| Mcgarnagle06-21-06, 10:57 PM | This in the same vein as those other threads titled "1001...". For this thread, however, I'm thinking more along the lines of small events and situations that do not lead into adventures but create small situations for players to role play within. Often times it's the small things that create the nice role playing moments. Lets try to get as many as we can! 1. One member of the party strolls through town and sees a few small children crouched around in a small huddle. When the player approaches, they see that one small child cradels a bird in his cupped hands, it's wing is broken. |
| Darkxarth06-21-06, 11:09 PM | 2. While having a drink in a tavern, a man walks in. He approaches the party's Cleric or Paladin looking for marital advice. He believed his wife is seeing someone else, but he still loves her. 3. While walking through the marketplace, one of the party members is approached by a merchant who wishes to use the PC as an advertiser for his/her product. It could be weapons, armor, drink, etc. "Wow, this sword from Andy's Arsenal really improves my fighting abilities!" "Wow, this armor from Kilik's Kiosk has kept me safe from countless dangers!" "Wow, this ale from Tagert's Tavern is sure one delicious alcoholic beverage!" |
| Mcgarnagle06-21-06, 11:45 PM | 4. While camping on the side of the road, a messenger on horseback rides swiftly up to the camp. He has a message to deliver to the next town but asks the party if he may rest at their camp for a short time. 5. The sky becomes overcast as the players walk past a home with no roof. A man and his two sons work vigorously to get the sod roof in place. The man asks the players if they could lend a hand before the rain comes. He offers to feed them and give them shelter for the night. |
| Darkxarth06-22-06, 12:06 AM | You know, this is such a relief from the usual, "Epic Planet Destroyer Spell! or Killer Red Wyrm, From Outer Space!!! or One of my players wants to chop up the Gods and eat them as a sugary breakfast cereal, how can I do this?" ...whew... 6. On their way home from an exhausting adventure, the PCs run across a widow and her six small children. The widow is trying to pull a cart full of hay back to her village, while her children pick herbs along the roadside. All of them look half-starved and completely dead on their feet. (And no, I don't mean they're Undead, they're just very tired!) |
| Mcgarnagle06-22-06, 12:29 AM | 7. An annual festival in a small town pits townsfolks and anyone else for that matter in a duel. This duel is not with swords or magic however... it is a competition to see who can tell the most interesting and entertaining tale. The townsfolk coax the PCs into telling one of their own tales, true or otherwise. The winner is awarded a small, meager trophy made by the local smithy. 8. Player 1's sibling falls in love with Player 2. (whether this is a mutual love or one side depends on the player in question and how they want to play it out). Player 1 may be opposed to this love affair or perhaps he encourages it. Either way, both PCs will need to deal with the father who is Vehemently opposed to the love affair. It can even work better if the sibling and player 2 are of different races. It can bring more tension to the situation. |
| Darkxarth06-22-06, 01:01 AM | Similar to #8 9. The Ranger's or Druid's Animal Companion/Wizard's or Sorcerer's Familiar has mated with another animal, and the babies have been born. Right in the middle of the PCs campsite! (This works even better if two characters have similar pets, then they can mate with each other, assuming they're of opposite gender, of course.) 10. The Chieftan of the village the PCs just saved has passed away, of old age, he died a peaceful death in his sleep. Exactly one week after his death, the village intends to have an election for a new Chieftan. A few of the villagers wish for the PCs to stay for a while and vote in the election. 11. During one of the parties' downtimes, the city they're in is having a festival. An important NPC (whom the PCs have probably saved at one point or another) invites the PCs to set up small booths to sell trinkets, perform (juggling, weapon tricks, storytelling, music, etc.), or anything else within the rules of the festival. |
| Flushmaster06-22-06, 02:05 AM | 12: While the PCs are walking down any given street in a town or city, somebody in a hooded cloak approaches them. Just as the PCs are about to pass the individual, they throw back the hood and cloak, under which they are butt nekkid, and yell "Whoo!" before quickly closing the cloak, re-raising the hood, and running away down an alley. The age, gender, race, and attractiveness of the flasher is entirely up to the DM. 13: The events of #12 occur repeatedly. The PCs can eventually find out that today is an anual holidy in which townsfolk are encouraged to spend an hour flashing strangers. I'm not sure why they would have such a holiday at this moment, but I'm sure enterprising DMs could come up with one. 14: The PCs are invited to a large, formal ball. The catch is that all participants must be naked. Come up with a reason. Really, I have no idea why I'm thinking about nudity so much right now. It just occurred to me that it's been months since I mooned somebody. Maybe it's the codine in my pain meds for my broken leg just messing with my head... |
