| Luke24749412-10-07, 07:21 PM | I have no particular anecdotes but thought that this would be an amusing thread :D |
| PualTheNinja12-10-07, 11:57 PM | I'm taking this from Dane Cook and adding a D&D theme. Jumping in to a pond that has its surface covered in oil and a dragon breaths fire on it, and the only safe spot to jump out of the dragon is there ready to hit you back into the water or just eat you. you decide how you want to die by water, flames, or dragon. |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s012-11-07, 12:06 AM | Backside rapage... by ogres... female ogres. |
| Fleck12-11-07, 07:33 AM | For 1st level characters? Being scratched to death by a cute little kitten. :( |
| Mortagon12-11-07, 08:14 AM | An epic barbarian in my campaign got run over by a juggernaut then grinded into the party clerics blade barrier spell. He survived all this, but was so low on hit points that he was killed by a bugbear (this was a 22nd level barbarian). |
| Phrennzy12-11-07, 09:07 AM | Killed by the calzone golem in the short (and very good) adventure, "What's cooking?" Almost happened in our game. |
| Hsien12-11-07, 09:51 AM | 6. Trapped at the bottom of a Hill Giant's Privy..and it's beans and burrito night. ( shudders ) This was our "The Pit of Despair" before Princess Bride came out. |
| theblackpiece12-11-07, 12:03 PM | 7. my friend was playing a hill giant, and i was a rogue. I tried to hide in his footprint where he had already stepped, because there was like a goblin camp or something there, and he ended up stepping on me.... |
| MasterBlaster12-11-07, 12:12 PM | I have a very nearly almost died story. The party wizard is an elf. Being an elf, he feels it his duty to wield a longsword. Wielding a longsword makes him feel like a fighter. So he boldly charges a tendricolos. Had the party druid (famous for being late) not walked through the door when he did, the wizard would be very very dead. |
| Hsien12-11-07, 12:30 PM | 8: ( similar to 7. and happened to my bud ) Rogue hiding in the fog, got stepped on by a couple of Fog Giants, that were running away from something. They didn't even slow down to scrap rogue stuff off their boots. |
| Seraphex12-11-07, 01:43 PM | As a lvl 6 rogue, after having killed 4 ECL 8 Ogre barbarians without taking a lot of damage, being killed in one blow by a lvl 3 fighter, who threw a natural 20 on a x4 weapon and throwing max damage -.-. |
| Mad_Jack12-11-07, 02:17 PM | Setting up nearly a dozen clever traps on a path, then luring half a dozen trolls to the location, where my nimble rogue promptly rolled a 1 on a jump check to clear the first trap, was knocked off his feet by the tripping branch that swung out, and stumbled into the pit of spikes. Silverrain, my first real D&D character, from back in the day when "elf" was a class, walked into a room and saw an ogre. My response... "I cast magic missile..." |
| Shiftkitty12-11-07, 03:12 PM | NPC Cultist died from being slapped on the back by an elf. He was down to one point, and he and the elf had taken cover to hide from the PC wizard, who was in an insane rage over some insult the elf had hit him with during the fight. The cultist popped up and lobbed a mace at the wizard, hitting him square in the 'nads, dropping the wizard to his knees. The elf, a fighter whom the player had decided was into weight lifting and thus had a hefty STR score (no racial limits, remember those?), was declared by the player to "enthusiastically" slap the cultist on the back while saying "good shot!" His slaps were the equivalent of a normal person's punch. did the full 3 points of damage plus STR bonus. Woops. |
| HernetheHunter12-11-07, 03:13 PM | A friends Dwarf Fighter tricked into charging into an unscouted room... right into a gelatinous cube. (2E) |
| HernetheHunter12-11-07, 03:18 PM | Same Dwarf Fighter after being ressurrected, same dungeon. Found a dusty sarcophagus against a wall and decided that the reason items were disappearing was due to it being a teleportation device after other PCs pointed out the growing pile of dust at the bottom... |
| Fenrir_Greyback12-11-07, 03:21 PM | By getting beaten to death in your sleep by two female gnome bards. This is probably going to happen to my 6th lvl rouge, and the two bards are third lvl or something of the like. I'm currently sleeping with one eye open. |
| tharivol26612-11-07, 04:10 PM | bullrushing a mindflayer off a cliff and forgetting about 1 mindflayers' levitation and 2 that you lent the ring of featherfall to someone else |
| Seeker9512-11-07, 05:08 PM | D&D? Old age. |
| Sinfire Titan12-11-07, 07:35 PM | Snake Napalm. An adamantine Warforged Paladin decided to try and steamroll a snake swarm. The party wizard decided to spill said Warforged's lantern by throwing it on the swarm. He then cast Flare. I got set on fire, the snakes burned alive, and me with them. Only two months after that happened, did I reread the Flare spell. It doesn't give off heat. :weep: |
