storm cloud constantly hovers over character's head. 66. Character is constantly followed by the Disco Imps, who respawn in 1D4 Minutes if killed. 67. Character is constantly forced to recite lines from the Dungeons & Dragons movie. |
| Dthamilaye09-26-04, 07:15 AM | Heh, I just have to butt in here, even if this is bit off topic. My players just went through an old accessory named the Sabre River (IMC, I use old adventures and just convert them on the fly). In the end, there was a (36 HD) dragon turtle while the group was some 500 feet underwater. After 1 round of fighting, Sorc then cast Bestow Greater Curse with the following: Curse: Will always float in water. Redemption (must be doable in 1 year): Plant 100 trees. Dragon turtle then threw '2' as a save and proceeded to raise that 500 feet to float on the water (quite frustrated). When the players got things done, they still did not want to leave the turtle there (floating on water). Well, sorc casted Reality maelstorm (Manual of the planes) and Dragon turtle threw '1' as save. Whee, he and a bunch of water was sucked to random plane.... which was then checked ... Celestia. Nice going. :). So the floating dragon turtle would need to plant 100 trees in Celestia. We got a good laugh thinking about some angels thinking "What the .... ?" when they saw a dragon turtle planting acorns on some beach in Celestia, while keeping as low profile as possible... |
| Ratheus09-26-04, 05:43 PM | Now I can understand most of that, but pink floyd and acdc? thats good music man! Sorry, I should clarify. I mean the same three to four songs that's been played to death on the radio, everyday, every two hours, for the past twenty-thirty years (how many times do we have to listen to "hey you" before we get sick of it? Does the radio industry think that only three songs by a band qualify for radio play?) That's my problem. |
| JabberWocky09-26-04, 05:46 PM | 68. The character is pursued by a swarm of squirrels with Rogue levels (max Sleight of Hand and Hide). They don't directly follow him; instead, they hide in the most unexpected places, leaping out to swarm over the character's face for 1d4 rounds (all enemies have concealment, and the character takes a -4 circumstance penalty on attack rolls, damage rolls, saves, and skill checks). At the end of this time they run off, and there is a 50% chance that they steal one item weighing no more than 5 lbs from the character. |
| Ogre4Hire09-26-04, 07:06 PM | Sorry, I should clarify. I mean the same three to four songs that's been played to death on the radio, everyday, every two hours, for the past twenty-thirty years (how many times do we have to listen to "hey you" before we get sick of it? Does the radio industry think that only three songs by a band qualify for radio play?) That's my problem. Boy, do I hear that. I've heard the same songs over so many times that I've began loathing even the decent bands on the local station. I'm considering sticking the radio at work under one of the pieces of heavy machinery. 69. During combat, the character has a 50% chance/round of having his/her pants fall down. Enemies within 30 ft must make a Will save or lose their next actions as they laugh uncontrollably (treat as if stunned). |
| Coran09-29-04, 07:54 PM | 70) Cursed with the Touch of Wonder. Every thing he touch is affected by wand of wonder effect. 71) Random Equipment Disapears and reappears 2 feet in front of you. 72) Everyone withing 30ft of you must stare at you. |
| Pyre09-29-04, 11:29 PM | 67. Character is constantly forced to recite lines from the Dungeons & Dragons movie. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!! 73. The character is horribly prone to tripping... kinda like the two left feet one. 74. Plants and foliage are compelled to reach out and attach themselves to the character's ankles whenever he walks. 75. The character turns gray and must put his hands over his head with the pinky and index finger extended (anime style) whenever he's depressed... or other anime-like overplaying. 76. Is now under the impression that at least one of his companions is the avatar of the goddess of destruction. |
| Cravensson09-30-04, 10:42 AM | 77. When character becomes peeved, he turns into a troll (aka The Incredible Hulk) and starts smashing things, starting with his most prized magic items. Note that this is a curse, and therefore it never happens when it would actually be *beneficial* for the character, no matter how enraged the character becomes. |
| BloodKnight09-30-04, 10:34 PM | Makes dwarves smell clean :P |
| Thanqol10-01-04, 02:37 AM | 79: Cursed player must produce at least 4 lines of exeptionaly horrible poetry based on death, evil, or loneliness a day, and spend at least three hours a day in the town's graveyard. |
