59. The chance to trade the possibility of a long life for the possibility of a very exciting one.

60. Actual unspoiled wilderness areas (if you don't count the wandering trolls, orcs, and Colossal vermin). Well, ones that haven't been declared as national parks, where the tourists attempt to get pictures taken with the wild bears and get themselves mauled, anyway.

You notice how many people here (about every other post) give the reason why living in a DnD world would be awesome to be "picking up chicks" speicifically, exotic ones.

I think this is really perpetuating the whole stereotype of gamers being old men in their mom's basement who never actually touched a real woman.

I still don't understand why people love the idea of this world so much.

1. Odds are you can't pick up girls any easier than you could in real life. Adventurers just tend to go to cheap taverns where wenchs can be payed to perform favors.

2. In a metropolis less than 5% of the people there will be of a PC class. Yeah if your lucky to be born rich, and you work hard for most of your life training then you can accomplish something. In an unstable region you can be a veteran warrior or skilled thief by age 16 (min starting age roll for a brb/rog/sorc). By age 21 you could be a sergent in the military or a well known performer (max starting age roll brd/ftr/pal/rng). By age 22 you can have a PHD if you work hard enough and are smart enough (average starting age roll for a clr/drd/mnk/wiz). So yes, if you work your butt off and put everything on the line you can accomplish a lot in the D&D world provided your born above average. This is true in real life, but like in the D&D world most people arn't born above average, and most people that are don't work hard enough or risk enough to achieve great things. Of course by the simple virtue that it is a risk a lot of those who do in both the D&D world and the real world fail.

3. Casting spells... can't argue provided you can. Most can't though.

you'd be surprised how much easier it is to get a girl to like you once you've both saved each others life several times. (aka adventuring)

This thread is assuming a) that the people speaking would be the pc's and b) that they use the level up system where you don't actually have to do any work to achieve skill at something. Therefore, you could just go through high school (1 roll, or if you have the unearthed arcana book, one complex skill check, and you are out of that with a passing grade.) Repeat for collage, and just put your skill points in what you want to dedicate your life to.

And adressing the idea that elf girls and stuff would be just as hard to get to go out with you as real girls, need I point out the fact that these would be ELF GIRLS! Nevermind whether they will go out with you. Assuming that you have the same chance with them as you do a human girl, the bonus here is you could persue an elf girl instead of a human girl.

I think it's a fair assumption I'd be a bard. After all, I am a music performance major...
taltamir

12-16-04, 02:11 PM
the PC class bard is NOT the same as the traveling bards.

PC class bards are a type of sorcerers who use their music to control their magic. They have to have an unusualy ancestor (such as a dragon) from which their magic comes form. most bards are commoners with no magic or even HD.

Therefore, being a music major means nothing really, you have to have a penchant for music, or stories, or whatever, AND have certain ancestors AND unlock that power in you. So... which of your parents you wish didnt exist for that to happen? mommy or daddy? (since both are regular humans... for you to be a bard...)
Snommelp

12-16-04, 02:17 PM
Actually, I'd say it's an ancestor farther back than my parents. Probably the one I share with Mark Twain (yes, I'm related to Mark Twain, albeit distantly). And not all bards require monstrous ancestors, just like not all sorcerers do. My proof is that none of the core rulebooks say anything about a required magical ancestor, just that the classes have a natural talent for magic.

I am nearsighted. I use glasses when I drive, and have to squit to see stuff far away. But I see better then average close by. Better without the glasses actually.

Plus, even if you lived in a dnd world you still wouldnt get to choose your inborn traits. If anything, most of whats described here is more along the lines of "wouldnt it be cool to be able to min max myself using metagaming" then the "wouldnt it be cool to live in a dnd world".
jaceofwater

Yeah, but this is different. One of the base ideas in D&D, whether you acknowledge this or not, is simplicity. In the D&D world, there are clear-set lines on what happens when you take certain flaws or traits. you would automatically get so-and-so a bonus at blank feet and farther, anything before that is obscured, and everything after that is clear as day, and vice versa. It doesn't quite work like that in the real world. (But let's drop it, I'd rather not get into a discussion about whether min-maxing would work or not.)

ah yes.... level 20 wizard is bullying the apprentices that can only cast cantrips at the big mage college...

Also... usually a human wizard gets to level ONE at age 21... Thats when he studied since he was a child... Warriors.... age 16.

So as a teen they can cast nothing more then cantrips.. "Stay back you 5 bullies you, or I will cast prestigiditation on you... if you dont interrupt it with all your PoA (Punches of Opportunity) from me casting". Not to mention anything dumb automatically gets at LEAST twice the HP of a wizard. your 7 con 15 year old nerd with his 2 hp and an acid blast for 1d3 damage is gonna sure scare those 14 con level 1 with their 12 HP. Heck, he couldnt STAB them to death without making a crit.

I think I will, though... yeah, I'm just asking for it.

I think it would be really cool. Racial diversity is a Good Thing, because so many different cultures means so many different ways of looking at things... different perspectives, if you will; and more chances of solving any problem than if there were no separate cultures. Now add in separate species--and there's really no limit to what, with cooperation, you can acheive.

That's kind of like why I would really like it if we could make contact with intelligent extraterrestrial creatures. The totally different perspective on things could benefit both of us--if we were unprejudiced enough not to fight.

Yep, this is actually very possible. The "Wizards tend to be Lawful" thing means that kids who've had to discipline their minds to learn magic could easily end up forming organized societies to counter their physical weakness.
