I feel the title is fairly self explanatory. Try to avoid using more adult objects in your posts. I'll start with one

1. A bone of the High Priest of Pelor (the church won't let anyone disturb THAT phylactery)
pigknight

04-01-08, 11:00 PM
2. A flesh golem with an int score that is the PCs ally (think Frankenstien's Monster).
3. A piggy bank.
Holy_Beholder

04-01-08, 11:21 PM
4. A gold coin.

Just think about it. It will be used to buy something, then will be lost, and nearly impossibly to track. Its a risky move for the lich, keeping it out of its control, but its going to be really hard to track down. And if it gets melted down and distributed among multiple gold coins(and the lich somehow survives this, maybe because they have a backup phylactery) its even better.

5. A high quality magic weapon, currently being used by the PCs.

If they sold their old one, it really sucks to be them.

6. A floor tile.

7. An eye in a statue of a red dragon

8. A grain of sand on the beach. Now that is hard to find.

9. A thread in a kings clothes

10. A strand of hair thrown into the ocean

11. The Book of Exalted Deeds

Also, can a living creature or large structure be made into a phylactery
Leliel

04-02-08, 07:41 PM
12. A moon rock...that is still on the moon.
Fatalis_902

04-02-08, 07:44 PM
If large structures are allowed, then...
13a. The Prime Material Plane

if not, then...
13b. A small cube of solid adamantine, entombed in a small room several thousand feet beneath the base of an incredibly large mountain, at some indeterminate horizontal location under the mountain, with assorted contingencies to redirect any teleport attempts to get in toa room full of traps guaranteed to kill. In the room with the phylactery is a simple commoner, who will die of thirst or starvation and give you a new body.*

*Yes, this is blatantly paraphrased from some other place. No, I don't care.

14. The heart of a vampire.

14. The heart of a vampire.

14.5 -- The heart of a good princess. (This can be done through a collection of unusual and obscure spells from assorted sources -- I forget the exact list, but there is a method of transforming her heart into an enchantable item.)

15 -- Some mundane object you'd expect to find at the bottom of any junky backpack, such as a pebble, a coin, a paper clip, or similar. The trick is, you take a bag of holding into an antimagic field and put the coin in the bag. Outside of antimagic fields, reaching into the bag reaches into its extradimensional space. Inside AMFs (i.e. the place you'd have to be if you wanted to reach into the bag and grab the phylactery), the phylactery won't register as magical. However, since it still exists, the lich still functions.

oh, i am definately using that princess one.

16) another lich
weezact7

04-02-08, 11:08 PM
17) An Ioun (spelling) Stone. THAT would be something to wake up to.

Warrior: Uhm, Wizard, I think there's a problem with your floating rock...
Wizard: What do you mean?
Warrior: Well, it grew into a skull.

I would like to hear more about the "heart of a princess" method. It sounds suitably diabolical.

18. The material component for Genesis. Once you cast the spell, your phylactery is now a demiplane. (Not my idea.)

19. Shackles of Antimagic, from Arms & Equipment Guide.

20. Bind a creature into service with some sort of calling (NOT summoning) effect. Hand it your phylactery. Cast Flesh to Stone on it - note that the phylactery becomes part of the same stone statue. Then cast Stone Shape (preferably multiple times) to arrange said statue wherever you like under other rock. Use Xorn Movement (or something else that functions like Earth Glide) while transporting the statue in a Bag of Holding or similar device. Make sure to completely fill in your makeshift cavern with conjured stone (like Wall of Stone) when you're done.

21. A crystal sphere (of the spelljammer variety)

22. A rock thrown into the plane of water (pesky adventurers won't be getting to the bottom of that ocean anytime soon)

23. Inside of a box that is programmed to cast repair critical wounds constantly on whatever is inside and cast mordekainens disjuction (or whatever that spell is)/greater dispel on anything within sight outside of the box, which is palced on a insanely thin spire in the middle of a volcanoe on a deserted island in the ocean and surrounded by a anti scrying effect

24. The middle of the spire in outlands

25. A piece of Pelors holy symobl

The very dungeon walls the adventurers have been traversing.
Also helps if the lich makes a fake Phylactery and acts like it is the real one.

They never could understand why the lich wouldn't stay dead.

A +1 sword. You can store it in your home base without worry.

PC1: "Did you find the Lich's phylactery?"
PC2: "No, just a +1 sword."
PC1: "Oh, let's sell it."

EDIT:

The Lich’s Phylactery
An integral part of becoming a lich is creating a magic phylactery in which the character stores its life force. As a rule, the only way to get rid of a lich for sure is to destroy its phylactery. Unless its phylactery is located and destroyed, a lich reappears 1d10 days after its apparent death.

Each lich must make its own phylactery, which requires the Craft Wondrous Item feat. The character must be able to cast spells and have a caster level of 11th or higher. The phylactery costs 120,000 gp and 4,800 XP to create and has a caster level equal to that of its creator at the time of creation.

The most common form of phylactery is a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been transcribed. The box is Tiny and has 40 hit points, hardness 20, and a break DC of 40.

Other forms of phylacteries can exist, such as rings, amulets, or similar items.

