1001 Diabolical contracts [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-27-06, 08:04 PM Like the title says. Tell of all the insidious bargains that you've seen in campaigns, not neccessarily involving devils but that's usually the case.

1. I read this story once, flavour for some artifact weapon. Epic warrior who traveled all over the planes looking for worthy opponents. His travels eventually took him to The Nine Hells where he bested a pit fiend in single combat. The pit fiend offered him a deal, in exchange for his life, he would grant the warrior a powerful weapon and adversaries worthy even of his skill. Warrior knew of devils' reputation for insidious bargains and demanded that the blade be unique in form and function and neither he nor the weapon bear any dweomer that the devil did not fully and honestly explain. The devil agreed and sealed the deal, and the warrior's fate!
The warrior recieved the sword which was indeed a mighty weapon and continued his journey. After not meeting the promised adversaries, he came to believe the devil had lied to him about that part of the bargain so he returned to the site of their legendary battle. There he suddenly found six warriors pursuing him, each bearing a sword similiar but not exactly the same as his. He slew them all in turn only to watch in horror as they rose to hunt him anew as vampires. ^^

09-27-06, 08:48 PM 2. Greedy Tom Walker traded his soul to Old Scratch for a business, which had to be corrupt and wicked. He decided against slavery, as it was too wicked for Mr. Walker, so he and Lucifer settled on loan shark.

Tom Walker became rich, very rich, but feared for his soul, so he did the religous thing. Went to church, carried a Bible, sang hymns loudly.

It didn't help. While away from his Bible poor Tom said to one of his broke and unsatisfied clients (something along the times of) "If my rates are unfair may Satan snatch me up".

Poor Tom was never seen again and all this world possessions that were gained through said business crumbled to dust or died or set afire or the like.

Then their's the story of Faust, which is the origin of the Devil and Tom Walker.

09-28-06, 12:42 AM 3. In the John Constantine comic book, Hellblazer (made before the crappy Keanu Reeves movie), Johnny sold his soul to 3 separate dukes of hell. When he died of lung cancer, none of the dukes could claim his soul, because if they tried there would be a cataclysmic war in hell, not worth a single mortal's soul. So Johnny was revived. No more lung cancer for Johnny.

In a popular math problem, the devil came up to a guy and offered him a deal: The money in his purse would double every time he crossed a particular bridge, but he had to give the devil 44 g.p. After crossing the bridge 5(I think) times, he ended up broke. How much money did he have to start with?

5. Another guy traded his soul for immortality. Except by suicide. However, the devil took part of his soul as an advance. Threatened with a repentance in church the devil returned the part he took. The guy killed himself about 10 seconds after his conscience came back.

Remember, always deal with devils, not demons. They'll trick you, but they'll keep their part of the bargain.

Err.. poor wording on this one. Does he have to give the devil 44gp each time he crosses the bridge, or does he have to give the devil 44gp just at the start, when he makes the deal?
