we all know some cool stuff the pc's can do if they find themselves in a mass battle / war of some kind. mages can send fireballs hurtling into enemy ranks, rogues can sneak up behind the enemy lines and kill enemy commanders, and fighters can take down enemy tropps ith ease.

but i was thinking...

what ingenuitive ways can the pc's help out in unusual ways. for example , i heard somewhere;

1) the pc's fill metal scroll cases with gunpowder ( renascence (sp?) game ) and add caltrops, and entrench them at the right angle. the wizard/ whatever mage hand's a torch/firesource into them and BAM! instant mortor.

good luck! (sorry for my spelling / grammer i had to type in 28 seconds :) )

Continual Light on stone inside hollow bamboo tube (flashlight).
Alchemist Fire or tanglefoot bags in catapults.
Thunderstone and/or clatrops in catapults.
powder lye can be a nasty surprise if you are expecting, or creating rain in the near future.

8) Putting a torch to the wall of an entire chamber covered in spiderwebs to "Check if there's anything hiding in the room", taking out nearly three dozen monstrous spiders in the process.

this was in our first dungeon of our first campaign. we were fighting 8 kobolds stockpiled behind a table. so our monk snuck over and flipped the table. he got a 20. almost every kobold failed the reflex save and he ended up killing 7 out of the 8

This was something that I made my group do. We opened the door on some ritual thing, then:
Pour oil onto opponents,
cast burning hands at them,
throw 2 bombs (yes, we had them) at opponents,
close door.
We heard an explosion and didn't bother to check back inside.

The first proper 'boss fight' of the latest campaign I'm in...

DM: "Walking down the steps, you find it ends at a portcullis. Two leopards are just behind it, staring at you through the bars."
Me: "Wait. A portcullis? So we can see through it, no problem? And they're right there?"
DM: "That's right."
Me: "I walk up to the bars and color spray the leopards in the face."

Long story short, they both failed their saves, and I and my partner (two-member party, gestalted to boost power - I'm a beguiler//rogue, she's a bard/scout//fighter aiming for Dervish) walk in and murderize them with nary a tribble at all.

This is not really a battle tip but it is more of a useful adventuring tip.

Undead horses are much better than live ones. They don't eat, or sleep or get scared. You can keep stuff in their body cavity. Also at night they double as a frame for your tent and since they don't sleep they can keep watch for you.

A flask of oil and a few tinder twigs tied on. Alchemist's fire for the common fighter.

Alsway have SOMETHING Masterwork Silver. a dagger, hand axe, Something! Nothing is worse than a were rat infecting your Frenzied Bezerker and you with no way of slowing it down.

Remember, Engineer Profession can let you examine enemy fortifications for weak points.

There is NOTHING preventing a Ranger from taking Craft Alchemy. They do get access to magic, and that is the only requirement ("being a spellcaster"). With the right feats and weapons, your damage output can make you quite the versitile combatant.

Poison. Underused, and not only for Rouges. Extra damage from any source has, can, and Will save a party when you get into trouble and your casters are out of spells. And if your DM will allow it, harvest your poisons from the dead. Troll blood, Rust Monster antanee, Snake poisons. Anything.

Well that is the best I can do. Plenty of lesser ideas, but thems the best tricks I have.

Forgot one, and this is for the fighters out there. Damage output and meat shielding aren't your only options. In most parties, a trip fighte can control the battle, and in the RIGHT party, can help end the fight befor it even starts.

Ive posted this on other threads, and it started a discussion on the feasibility of my idea, which is...

Pea sized metal balls. My rogue (PLEASE notice the proper spelling!) used to use a bag or two underfoot during fights, causing the target to become unbalanced, if not on his (or its) back. This would sometimes enable a free attack and even a sneak attack or two.

Most discussion was not of the tactics employed, but on how the balls could be made, or even if they could be made using medieval technology. Suffice it to say that the general concensus was it would be relatively easy to make the balls.

This became one of my favorite game tricks, and it worked well.