Really, a lot of the cheesy phylacteries out there aren't allowed, as it is a magic item requiring some form that can be magically crafted in a wizard lab. And such an item would pop up on a detect magic unless you concealed its aura (magic aura, etc.).

Correct. This is why I suggested the cheap item placed in a bag of holding while the bag's in an antimagic field.

40. Elephant feces

Make part of someone's DNA into your phylactery, and every time they procreate, your phylactery divides into more. Pretty soon, an entire country has a little bit of you inside them, and killing you would require genocide.

This might take epic spells, but tell me it wouldn't be worth it.

The statue of Pelor in The Greatest temple of Pelor with Guardians of (you guessed it) Pelor around it.
Try destroying that!

14. The heart of a vampire.

That's sort of a bad idea, because people ususally destroy vampire's hearts.

43. A grain of salt inside a mountain range, 100,000,000 feet under all of the mountains.

Since we seem to be going with preparations for any contingency instead of descriptiveness:

44. An ornate amulet hidden within a pile of other magical treasure. They definately know that one of the items is the phylactery, but they can't figure out which, so they have to decide between destroying a lot of valuable treasure, or allowing the lich to return.

Antimagic rock that is then transformed into mud (Stone to mud spell)
then mix it in a large soup. Feed it to the chatacters in an out-of-the-way inn after it is digested they will use the bathroom then it returns to the soil and is spread throughout the kingdom

Castle---think Castlevania kind of castle

4. A gold coin.
This. Either spend it in a backwater tavern, or toss it in a collosal red dragon's hoard.
Alternatively, have a random shirt in your wardrobe.

48. A single adamantine ingot.

49. Any sort of unspeakably obscene, juvenile item - the sort you'd find in the back room of a Spencer's. You know what I'm talking about.

50. A quill pen, on the lich's desk. Odds are quite good the party will completely miss it (especially if everything in the room that isn't magical has N-boy's Magic Aura put on it...)

52: the keystone for the archway at the entrance of your lair. Everyone expects the phylactery to be kept close to the lich - who would guess it was a brick on the other side of the castle?

(Flesh to stone on the PCs do gooder, then make him into the phylactery, then use stone to flesh to make him a PC again, but with phylactery goodness.)

I'm still curious. Asking anyone out there with a bump if anyone's got info on this?

( and then, hm. I wonder if there's an official way to remove the heart, lock it somewhere, and keep both the heart and the 'heartless one' alive ... )

Since we seem to be going with preparations for any contingency instead of descriptiveness

In other words, "thinking like a Lich" ... :P

I know some of my players occasionally read this forum. If so ... don't read this post.

So. One of my Liches is planning on this:

A Small Spellstitched Evolved Necropolitan Living (Nimblewright + "Rune Golem") Swordsage. Turned undead by a Corpsecrafter in the most optimal of locations, spellstitched by the wisest cleric she could get her hands on.

Rune Golem, I think. From one of the MMs, a Golem that can cast spells. Given life, and then undeath, still perfectly loyal but now intelligent, too. Swordsage training for evasiveness (Shadow Hand, and Diamond Mind to shore up his Fort Save), plus Hide and Move Silently (why its small, too). Spellstitching for more spells it has per day. Evolved by killing an evolved undead and "syphoning off" some of its essence so it could regenerate and be tougher to kill.

Well, the actual phylactary is a major magic item known as the "Pure Heart" - the Lich-to-be carved out and enchanted her own heart, either regenerating a new one or replacing it with some sort of magic or tiny living construct. The Heart was the source of how the intelligent but unliving construct was given life - specifically so it could be given undeath.

The Pure Heart is located in the chest of this creature, a case for the phylactary and walking, intelligent defense. Who's interested in preserving it, as well. It has two overriding commands - Obey The Master, and Protect The Heart, both of which tie into its self-preservation - if the Master orders, a word will return the Heart to her (permanent Arcane Mark, all it takes is a single spell from her ...), and if the Heart is removed, it 'dies'. All the unlife-force it has is bound into that.

"The Unholy Guard", as It's called, was then given a hat of disguise, an item of nondetection, and everything was covered in Magic Auras. He then went into hiding. Supposed to be stored like any other Phylactary, in meditation or some such ... Should defense become necessary, it can vanish somewhere or go into hiding.

Try and hide a phylactary all you want, but one that can run away and hide is worse. :)

Excellent idea, StruckingFuggle. Though making it an Item Familiar as well would be appropriate for both mechanical and thematic reasons.

And hm, I've never really looked into Item Familiars, I'll have to give 'em a poke.

Antimagic rock that is then transformed into mud (Stone to mud spell)
this could arguably destroy it, if it could even be affected.
then mix it in a large soup. Feed it to the chatacters in an out-of-the-way inn after it is digested
Digestion would destroy it if the rock to mud didn't.
they will use the bathroom then it returns to the soil and is spread throughout the kingdom
no, it's really not.

61. check out the draconomicon. it's got some pretty nifty magic items for dragons and just imagine if you made a phylactery and gave it to a great wyrm red to hang onto. both benefit and as long as there's no + epic characters around it should be safe for a while. all it requires is a diplomacy check and a gift for the dragon