| theblackpiece12-11-07, 07:44 PM | Rope Burns. once we were playing with an evil DM and he somehow captured my friend and tied him to a tree (i think goblins did it) and my friend was level one. so he gets free, but the Dm decided that the player got rope burns that did d12 damage. he died. |
| Guardian112-11-07, 08:47 PM | Swallowed alive by a dire bear. The story behind this is what makes it so pitiful. I was running a VoP monk who had the opportunity to obtain a non-magical dagger the last time our characters were in town. I decided not to, on the grounds that if we get into a situation where I require a dagger, we're already screwed. Anyway, one of the party members had aquirred a scroll of Leomund's Secure Shelter, and as the rest of the party members needed to sleep, I was put on watch for the whole night (Yay for Greater Sustenance). We set up camp just outside of a cave, and during the night, the dire bear who inhabited the cave came down to investigate. We ended up fighting it, and in the course of combat, I ended up using my own healing ability, getting hit by the bear, getting grabbed by the bear, and eventually getting swallowed. The only way I could escape was to use the crossbow bolts my character had to cut through the stomach. Didn't quite work out the way I hoped. Eight rounds of slowly dissolving in the bear's stomach acid later, my monk was, as John Cleese in the Monty Python "Dead Parrot" skit would say, "No more! He has ceased to be!" First, and potentially the last, time I ever play a VoP monk. However, I will never underestimate them. |
| Bloodsoul12-11-07, 09:33 PM | Most embarrassing death I can remember? Played a Barbarian who was trapped in an illusionary world with our party. Only way out was by simply touching a map. Instead, he burned it. |
| Zousha_Omenohu12-11-07, 10:06 PM | Being hurled from a horse, causing you to get impaled on a bunch of goblin spears, and then getting stepped on by a great wyrm red dragon. This actually happened to me once! |
| Guderian12-11-07, 11:26 PM | In our games, we have Death by Chad's Curse. Basically, whenever Chad's PrC rushes headlong into combat (irrespective of what he is playing)..... the monk in the party gets nuked. Sometimes, a lot of others gets hammered. When he played a rogue, he would be in the thick of the fighting. The first time, the monk got into neg. hp, the second time he died altogether (but got rezzed back). The current campaign, he is a necromancer who still rushes into melee combat. The first day, my monk PC failed every poison save he had to make. The second day, our level 3 party was dumb enough to fight a Barbazu (I blame the Knight). I was still failing poison saves, and at the end of the fight(which we survived by 3 players critting in a row, and a horrible save throw on the GM's part) half the party was in neg. hp. Chad's necro was at full health. The next day, he was the first person to jump aboard a heavily armed ship with several higher-level spellcasters, and followed this up by walking into a room containing an invisible ECL 8 Rogue/Assassin. It was my monk who got hit by assassin's Sassone Leaf Extract, and our fighter who ate multiple Scorching Rays. |
| Silversheen19712-11-07, 11:46 PM | This is still my favorite character death of all time: I'm the rogue, and we come to a hallway. Twenty feet long, and ten of those feet is taken by a pit that's ten feet deep. The pit is not concealed in any way. We obviously don't trust it, so we take measures to get across without risking falling in. We make it across, and, as the rogue, it's my job to check for traps. Okay, Search check...nat 1. Hmmm... As I touch the door, I'm teleported to the bottom of the pit, and fire sring to life inside. I can't make a Reflex save because I've got nowhere to reflex to, so I just take the full 1d6 damage (we were level 14). Oh, boy, 1d6 damage. Oh noes. 6 fire damage huh? Okay, well that's not too... ... ... ... ... I'm wearing a full, type VI necklace of fireballs...54d6 you say...Oh, what's that, Mr. DM Man? The random staff we found and that the party pawned off to me was a fully charged staff of the magi? Okay... Basically what the party saw was: Rogue touches door and disappears. Then, after a pause which lets the barbarian ask "where rogue go?" a nuclear explosion goes off in the pit behind us. The barbarian's response to this? "Oh, there rogue." |
