Ever find yourself days away from a game but without any ideas that you think will live up to your Players expectations? Well never fear, we’re here to help! Below are a few ideas, some gleamed from the greatest fantasy novels ever made, others pulled from the depths of your fellow DMs minds all of them sure to breath new life into role-playing campaign. 1) Source: Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien Idea: Tom Bombadil is a powerful spirit who lives in the Old Forest. He has control over the trees, the flowers, the animals – everything. In the Old Forest, Tom is practically a god. Unfortunately, he can’t (or chooses not to) leave his tiny domain. Tie-in: The PCs recruit the aid of an ultra-powerful ally who is limited to a set area, or maybe a foe is nigh unstoppable within a limited area, but little power outside it. 2) Source: Quantum Leap Idea: Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and Vanished... He woke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. And so Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home. Tie-in: The hero’s are transported back in time, or possibly to another plane. They are unable to return to their own plane/time until certain conditions are met and find themselves being moved randomly around the plane or through time. They have a magical guide whom they can see, but is unable to aid them in any way accept as an advisor. 3) Source: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco Idea: One of the key libraries in 14th century Christendom is located in a fortress abbey. Its precious books are protected by traps and a maze. The filing system is equally devious: each room has a letter on the wall which, when linked with other letters in other room, spells out the various filing categories in Latin. One even leads to a secret room filled with bans books. Tie-in: The PCs may be called upon to decipher the filing system of a similar library, either in search of a specific book or in search of one of the mysterious banned books. I Look forward to hearing your ideas! More to come from me! |
