This is a thread for the funniest houserules you have heard of. Since i started it, i better start it too:

1: Summon creature has arcane focus: top hat.

2. Talking "as your character" in the third person during the game causes you to become afflicted with the insanity spell.

Example:
Player: My dwarf asks how much a night at the inn will cost.
Innkeeper: What?
Player: I ask how much one night costs.
Innkeeper: I'm sorry. We do not rent our rooms to the mentally ill. Would you like me to call a doctor?

^ I had a spell based on using a wizard hat as a portable "whatever" :D I wanted to store my spell book, a few wands, a dagger and maybe a bag of coins up there...

:D

Ok... BAD HOUSE RULE!!!

Spells (all of them) take 1 full round to cast (or longer). This was my first DM ever...in a 2e game...in which I played a wizard and was killed before I could finish my first spell.

I don't think that DM ever looked into actual casting times...

Tehril, I think a hat would make a perfectly appropriate bag of holding!

Sure, as long as it fit properly -- imagine putting it on your head and then finding out it's just a little too big...

When you prepare an action and it is triggered, you can still act normall that round after your triggered action instead of acting on the initiative count when you took the action.

So if you readied yourself to fire sn arrow at the doorway, and something walked through it, you could fire that arrow, and another one during your regular initiatve.

Clerics & Wizards can spontatneously cast spells without needing to prepare them (made the sorc class useless pretty much)

Paladins, regardless of sex or personal choice, must be homosexual because nobody else would devote their lives to celebacy & religion exept gay people. (My DM told me this one after I rolled up a 1st level paladin)
My friends DM let his character's roll a 4d6 less the lowest die for ability scores. Any roll that was 10 or less immeadiatly became a ten, and then the person could roll a d8 and add that to the roll. You were garunteed at least an 11, and probably a 14 for every "Bad" roll. This was the party who teleported around in time and brought m-16's back to the middle ages.

Edit: Deleted. This was an error in interpretation, not a house rule.

In the games I'm playing in, a critical threat will do max damage. IE - a player rolls a 19 on a long sword, regardless of whether or not the threat is confirmed, the player is guaranteed to do 8 + str damage

Elven people are all tall and lanky.

Dwarf women have beards.

Clerics get proficiency with their deity's favorite weapon. Clerics with the War domain get Focus.

Walking behind my screen is dealt with through the use of XP Drain. ANy player reduced to 0 or less XP in this way is turned into a JuuJuu Zombie. If, by some miracle, they're reduced to -4,000 XP in this manner, they immediately become a JJZ Lich Lord.

Not exactly house rules, but house "feats"

Swear like a Salior: A rouge character took this for his 4th level feat in a diplomatic campaign. Rather self explanitory....

Counterfeat: It was left unnamed, but the palidin character took it in response to "Swear like a salior." It caused anyone who said anything offensive to look at their feet and shuffle around uncomfortably.

Both these "feats" proved quite useful coincidently.

When you reach level 21, you get a theme song. Popular choices include:

Barbarian, "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf
Bard, "Wayward Son" by Kansas
Cleric, "Jesus is Just All Right with Me" by the Doobie Brothers
Druid, "The Trees" by Rush
Fighter, "War" by Edwin Starr
Monk, "Kung-fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas

...I think you get the idea.

ppl in my group didn't like the feat progression in the book so....

feat every level!!
(which lead to a banning of the fighter class, still trying to think of a way to incorporate weapon spec into the game)

Quite a few years ago I found it necessary to start hitting characters with 1d6 Strength or Dexterity damage whenever the player quoted Monty Python & the Holy Grail. This usually took the form of a lightning bolt, but could come from other sources depending on the setting. Occasionally characters would suffer this damage from other Python quotes or just particularly bad puns, but Holy Grail quotes were (and are) the most common problem.

Any player that tries abuses a core rule (including the DM) pays for pizza.

1. attemptinbg to play a kender results in ejection from the game

2. attemptinbg to play a kender results in ejection from the game

3. gnomes DO NOT tinker

4. gnomes DO NOT tinker

5. If an NPC can do something so can the players.

6. any spell so good that every mage on the planet wants it, is obviously too good. This goes for feats and magic items as well.

ie 2nd level version of magic missile, that stuns for damage in rounds...save for half (also most forgotten realms spells)

7. every women with 18 charisma is probably a monster in disquise

8. Just cus your level 1 doesnt mean that all the hard encounters are hiding in their lairs.... if you see a troll run away.

