Other times it could be more elaborate, like assembling the parts of a magic item that grants passage through a dangerous plane, or finding the item that will appease a guardian of a magic gate. Let's compile a list of keys that could be used in anyone's next adventure, from the mundane to the fantastic. Please list your keys in the format of problem/solution, door/key, or guardian/item if it is convenient. 1.) A door detects as magic of a particular school, and requires a spell of that same school be cast at the door in counterspell form to unlock it. 2.) A door is etched with a design that is actually an ancient puzzle lock requiring a decipher script check to decode and open. 3.) A magical curtain of unholy/holy/elemental energy will open as long as a character maintains a difficult concentration check. A separate check is needed to maintain the opening for each character that passes the barrier. 4.) A bound air elemental blocks a portal with hurricane force winds, effectively stopping creatures smaller than gargantuan size. The elemental is bored and will allow the party to pass if a character speaks Auran and makes a successful diplomacy check. 5.) The magic gate is programmed to allow passage only to members of a specific race, and it requires a successsful Use Magic Device check to emulate that race and open it. 6.) A wizard's or cleric's door has a puzzle lock in the form of a legend written in draconic/celestial/infernal. A successful Knowledge (Arcana) or Knowledge (Religion) allows the character to press the correct words in the story, opening the door. 7.) A crystal door, or a door sealed with a magic crystal will open if a specific crystal key is touched to it, opening it with sympathetic harmonic resonance. 8.) A cleric's door is sealed with holy/unholy energy, and will open if the appropriate cure/inflict spell is cast at the door as a counterspell. 9.) A planar door is actually a contruct that is sealed with the action of paralyzing poison within it. Of course contructs are immune to poison damage, but this is the purpose of this door and so it is an exception. The door will temporarily open when the poison is neutralized by spell or other means. 10.) A door will only open when the 5 orbs scattered about are charged with positive or negative energy from a cleric's turn or rebuke undead ability. 11.) A bronze dragon wyrm will not allow access to a dungeon within it's territory. It is a genius, and knows the party isn't a pirate gang. Nonetheless, it iwll not even begin to parley with the party unless they present it with a rare black pearl, which bronze dragons find a delicacy. The characters must quest for the pearl, of course. 12.) A gateis sealed with chaotic energy, and the seal can only be broken with a lawful-aligned attack. |

| Azual10-24-05, 09:53 PM | i like this. :) beats the heck outta Zelda Keys. 13.) a key that opens no locks, for a door with no knob. Its a riddle (overused) but i think it would be a kinda cool one. |

Close to your first key, but different enough to mention. So: 14.) This door will only open if positive energy (in the form of a turning check) is channeled into it. (Also, Shadows of the Last War has those really cool key stone things in it. I really liked that.) |
| Darkuwa10-25-05, 01:01 AM | I have a door that i use sometime. It has 4 keys, and depending on what order they are turned in the door goes somewhere else, i usually stick it into any keep they take over. makes 24 different locations, depending on the setting it either goes to different places on the planet or to different planes, sometimes both. |
| anarco_rata10-25-05, 09:48 AM | 16) an intelligent key that will only open the door if she likes you. |
| Azual10-25-05, 03:57 PM | 17) A door that is a large peice of art depicting a hansome and regal lord. intense research finds that this lord later became a vampire. Driving a wooden stake through the red rose emblazoned on the left breast of the man opens the door. |