| shadowdra32106-22-06, 02:28 AM | 15. One of the PCs have a hart attack and need to be revived. |
| Majick06-22-06, 02:47 AM | 16. A messenger hurredly runs up to the PC's the instant they enter town, grabbing one of them by the arm and say "Your late your late! Come on, your gonna miss it! Hurry hurry!" (preferably a physically weaker character if a grapple check is neccassary :)) Then, the PC get's thrown on stage, mistaken for a famous musician, actor or singer XD good times 17. A child (an exceptional child, in terms of skills anyway) pickpockets one of the PC's and then runs off (spot checks and capture reveal that there is a massive street organisation of beggar children all who all live in an old abandonded church). 18. A new monument has been put in place in the center of town and the deal is that it's apparently a lucky charm of sorts, if you kiss it, it gives you luck for a day! If any PC kisses it, the statue a) comes to life b) falls to pieces c) becomes a real, whatever it is, instead of being made of stone d) make the PC make a Will save, if failed, the PC is under the control of a mischevious entity for the next 24 hours (unknown to the PC or the party) Lotsa fun to be had |
| Mcgarnagle06-22-06, 08:47 AM | 19. Walking past a lake, the PCs see a small boat over packed with all sorts of gear and equipment. As they walk past, the boat suddenly capsizes. They see an older man plunge into the water along with all the gear in the boat. He is in no real danger, as he swims to shore, cursing. If the players question him, he says that there is a fairly large fish that inhabits the lake and he has been trying to catch it for years. It always seems to evade him just at the right time. |
| KoronBlackwing06-22-06, 10:28 AM | 20. While in a tavern as normal sized house cat with a brilliant blue coat can be seen lazing on the bar. If the PCs interact with the cat in anyway it acts like a normal act except if they pet it for a while at which point when it has had enough it will look up at the PC and say "Thank you." in perfect common. The cat is an awakened formal familiar of a wizard. (The look on the PCs face should be priceless if they have never had an encounter with and awakened animal. My PCs spent hours (literaly) trying to figure this one out) |
| Herald@Large06-22-06, 03:33 PM | 21. An old woman's pet cat is stuck up in a tree; she begs the party to help get it down. Reward: a delicious home-cooked meal. 22. The local shepherd has had his prize ram wander away (or possibly stolen). Would the party ranger please track it down? Reward: a leg of lamb, or a nice woolly jacket. 23. Something nasty has invaded the village well! 24. Fire! One of the buildings in the village has caught fire! If the party joins the bucket brigade, they get free food and lodging for the night. If the party cleric or druid can summon rain or a water elemental or something like that, they get free food and lodging for a week. 25. Two young people are getting married but are too poor to hire a musician. Would the party bard please sing at the wedding? |
| Gulliver06-22-06, 04:27 PM | 26. A solar eclipse: there's talk of it coming for weeks, and your PCs will most likely assume it's going to be the time when something really awful happens, or it has some magical significance. In fact, it's just a chance for a big booze up and a party. |
| E. Ravenwood06-22-06, 07:57 PM | 27. Strange noises are coming from the nearby forest. Turns out it's just a bunch of dumb kids playing with bottles. |
| Mcgarnagle06-22-06, 09:25 PM | 28. A horse trainer is having difficulty training a horse. He tells the players that if they would like to try and break the horse, then they are welcome to try. However, he plans to put the untrainable animal down at the end of the week if no progress is made. 29. The players enter a town or city. in the town square, an execution is about to occur. It can be by hanging, beheading or any other way the GM decides. The GM can really make a lot of decisions with this one. He must decide if the crowd is solemn, loud and boisterous, perhaps some are sad while others are happy. There's lots of different moods that can be created with this event. |
| Darkxarth06-23-06, 12:50 AM | 30. As the players enter the forest, presumably to hunt down some creature or find the mayor's daughter, the one in front is caught in a net trap. As the other PCs try to free him/her/it, they are accosted by an angry Ogre. It claims that the PC is its meal, rightfully caught and now the Ogre's property. If the PCs attack, which they probably will, their attacks go right through. As soon as they attack, a Hill Giant comes up behind them and says, "Me eat you!" Once again, the PCs attacks go right through. When they turn around, the Ogre is gone. In his place is a Gnome, "Don't worry about the Ogre, I took care of it. And that Giant." As the PCs turn around again, the Hill Giant is gone, replaced by a small toad. "You see, I am a very powerful mage." As soon as the words leave his mouth, the PCs hear another sound, "No he's not, I am!" The toad behind them has also become a Gnome. It turns out, it is a Gnomish holiday, in which Gnomes must play illusion tricks on everyon they see. Whew... what a mouthful. |