| Ogre4Hire10-01-04, 01:52 PM | 80. Character gains BO that is so awful that Trogolodites won't come near him. |
| Nuntius12810-01-04, 01:59 PM | 81. Character looks like yo mama(burn). |

Curse of the Hero (Character is convinced of his own superiority and will tackle the most difficult challenges to prove it). 83. Curse of the Dilligent Man (character must constantly strive to be active, only stopping when extreme exhaustion causes collapse). 93. Curse of the Agile Man (25% chance of falling to the ground whenever any dexterity related skill is used). 95. Curse of the Cut Purse (character is unable to store money on his person, as holes seem to cause all coins to fall to the ground). 96. Curse of the Immaculate Feline (whenever inactive for more than 5 minutes, there is a 25% chance that character will begin cleaning himself with his tongue). 97. Curse of the Stable Mind (Character becomes inflexible whenever making decisions. Once his mind is made up, there is nothing that will deter him, even if new information causes the original idea to become invalid). 98. Curse of the Starved Snacker (character is compelled to eat continuously). 99. Bleeder's Curse (blood will trickle from a random orifice (1-4 head, 5-6 lower extremities) for 1d6 rounds causing a -4 penalty to charisma checks once the blood becomes visible). 100. | The_EvilDungeon_Master10-16-04, 02:43 PM | 3. The character's middle fingers grow to 1ft in length. While some might consider this a curse, I would take this as :censored: awesome. |
| Rarus11-08-04, 10:19 PM | B.u.m.p. :p |
| Ascian01-15-05, 04:13 PM | 121. Upon meeting someone new, a roll of 1 on a d10 means they hazily recall some past kinship with the individual, and are positive they've 'got an in' with them. This applies to monsters as well as NPCs. 122. Whenever the subject rolls a 1 on any attack or skill check, they become severely disheartened, stop whatever they're doing, and launch into a tirade about how they never wanted to be an adventurer anyway; they always wanted to be... A LUMBERJACK! 123. The subject forgets all languages known and becomes illiterate. 124. The subject has difficulty understanding any tactical plan which does not involve dressing in drag. Whenever possible, the subject will attempt to steer others' plans in this direction. 125. The subject is under the delusion that zie is at least three feet taller than zie really is, and reacts appropriately to all doorways, ceilings, tree branches, and etc. 126. The subject's sense of volume is reversed. Whispers are deafening, and shouting can barely be heard. Resultantly, the subject does a lot of shouting in order to be heard over the din of, for example, any paint drying in the vicinity. 127. The subject believes that the party is a literal family in which zie is the grandmother. 128. The subject loses the ability to differentiate between individuals or recognize any individuals based on appearance. This applies to persons as well as monsters. The subject takes a -20 penalty on Spot checks to see through disguises. 129. The subject is seized by the certainty that cattle are secretly plotting to take over the world. Upon seeing any cow or assembly of cows, the subject is compelled to search it for polearms and interrogate it as to the wherabouts of its king. 130. The subject becomes firmly convinced that rocks are the primary staple of a healthy diet. Any health problems this causes will be attributed to the subject not getting *enough* rocks in zir diet. 131. The subject loses the ability to complete sentences, forgetting what zie was saying half-way through, only to remember once zie gives up trying. 132. The subject believes, falsely, that zie has gained some amazing new ability. Examples; the subject *thinks* that everything zie touches turns to gold, the subject *thinks* zie can turn into a horrible berserker monster at will, the subject *thinks* zie can turn invisible and intangible, etc. 133. The subject's sex drive is completely replaced with an equally lascivious desire to eat potatoes. 134. The subject believes that zir sex has been magically swapped. Male subjects will believe that they *were* female until the curse was cast, and vice-versa. May be seized by desire to quest to 'correct' themselves. 135. The subject believes that zie is living in a random sci-fi, fantasy, or horror setting, and behaves accordingly, Spaceman Spiff-style. 136. The subject's mouth spawns random vermin every 3d20 minutes. For a more evil curse, randomize the oriface. 137. The subject's Coke tastes like Pepsi. 138. The subject's hair grows at a rate of one foot per hour. 139. The subject can now taste with every part of zir body. 140. Each night the subject is enveloped by a massive coccoon, only to emerge the next morning in a randomly generated humanoid body. |