I LOVE posion myself. My favirote is sassone leaf residue. whenever my ninja has to take out someone (such as enemy commanders) , about 90% of the time he packs some shruiken coated in that stuff. come on , i like a contact posion that can deal 24 hp and 6 con damage many times for only 300gp! sure it's not the best, but even if the opponent survives, it's a perfect softner for the parties fighter to maul them :)

btw I LOVE the undead horses bit. albeit being creepy to commeners when going into town (nothing an illusion or costume won't fix) they sound like a GREAT idea. I am gonna ask my dm if i can have one (our 10th lv wizard is a necromancer)

If the DM says you can't break it, or the object is somehow immune to something, take it! Nothing's better than trying to set fire to a cloth, and hearing the DM say, "You can't do that, the fire just flashes over the cloth and it is unharmed", I say, "I fold it up and take it the **** with me! Free fire resistant robe!"

Sovereign glue and things with continual flame make it very hard for rogues to hide. Stick a rock to them, or anything, and suddenly they can't get away. I used a similar trick, by letting a rogue steal from me, but I had an arcane mark on the item. Well, made it real easy to pick him out later when I used detect magic ^_^.

Ready actions are great... ready actions when waiting for something to come out of hiding, better. Ready action to cast (or in my case use a wand) of ghoul's touch on something with a low fort save means they are not only paralyzed, but they are standing right in front of you, helpless, they lost their chance at striking at you (in this case, it would have been a sneak attack that could have easily killed me *whew*), and they can't get away by hiding again. Puts a quick end to games of hide and seek.

Step 1: Fill a bag of holding with alchemist's fire

Step 2: Give the bag to the least popular member of your party.

Step 3: Convince them to sit in a catapult.

Step 4: Launch them over the enemy.

Step 5: They turn the bag of holding inside out and dump 1500 flasks of alchemist fire on the enemy.

Step 6: Either they have a spell to get themselves out of the air, or they land.

I just got a great idea. Have a druid use a quarterstaff with a Rust Monster antena Soviergn(sp?) Glued to the end. On any sucessful attack roll to see if their armor rusts (provided they wear metal armor). Good for any class also but with a druid there isn't the worry of bumping your armor...

Undead horses have some problems, too...
An evil cleric can take control of them..."Nice Horsie--now run under that low hanging branch/off the cliff/roll over..."
A real horse will not simply wander off a cliff if you fall asleep
A real horse won't get the rabble out, urging you to leave town...with pitchforks...

Still, undead are useful substitutes for rogues..."Zombie, open the door"
BOOM!
Time for a new zombie...

Use rope to keep all the party members connected. This works wonders in countering flying enemies that seek to grappleand drop us from a 100 feet high and also to stop monsters fom luring our members to some trap.

Circle of protection:sheeps. Buy 20 sheeps and make a circle with them around your party. You'll be much harder to be surprised, and don't need to worry with food either:D

Ok, heres a few...
??. Takw two wagons with horses on each and tie a chain to the left side of one and the right side of the other. And during a big out doors battle with plenty of room have them go running along on either side of a large group of enemies taking out a bunch of them with the chain. Also consider putting barbs or spikes on the chain.

??. While defending a city before the enemy breaches the wall (prefferably when their still a distance away from the wall). Have the archers tie smalls sacks with 1 or 2 flasks of oil to one of their arrows. They shoot them and the flasks break either on the enemiers or infront of them. Then have them fire off another volley with flaming arrows...and toasted bad guys.

??. Put a single flasks of alchemist's fire in a catapult, then have someone cast a enlarge items spell on it. Fire it off and you have giant boom and flame.

Now here's one I used to use back in the second edition days.

How to kill are half a dozen heavily armed fighters

1. cast invisibility on yourself
2. Cast fly on yourself.
3. Once you were over the nights cast repulse metal to pin them to the ground. Sure they can see you now but big deal they're stuck
4. Fireball. Now remember they are pained so they do not get a reflect/dexterity bonus save