I told my group this recently...

DM: Attn: Blood thirsty party (BTP) if you see something that looks odd watch it first then consider running away.

DM: You enter a cavern, there is a fast flowing river flowing thru the center. On the other side of the river you see a large stalagmite that looks odd.

BTP: we check this wall for secret door (they looked away from the "stalagmite")

DM: you what?

BTP: We search the wall for secret door and traps.

DM: Ok, as you search the wall the "stalagmite" opens a large red eye and says "Ah, fresh meat" (the roper attacks)

Basically as a house rule I try to warn them that there are things out there that will KILL them...

They'll never learn

I will have to ban elves and cn characters for a time. I believe its the only way to make my players learn.

This sounds like a fun campaign. I wish I'd been in it. As for the second feat, how about "Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap" or "Would You Kiss Your Mother With That Mouth?"

My all-purpose drinking contest rules:

1. All participants roll a Fort save each round. The DC starts at something low, like 12.

2. Each round the DC goes up by two as the tankards get bigger, the moonshine gets brought out, etc.

3. When a character misses his third Fort save, he falls unconscious and is out for the night. Last character standing wins.

4. Subdual damage the next morning is 1d4 x total number of rounds. The Fort save for half damage is (first round's DC + last round's DC) / 2, even for characters who passed out early.

There's nothing wrong with chaotic neutral, just the moronic people who play it as chaotic stupid or psychotic neutral. :nonono:

Yeah CN is fine, it's just that it needs to be played the way most people play CG rebels.

The way most people play CN is actually CE.

CG characters should be happy-go-lucky, easy-going, and always ready for adventure. They should embody the virtues of Fellowship, Humility, and Zeal.

It's amazing just how true this can be in real life. :behold:

Well, it really has very little to do with how they play their CN pc's. If they play out of alignment, I can change it. It's more due to the fact that i have only twice seen one of them play another alignment. One of those times, he was a NE drow. Nuff said.

I think many of these players have seen a bit too much of Ed II, where IMHO almost every alignment was a corner alignment.

Speaking of extraplanar spaces, in my new campaign, magic is extremely powerful, but unstable (caster level +1, wild magic). Anyway, it is being used for the most ludicrous things. It is not uncommon for a brewery to use portable holes for brewing ale. Basically, they concist of a storage room, a garden and a shelf filled with handkerchiefs:D

All PC classes are automatically proficient with all simple weapons, because, since they're so simple, everyone should know how to use them!

on a critical hit maximum damage role a fortitude save vs the total damage or be stunned. If you fail this one make another or be KO, and if you fail this one make another or be dead. This needs to be a natural 20 not just a critical and t he damage for teh purposes of the asve is based on x2

On a fumble makea 2nd to hit roll. If this misses you either attack yourself / friend nearby, drop your weapon, break your weapon (do a sunder against your own weapon)

The POWER that resurects you alters your alignment towards their own if they resurect you....

My favourite house rule: Moaning about magic items having "Crappy" qualities ("Aww! I wanted a +5 vorpal flaming Greatsword! not a cheesy +4 flaming burst longsword!") prompts a sudden, inexplicable rain of rods of cancellation.... or orbs of anniahlation, If I'm feeling vindicative. :D

we have a system to determine "hotness" on a scale of 1-20

we take 2d6 and a "BAM" Die(I have no idea what it is but where the 6 should be on a d6 it has a huge exlaimation point. Our DM bought a pound of random dice off the net while drunk one night). We roll 2d6 and add em then roll for a possible BAM!... if BAM! is rolled we then roll a friend or foe die(we have one. thank you pound  ) if it lands on friend we add an extra die to her hotness. Here's the funny part though.. if it lands on foe it we roll a d3(again we do have one)...

on a 1 she's a minor

on a 2 she's either mentally handicapped or a total :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored:

on a 3 she's a BURN VICTIM hahaha...

I play a CN cleric/barbarian... he is simply very aloof... and partly crazy, but that has more to do with the 9 intelligence...

House rule: Everyone must have a back-up character. Psionics are different (which is actually an optional rule, not a house rule).
No more than three character switches are allowed. After that, I force you to keep using your character. Any attempt to purposley kill said character just so you can use your back up will instantly fail (ex. If you force your character to say... run off a cliff, he won't fall due to the wall of force that suddenly appears!)
