Probably already done, but whatever.
What I want here, is funny sounding names that appeared in your games. This could have been a PC, a NPC or anything, but it was in the game.
By the way, abusive names are not funny.

Smashface Facesmasher

This is funny :D

OK, I'll start:

#1. A halfling named Damndirty Smartypants. The player had hard time choosing a name, so I just wrote this one to make him think faster. He loved it :P
DX2052

#2, Pun-Pun.

Im thinking of using this name.

Billy-Bob Thornton.

Oh, no wait :thinks:

Seriously though, here's a small list of funny characters I've played.

Crackus McJunkie - Dwarven 'herbalist/apothacare'

Clump - Halfling fighter

Hu-Flung Dung - Human Monk

Stella Artois - D20 modern secret agent (we all named ourselves after alcoholic beverages - Jonny Walker, Tia Maria, Jack Daniels, Diamond White - led of course by the one and only, Captain Morgan!)

Luke Skyscraper - kinda self explainitory (Had a bot too, instead of R2D2 it was just 2RD, pronounced turd)

Jesus on Drums, Buddah on Bass, Ghandi on Guitar & Moses on the Mic - AKA 'The Lost Prophets'

I'm sure there was more.... I try to remember them.

07-12-07, 02:13 PM
Here's the name of the Lawful Good rogue who, when he joined our party announced that his name was: Justin ... Justin Timberlake.

The rest of us just about died laughing. It was even funnier because the guy who had named him that wasn't really aware of who Justin Timberlake is, just that he'd heard the name from somewhere but it still fit into a fantasy setting so he went with it.

In the "Desperadoes" Wild West RPG one character messed up on one letter, ONE LETTER!, and instead of a bandito named El Guapo*", he got "El Guano".

*He liked the character from "The Three Amigos".
DraconsNighthawk

07-12-07, 04:00 PM
We had one player tell us that since his character was a elf, he had a elf name, and thus was not proucable by the human tongue. It was spelted Sinhina (With lots of little dots on top of the letters). He'd get angry when we nicknamed him Sin, or the Elf who cannot be named, or something to those effects.

Sad thing was, Sin fit his character rather well.

This one isn't really ridiculous....but I still am in love with it, he is an npc bard who, for perfrom(dance) raver-dances with a whip that has light cast upon it.

What language?

OT, has anybody tried this? When someone asks where you're from, give a fantasy location. Someone asked me at a party once and I answered "Honalee". They thought I said Honolulu, then someone else corrected them and I thought I'd been caught. They then added "I think it's in New Mexico, isn't it?" I went with it! Egad! Like nobody'd ever heard of Puff the Magic Dragon! So now that's my hometown, while my husband claims to be from Waterdeep, New York. :D It's how we ferret out gamers...

I can't take credit for the name, it actually comes from Michael Moorcock's The Vanishing Tower (4th in the Elric series), but I had a savage druid PC named Voilodion Ghagnasdiak.

He was killed by the party...in the first encounter of the night...the night I rolled him up.

Addendum: Voilodion Ghagnasdiak also appears in one of the Corum books by Michael Moorcock.

Some of my more silly names...

Earwig Nosepicker (a kender)

Alialanaladasaldebacc

Cyrano de Vianetti de la Fortaleza de los Legumbres en la Mesa del Sur XXIII (a Savage Coast swashbucker, translates roughly as "Cyrano of the house of Vianetti of the fortress of vegetables in the house of the south, the twenty-third").
foxtail

07-13-07, 01:51 PM
I didn't realize the significance of the name until the other players pointed it out, but I had a halfling swordsage called Herrican Half-fast (say the last name out loud).

Also, I had a monkey-gripping, greatsword-wielding half-giant (before I knew that combo didn't work) named Cleftin Twain.

Best one so far, IMO :D

My two favorites:

In a gestalt Worlds Largest Dungeon I play a multiclassed fighter/rogue/scout/swashbuckler. Called him Frogue ScoutBuckler.

My ex made an elf character with a severe speech impediment. She named her elf Mesothelioma.

I love D&D.

We have an NPC wizard in our campaign called "Aeiou". It's pronounced like "Hey, you" without the 'h'. I also ran a one shot deal with a guest player, my neighbor's visiting nephew who sat in for a round while the adults next door discussed stuff utterly boring for a 14 year old. He played a hyperactive barbarian warrior named "Red Bull". He was actually a pretty kickass character, complete with this really cool magical raven companion, and the bird would fly to attack when the barbaraian released him, saying (you guessed it) "Red Bull gives you wings!"

I have a Halfling Ranger\Barbarian (favoured enemy Giants) in spiked armour called Bindi Underfoot. She travels with her brothers who have a similar styled armour and they are called Burr and Caltrop Underfoot. They specalised in fighting a giant threat to their homeland.