| lonewolf633912-17-07, 11:25 AM | Okay the situation was an evil campaign. The party was as follows: 4th level Mindflayer wizard 4th level Minotaur fighter 4th level Drow ranger 4th level Half-fiend (human base race) rouge The encounter was a group of Would-be-heroes 4th level human bard 4th level human rouge 4th level human fighter 4th level human archer The mindflayer decides it would be smart to cast disguise self, pretend he was an old man that was taken hostage by the evil group, and exercise his ability to cast exploding runes by using it on a scroll he pretended was a map and handed it to the bard who was the would-be-heroes leader. Normally this would be a good idea, but they were in a cramped dungeon hallway... Needless to say, he was the fight ender. The only person to survive was the human archer because he was down the tunnel aways. As a side note, he was the only cause of player death in that campaign. He hated me every time I mentioned exploding runes for such a long time afterwards that I had to keep mentioning it. |
| Druid_Skara12-17-07, 01:45 PM | I would say death by hemorrhoids would be damn embarrassing. |
| Crebain02-12-08, 10:08 PM | How awesome would it be if one of the diseases in dnd was severe dysentary. |
| Aamaxu02-21-08, 02:05 PM | We started our dark toned (like the game Witcher) campaign, my friend playing a human fighter with WIS 3 (no kid, 4d6 ignore lowest and he got 1, 1, 1, 1). So he was in a tavern when this commoner started intimidating him. With a WIS 3 and a full tavern, the player pulled out his sword and intimidated back --> rolled a natural 1 Mad, the commoner attacked him with a dagger (mind you I rolled these rolls in front of the players) -> a natural 20 (okay, check for critical) -> a natural 20 (oookay, check for instant kill) at this point the players were like :uh-huh: -> 18 Whoops, the first single fight against a commoner and the lvl 1 character died! Now we were all going:rofl: |
| sakuradm02-29-08, 07:14 PM | i was shot in the backside when i was a level 1, i ripped the arrow out, causing me to lose a third of my hp, an orc speared my shoulder, and pulled it out, and the group didn't like me b/c i was rich, so when the cleric grabbed me to cast a heal spell,i jerked away, and the others ganged up and finished me off... i later learned that tommy (our cleric) was wanting to heal me, not hold me down... Now i is a dungeon master and my characters are Really good and stong.. :evillaugh: |
| Shadowshimmer02-29-08, 07:18 PM | Being a test subject for a Gnome invention. |
| sakuradm02-29-08, 07:39 PM | Crossing an archery range... *sigh* Matty, how dumb ARE you??? |
| PeaceReaper02-29-08, 08:52 PM | Being eaten by a Gelatinous Cube. This happened to one of my players, and he never trusted his meals at the inn again. DM: As you sit at the table discussing your plans, the waitress brings you breakfast: eggs and bacon. Player: I search the eggs for any sign of movement. Dm: (Grumbles) No, no movement. Player: What about the bacon? |
| Catwhoplaysguitar03-01-08, 10:22 AM | Whilst my character was not the one who died, she did hae involvement in another characters death, via the paladin. (This was a friends homebrew world) Basically - we were fighting Gods, these gods had just tricked us into running round the world for ages for no apparant reason. So amongst the Gods present, was the one the Paladin worshiped. However before the party started talking to him, Simon (the paladin) decided to challenege the CE God of Chaos, evil, destruction and good fashion to a fair fight  As a result he dies. Whilst he was fighting, the rest of the party had managed to discorperate the Paladin's God. My Cleric (Vow of Peace, walking first aid kit etc etc) saw this and Simon being killed ala vorpal fist. I then gated his body away and used the (nearly empty) rod of ressurection. When Simon woke up, I told him what had happened. He then gates back to the fight - and the first party member he comes across is the warlock . . . 2 natural 20's later the warlock is now in two distinct piece (scythe + str mod insane will do that on a crit) The Paladin then resumes the fair fight (and dies again) |
| Sathyllin03-01-08, 04:09 PM | This is still my favorite character death of all time: I'm the rogue, and we come to a hallway. | vardock03-02-08, 06:14 PM | In a second edition game, my dwarf fighter rand directly into a mirror thinking it was a portal into another plane to rescue a maiden thrown into it. It turned out to be a "Mirror of Oblivion". |
| hrpatton03-02-08, 07:06 PM | The sad and lonely death of Bradford the thief. The year was 1980 or so, and my best friend and I were playing our very first game of D&D with the Basic Set. I'd read most of the rules, so I was the DM, and he was Carlos the Fighter. I'd given him maximum gold -- my first fudged roll as a DM! -- and he bought damned near everything in the equipment list, including some stuff we couldn't identify. We were pretty sure a "pole arm" was a long pole with a hand on the end, used for picking up treasure at a distance. Anyway, I created an NPC thief to be Carlos's henchman. The rules said something about a thief being "essential" to a party, and I'd taken them a bit too literally. We dubbed this morally dodgy fellow "Bradford" after a school bully neither of us liked. Carlos and Bradford marched to their first dungeon, a two-level keep of which I was inordinately