| Seradec11-09-04, 01:55 PM | Have you, the DM, ever had to have been forced to make up something on the spot that went terribly wrong? Like a NPC you didnt think the players would interact with or the players going down a street you hid away and didnt create properly? heres your chance to confess :D |
| Draco Strang11-09-04, 02:16 PM | Yea...one of my paladins once got drunk in a tavern, and rolled a diplomacy check to get with this really hot chick. He rolls well, and she takes him upstairs. He wakes up next morning with a bunch of gold missing. Now, I had done it as a way to teach him a lesson and add a little flavor to the campaign. But no.........he proceeds to get his gold back. That meant I had to create an entire thieves guild as he was rolling his gather information checks, and make up four different NPCs, and flesh out the girl that took his money, as she was supposed to just be a gypsy that wandered town to town. Damn Righteousness. |

| Bedevere11-09-04, 05:26 PM | Well, since I NEVER plan a session more than half an hour before it starts, this is basically a normal session for me. I just go by what seems fun at the time. Also, the players suspicions that are voiced out loud usually give me good ideas. (Not always taking what they say, and doing it. Sometimes twisting it unrecognisibly....) Seems a lot more fun that way. With several players, all of above average intelligence, and all quite happy to try and out think me, coming up with plot is a waste of time. They will only break it, and try to take over the world while I am trying to cover the gaps... |
| Darth K'Trava11-09-04, 05:52 PM | The DM having to come up with names for some of his NPCs that he wasn't intending on using again just on that offchance our party wants to go find that one guy again..... Or having to think up what to do with a partially/ifnot all ready converted bugbear our party cleric converted to the church of Tyr (with the help of my paladin of Tyr). |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast11-09-04, 05:56 PM | 2 sessions ago, one of my players became so obsessed with trying to get his pet monkey awakened that I had to do a little improvised mini-adventure to accomodate what he planned to do. Being in Eberron's metropolis of Sharn, his gather information checks to find a druid failed. However, on the spot I said that he heard about some urban rangers living in the base of one tower. A little roleplaying, improvisation and gather information checks revealed the rangers ran a crime syndicate. I thought that would put him off. But oh no, he had to track them down, burn down their door (with a little resistance), fight his way to the leader and (eventually with the help of the other PCs) restrain the leader to cough up what he knew. Turns out, he knew of a disowned Syberis heir of Vadalis living on the cliffside. They then tracked him down, forked over the gold, and the monkey was awakened. Suprisingly, it didn't go too badly. They shouldn't have let the 'leader' (who wasnt really the leader) live...the price on their heads is soaring, so they should watch out for assassins. |
| Arquinsiel11-11-04, 08:25 AM | Well due to me killing the supplier and taking his stuff my DM ruled that the vial of black lotus in my possession may not actually be black lotus. After random rolls and an arbitrary decision to use the cursed item table he ended up making a potion of reverse-black lotus. That's right folks, pass your FORT save on contact or GAIN 3d6 CON. Then do it again one minute later (albeit it less likely to happen). Bearing in mind that black lotus is a contact poison all you had to do was touch a drop and it would work I was considering selling it to a neighbouring kingdom for several million gold so that they could raise a force of super-soldiers (without all that nasty monster creation) and retiring my character to a life of luxury but common sense prevailed and it was re-ruled to be a harmless if foul-smelling liquid of randomness. |
| algritz11-11-04, 02:55 PM | well, this didn't happenned while I was DMing but rather playing, but I found it quite good. My characther got interrogated by some guards (we ran into some of those guards before and our party was nearly killed, so beign alone this time, I couldn't force my way to freedom). They forced me to follow them in some sort of tent were "interrogation instrauments" were stocked on a table. Then a wizard comes in. Me trying to talk my way out : "Matron Jeakrynnaa, will make you pay for this you silly ..." (that matron was the head of the fourth house of the city, I used her name in order to put fear upon those guards and the wizard) The wizard : Oh shoot !!! You brought one of our agents !!!! Let him go !!! The leader of the guards : Hey he's lying, he's trying to save his butt, don't you see it ??? Wizard : We'll know soon enough... (he cast a "Detect lies" spell, roll my save and SR.... I fail.... I must tell the truth).... Wizard : So do you really work for Matron Jaekrynnaa ??? Me : Well, it's obvious, dont' you think ???? (what I really meant to him is that it was obvious that I'm not on of their agent, but simply didn't revealed that part of the sentence) The wizard (overconfident of the effectiveness of his spell) : You see, he's one of us, let him leave NOW !!!!! I had a great relief when I saw the other guard let me get out... I just saved my butt !!! |

| Pyre_8911-11-04, 06:43 PM | I was DMing some adventure from a dungeon (devil Box, I think), and part of it calls for them to convince the guy to let them buy, or borrow a Kobold from his freak-show. Seeing as they fail their diplomacy horribly, (plus my players like to do evil acts with neutral/good Characters), they decide to break in and try to steal it. So the guy walks in on them, sicks his cronies on them, and tries to kill them. well eventually they get pulled off to jail for breaking and entering. Well this has no story to it, so I had to try pull it off myself! I tried to improvise stats in my head, but it ended up the guards got their heads bashed in ( while the PC's are in the jail cell, may i add) and they escape to steal the kobold again. Luckily, they suceed this time, and continue on with the mission! :u:/:r: |
| Heroic_Saviour11-12-04, 02:42 PM | I Havnt really ever had to make much up on the spot. oh yeah, except one entire adventure (save a single wing-it) |
| Sulaco11-12-04, 02:53 PM | Have you, the DM, ever had to have been forced to make up something on the spot that went terribly wrong? No. Making things up on the spot is what being a good DM is all about. If you can't do this - and do it well - then you have no business behind the screen. |
| Heroic_Saviour11-12-04, 02:56 PM | your crazy |