Some PC names I've had:
- Olliver Clothesoff (2e Masque of the Red Death mystic)
- Austin Tascious (named for his gaudy stats after rolling 4d6 in front of the DM and ending up with 17, 16, 16, 15, 14, 12. I almost named him Galactus Q. Splatterfoe just to annoy the already incredulous DM)
- Sturman Drang (human fighter)
- Stratocaster (a bard, naturally! At one point he had NPC followers named Les Paul, Rick Enbacker, and Marshall Stax.)

Some comic-relief type NPCs from the campaigns I've run:
- Jimmy The Scumbag (thieves' guild contact)
- Tarquin Lin-tin-bin-bim-lim-bin-bim-bin-bim bus stop P'tang P'tang Olé Biscuitbarrel (Silly Party. We called him Lintinbin for short, as he actually became a semi-major recurring NPC.)

One of my campaigns had an organization of mercantile companies called the Brotherhood of Imperial Trading and Commerce Houses, or B.I.T.C.H. for short.

But does he have a brother called Telecaster?

Actually, in his backstory he did...and of course his father was Leo Fender. I suppose if I were to play the character today he'd be questing for the Pick of Destiny.

This is a hilarious thread, keep it coming, folks!!! Great stuff!

I don't have any cool names, but I distinctly remember a game with my old GM - he was always very well prepared, except for names, and when it got to inventing a name of unplanned NPCs, he always let his gaze go around, so we had a lot of Johnny Walkers, Gin Tonics, Jims and what-not.

At one point, one of the PCs was about to take over a certain secret service, and his first-in-command had not been named yet (he had many many people working for him in said secret service). His gaze wandered and halted on a video with a certain emblem on its side, and he continued: "...he calls himself Warner..."

At that point, the player blurted out: "Of course, and the others are his Brothers, right?"

Needless to say, we were all gasping for air a few minutes later ;)

The same exact thing would happen to me when I DM'ed this one campaign, so we ended up with NPCs named Jax Bachman (after the bag of pretzels on the table), LaBatt (beer bottle), Ginseg (spice bottle), and Glen Livet (scotch).

For some reason, the players always wanted to know the names of town guards, so they usually ended up being named for TV-show cops...we had Briscoe & Logan, Banachek, Starsky, Hutch, Matlock, Sipowitcz...and the Captain of the City Watch, Barney Miller.....

OMG, yes! You have all these wonderful, exotic names that really transport you to another world, and then they drop in a standard, Earth name, usually of Hebrew origin, such as "John", "Benjamin", "Sarah", etc. I wasn't aware that one of the tribes of Israel settled in Faerun.

I pat myself on the back for trying to keep the names in my campaign exotic. It's not hard to do. Take a standard Earth name and change one letter, and add a vowel on either end if you like. Using that formula, my real name, Lora, becomes Elonae. One of my players, Mark, became Amaro.

On a similar note, though, kudos to my players when, as a major monster surprised the party, one player shouted out "JESUS CHRIST!" and the others responded with things like "Who?" or "Is THAT what it's called!" Yes, somewhere in my world is a still-surviving demon known as "Jesus Christ". That's gonna make a trip to 21st century earth really interesting. ROFL. I haven't watched that skit in ages. I love Monty Python.

Nessal, Tremere, and Fled are all character names from people I've gamed with over the years. My own contributions include such gems as Darjeeling, February and Kukicha.

When it comes time to name NPCs, I have an easy, cheaty way of doing so. I write down every ordinary or real-life name I can think of on paper, and cut them apart at the syllable separations. These I separate into a first-syllable pile, a second-syllable pile, and so on. Then I draw from the piles randomly when making up names. Very handy, if you overlook the occasional aberration.

My main problem with $alvatore's naming is the overuse of apostrophes.
Gygax didn't even have that much initiative, he just reworked place names from Ireland and Britain and a lot of character names were just anagrams of his, family and friends names.

Actual names from a troop of 1st level evil characters that were meant to invade the Keep on the Borderlands:

Grab em n jab em
Clob em n rob em
Rape em n scr*** em
Porky (female half-orc, Cha of 4)

There were a few more but I can't recall, might have been a Pick em n flick em in there somewhere.

They all died.

Dia-look (spell it backwards)

The guy doing this one is now contemplating a "red war-forged, with a handle on one side and a smiley face on its belly. It will specialize in Bull Rush and try to burst through walls. It's battle cry will be, 'Oh, Yeah!!!'."

This is his description. I said if he does that he should have the warforged filled with potions of repair light damage.

Knowing this guy he will name the warforged Nam Dia-look. (Again spell it backwards.)

Gygax didn't even have that much initiative, he just reworked place names from Ireland and Britain and a lot of character names were just anagrams of his, family and friends names.