proud. It was the typical first-timer's mish-mash of random monsters, illogical constructions and sadistic deathtraps. The first of the last of these was a 10' deep pit in the front courtyard. The doughty adventurers were halfway across the courtyard before I remembered the trap. Trying to sound casual, I asked "Which one of you is in front?" My friend, already displaying a nascent gamer's paranoia, of course replied "Bradford." You can guess the rest. I rolled a '6' for falling damage (legitimately, I swear) and poor Bradford breathed his last at the bottom of a dark but curiously perfectly square hole in the ground. My friend and I laughed for an hour. Bradford remains to this day the shortest-lived character in any campaign I've ever played. His brief existence spanned barely two minutes from "OK, let's start!" to "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" |
| Shadowshimmer03-03-08, 11:50 AM | When the Halfling Rogue jumped into the mouth of a gargoyle to hide and there was a Sphere of annihilation in the mouth. |
| Shiftkitty03-03-08, 03:08 PM | For some reason that reminded me of when Eddy, our hamster, escaped. My husband and I were chasing this little idiot all around the room. Finally, my husband gets the idea to put the hamster ball on the floor. As far as Eddy was concerned, hamster ball=freedom. So, in he hops! You could almost see him smacking his little paw against his forehead as the hatch clicked shut.:banghead: Sorry to go OT. I could just imagine this halfling doing the same sort of thing Eddy did, laughing as he makes his "final escape". |
| LivingShadow03-03-08, 05:38 PM | When the Halfling Rogue jumped into the mouth of a gargoyle to hide and there was a Sphere of annihilation in the mouth. Tomb of Horrors right? Our party barbarian once charged a hydra, needless to say it didn't end well. |
| Shadowshimmer03-04-08, 07:21 AM | "Tomb of Horrors, right?" That is correct. |
| celestialkin03-04-08, 07:29 AM | Being a halfling with a high Cha and a thing for Orc/Half-Orc women. However, death by smoo smoo is a hell of a way to go. :D |
| Mortisum03-04-08, 10:24 AM | i have two really embarassing ways to die. okay party was riding on a earth elemental drivin train. Train got derailed by goblins and the elementals got loose. well after killing the goblins i being a cocky changling ninja got the bright idea of taking on the elementals. they were only smal right and there was only four right. yea well needless to say i forgot most of the party decided to book it. and worse yet this one guy was just gonna read a book. read a book in game. any who i roll a 2. yea i felt really strong now. needless to say after all four swing at me and 17 damage later im dead. but that not the end of it. the guy who just sat there and read a book decided hey screw him im gonna loot hit body. four attacks later he died too. we were level 1. last time i play unmedicated. the other one is how somone who played in my game died. it was an average dungeon crawl with the average party make up. except there were two rogues both working to dismantle all my traps. my players know i love to make traps that set off more traps to lead to doom so the rogues worked their hardest to find every possible trap they could find. then they came to a door. one of them was smart and put a cloth on his hand before he opened the door. no poison for him. but they forgot to search the door they just assumed it was poison and this was my most elaborate "mouse trap" trap. they passed the poisoned door nob on to set of the blunt pendulim over the door which bullrushed and smashed the rogue through the door which then set off the poisoned arrow fusilage on the opposing wall which hit him for 5d6 and because of the successful bullrush he went in far enough to land on the 10ft wide and 20ft deep spiked pit trap which at the bottom of that had a reverse gravity trap that sent you flying to the stalagties on the ceiling. my favorite trap ever. |
| ravenshrike03-04-08, 02:36 PM | Teacup. Had a Monk/Drunken Master who pulled this one off on the BBEG of a short campaign. |
| cacheek03-26-08, 06:25 PM | My nephew gets polymorphed into a chicken. My brother-in-law ties a rope to the chicken to serve as a leash. The party walks into a massive room full of sand to find two purple worms. They eat my nephew, who gets pulled out by the rope into mid-air, eaten by the other worm, repeat until dead. |