| KingMerv0206-23-06, 10:46 AM | 31. The local guild has learned that one of its accountants is skimming off the top. The guild doesn't want the bad publicity of a public arrest and refuse to go to the cops. They ask the PC's to get the money back. (Stealth, diplomacy, or intimidation encouraged.) Their reward is a "guild favor". The longer they wait to cash in their favor, the more it is worth. |
| Darkxarth06-23-06, 11:07 AM | 32. As the PCs wander through the streets, a man approahes them. He is holding a clipboard and a pen. He stops the PCs and wonders if he can ask them a few questions. He asks about their place of birth, their family, pets, and other general questions. At the end of the survey, he thanks them for their time. (This is a good point to let the PCs develop their character. The DM should create a whole list of questions, depending on what he knows about the characters, and what he might need to know in the future. Alternatively, the DM could print out questionairres, and have the NPC hand them out to the PCs and ask them to fill them out, while the players fill out the real-life sheets.) |
| TheSkinnySkeleton06-25-06, 03:58 AM | This is great! I am totally using these in the future. Getting bored of the old hack and slash. :) 33. In town, a young child runs up to one of the PCs and says he wants to tell the PC a secret. The child is very adamant about keeping it secret, however. If the PC accepts, the child makes him promise to not tell anybody. Then he asks for a pinky swear. And a solemn oath. And *insert more childish secretive stuff*. Then, when the kid finally trusts the PC to keep the secret, the kid whispers to the PC, "I have a gold piece! A REAL gold piece!" 34. While the PCs are walking through a residential district, they come upon a small streetfight. Two middle-aged commoner women are duking it out in the middle of the street. A middle-aged man is lying by the side of the road, holding his stomach with a pained expression on his face. A wailing toddler and a sniffling 6-year-old sit beside him. As the PCs approach the scene, they are asked by a gang of teenagers if they want to "place any bets." Turns out the one of the fighting women had slept with the other woman's husband, and things got ugly. 35. On the outskirts of town, the PCs find a very worried-looking teenage kid. The lad is a wizard's apprentice. He lost his material component pouch when he was out looking for components in the nearby woods, and asks the PCs if they can help him look for it. If he doesn't find his pouch by dinnertime, his master will punish him severely. |
| metamind06-25-06, 02:38 PM | 36: The first thing the PCs see when they enter the village tavern is a decapitaded body, and a hulking half-orc pinning a young elf to the wall, screaming in the orc tongue to someone outside (the PCs may think it is the Half-orcs minions). What will the PCs do? Attack him! Once the orc is on the verge of death, the town guards burst through the doors, and arrest... The PCs! It turns out that the elf was wanted for the murder of several people (hence the body), and the orc has being a good citizen, and holding back the elf until the authorities showed up. The look on thier faces will be priceless! :D |
| FallenWyvern06-26-06, 02:24 PM | Just a few of my suggestions : 37. A grey render impresses upon a child in town (who stumbled across it's den, the mother render murdered while away). The town now has some major moral problems! 38. While walking through town the pc's hear a racket and turn to see an out of control carriage or cart rushing towards them. 39. After a successful adventure, a single pc finds him or herself surrounded by the towns children, wanting to be hero's themselves. They never leave him or her and are always bothering them to teach them hero stuff. (Alternatively, replace children with halflings, and make it the whole town, just for fun ;) 40. A noble invites the pc's to go hunt game in a private forest. 41. A church bake sale has to be quickly brought inside the temple, as thunder clouds loom. 42. A farmer needs help farming the rest of his cabbage, trying to gather as much as his old back can carry before the frost bites his crops. Edit : 43. A half-orc woman tries to use stregth and grappling to really show a pc a good time... even if they don't want to. |
| SeptimusMagistos07-16-06, 10:31 PM | 44. If the PCs are at least 5th level. A peasant runs up to them and speaks of great evil and an undead hord coming to kill them all. In reality it's nothing more than a single skeleton in his basement. |