I've used Terran place names when it was logical, such as when places are named for nearby prominent features or other such things as Cottonwood, Waterford, Half Moon Bay, etc. The only town I lifted without such a benefit, however, was part of an in-joke reference to a murky little mudpit of a town near my hometown of San Jose. It's called Alviso, and the only purpose of this piece of land seemed to be to collect mud and sludge from waterways that extended to the San Francisco Bay. It was hastily built landfill to hold trailers for veterans returning from WW2, never meant to be a permanent settlement, but it became so. It floods regularly, so naturally a few years ago they built a business park there without asking why so many of the permanent residents have rowboats. You can guess what happened next. Anyway, Alviso is a major trading port in my campaign and is known for it's fine restaurants and many entertainment venues. It also floods like crazy, so for about half the year it's alot like Venice in Italy.

Salvatore's fondness for apostrophes trips me up at times. Is it meant to be a glottoral stop? An accent mark? Are there any pronunciation guides for these names?

That's from Discworld. Funny fella.

I'm so relieved that my players do not attend these boards, so I can give you a name that has yet to appear in my campaign.

A gnome necromancer was going to be called Sinney Easter, but I've checked that, apparently, gnomes love names and nicknames, and must have a dozen of them.
Fear Sinney Vlad Mancer Gaudi Nomicon Marquise Belkar Sidious Richard 'Grim' Easter, the gnome necromancer who, while being evil, hates the 'necromancers are evil' stereotype and gives a scroll with Explosive Runes to anyone that says so! :evillaugh His hobby is plotting how to overthrow Vecna. :plotting:

you mean like "Zagyg" and "Garyx", right? I'm glad to hear that somebody else noticed that as well and that I'm not just going insane...

Yes and "St Cuthbert" is an actual saint, the patron saint of Northumbria in Britain.

Cro-flah the Half-orc barbarian (spell it backwards).

Brinclhof Buckminsterfullerine the Gnome Alchemist. BrINClHOF is a way to remember halogens and buckminsterfullerine is an allotrope (I think that's what it's called, I hated chemistry) of carbon.

I've gone satirical a few times. I've played an Evil gnome named Chomsky. I DMed a cult leader (who also happened to be the Duke of Hubbard) named Elrond. As a DM, I had a Inn where the characters spent a lot of time. There was a statute of a Demon out front which was actually a petrified demon (which the character's did not learn until later). The name of the place was the Hard Vrock Cafe.

I'm an engineer, so when I am really at a loss for names, I can just use one of my current or former coworker's exotic sounding names (and I encounter some dooseys on an almost daily basis).

Once I played a Bard called Bard McBardbard.
He was the only character who survived for more than 2 levels, and ended up as the grizzled 18th lvl 45ish old mercenary who took control of a kingdom the size of Australia, killed 3 deities, became immortal, survived 11 lightning strikes, 4 assassinations, 7 rock slides, and everything else the DM could think off.
His stats where:
STR 13
CON 11
DEX 10
INT 9
WIS 6
CHA 12

In my first campaign, my friend Lathan made a Half-Orc Druid named Spar Keles. When pronounced really fast, it sounded like "sparklies". For the campaign that I am DMing now, he's a Dwarf Monk prostitute named Jacques Testicockules. I'm not sure what's worse, the name or that I allowed it. :thinks:

In another group I game with, there are two bards: Zoltan the Rock God, and Olindrix the Rock God (also called Olly the Third).

The earlier post about Count DeMonet reminded me of an NPC I threw at the characters, Lord Hardwick. Naturally, they all started chuckling and one asked "Lord Hardwick?" Being a bit of an actress, I drew myself up tall and proudly announced in my best English Lord voice, "Every inch a Hardwick!" Amidst the resultant laughter, I had to look aorund curiously, still in character and ask "What? What's so funny?"

Gnome Chomsky is just wrong of you...:D

As for Elrond Hubbard... I think that was Tom Cruise crying in your closet...:P

*Snip* Baron DeLapoer and his master Count deMonet

Gotta love History Of The World... But for bad names, check out The Life Of Brian.

There's Bigus Dickus, and Contenantia, to name a few...

In one of the games I am in we have a LG Paladin. Not so strange until you find out it's in the Cabal of Shadows. His name is Fallon, which can and will be taken a couple of different ways.

"gwen stafani"-elf sorceress
"MC Hammer"-dwarf ftr (dwarven hammers a'plenty)

etc. etc.

True story: When I was in Junior High, a classmate from Viet Nam, fairly new to the country, found out what his name says in English. His name was Kao Dung. After we told him, he spiked his hair, dyed it blonde, and insisted on being called Billy Idol.

Other true but unfortunate names I have encountered included a dentist named Dr. Pain and a pediatrician named Dr. Shortlife. On the list of names that sound like they're custom made for BBEG's is Dr. Horvath.