| Renown003-26-08, 09:44 PM | Alright. In my very first campaign, in the second room, the fighter dies despite having four potions of cure light wounds. To make it humiliating, the only other party member at the time, the wizard, runs out of spells, and totally destroys the next three monsters with only her quarterstaff. Since it was my first campaign, and his first time playing, I thought up some obscure way to rez him, and he did. About three rooms later, an underpowered, MOAJOR weakling of a blue dragon takes the fighter back down to the negs again with its bite attack. By now, they had both recruited a cleric and a rogue. The fighter controlled the cleric, and the wizard controlled the rogue. Instead of having the cleric go help the fighter, the cleric screams bloody murder of revenge on Pelor's name, and swings his hammer, and hits the dragon. Since the cleric was surprisingly larger than the fighter, and the rogue was hinding behind him, the dragon takes aim and annihilates both the cleric and the rogue in one breath attack. The wizard then humiliates them all by casting Magic Missle and taking the dragon out. I rezzed them all... again. So, as they enter an inn to wait for the next campaign, the fighter does a search check before he goes in and sees a bag of gold. He bends down to pick it up and the rogue opens the door on his head. He took 6 damage. Then, once he was drunk, he jumped off a table (can't remember why he got on), and apparently landed on the back of his head and snapped his neck. I just had him make a whole new character that time. |
| Kallionastiryne04-01-08, 10:27 AM | This wasn't a death for my character, it was the death of the wizard in our party: He was a Level 10 Human wizard. Three challenge rating one drows attacked him and well... they used sleeping poison on him, then performed a coup de gra. My character had to pay for part of the true resurection. |
| Arymetore04-01-08, 04:45 PM | I probably shouldn't post this... As a medium level character and with pretty much full health, at the start of a dungeon crawl, we were looking for the entrance to where we were planning to go. There was a ruined wall surrounding the interior buildings (such as there were of them). Finding a gate, my character attempts to kick it in (Its an old ruined gate right?). Critical fumble... DM determines my character has fractured his leg and goes unconscious. He ends up bleeding to death as the two (perhaps three) characters in the rest of the group with either healing skills or healing magic stand around discussing other issues, totally forgetting about my character literally lying at their feet, unconscious and with at minumum a broken leg. It was then pointed out that there were several large gaps in the wall that could simply be walked through and the gate could be bypassed... |
| pintslayer04-01-08, 08:18 PM | Getting beaten in hand-to-hand combat by a guy that looks like the bard in the 2E Player's handbook. I mean, his boots don't even match... |
| Shadowshimmer04-02-08, 02:49 PM | Didn't happen to me but a friend of mine. He was really low on hit points so he had is Elf Rogue pretend he was dead and he laid down in the middle of this courtyard. He did not account for the portcullis being ripped out of the wall by the Ogre's and having it slamed on him and everyone else in the courtyard. |
| Bladechief1704-02-08, 10:50 PM | How embarrasing is dying because you put your foot in hell and then you manage to get a new foot made of light but your friends want your foot to make themselves daggers of light, so they drown you and cut off your foot? He screwed up so bad that by the time we decided to kill him he could only cast the spell light... Man that was so funny... for me at least :D . |
| DungeonOverlord04-03-08, 08:38 AM | This happened to a player in my campaign: They were fighting a wizard and some minions when the rogue (who's deaf due to previous spell) decides to leap ahead of the minions and attack the wizard, while he arrives the wizard casts power word blind and then throws up a wall of force. The mage noticed the wall of force (spellcraft when it was casted) and "helped" the rogue by casting quicken spectral hand and then dimension door on the rogue to the other side. While no sound can pass through the wall of force, so the rogue feels a tingly sensation and then the sounds of battle fade. So he stands there deaf and blind wondering if he's died and gone to Valhalla, while the mage extends his arm and charges up the meanest, you're screwed spell he could muster. Another in mine: Three characters stand at a door in a dungeon. A rogue, a fighter and a cleric. The rogue walks up to check for traps...rolls 1...the trap goes off by surrounding him with walls of force... ...Then noxious gas fills the space he's in with poison...fort save...rolls 3...ok 3d6 con dmg...15...you have 1 con...then the door opens and giant black tentacles shoot out and grab the rogue, pulling him into the room. All the while the other two characters stand there with looks of 'wtf just happened' on their faces. ...The door closes and the gas clears, the wall of force dissapears. Fighter: "Huh..." walks up to the door cautiously to see if he can help his friend who's now trapped in some nightmarish dimension...repeat above. The cleric ended up turning face and left after the two characters died and found some other heroes to help brave the dungeon. |
