They always try to do it. Sneak up on the BBEG while he's monologuing and get the edge.

Now come on, the DM has spent MONTHS getting to this point, put up with A LOT of crap, and finally the PCs have managed to get to the BBEG's lair.

Now is the moment he's been waiting for... to brag about his evil plans, and for the DM to do his best "evil laugh"

... but will the characters give him his due??? Heck no!

However, truely genius BBEG's alway have a contingency plan, and that includes the monolgue. So for all you harried DMs out there I give you:

101 Ways to Prevent Characters From Interupting the BBEG's Monologue(Bwha ha ha ha ha ha:evillaugh )

1) Its not really him talking, but a simulacrum. As soon as the characters attack he "poofs" into a pile of dust, and another one appears nearby to continue the speech. Meanwhile, "the real" BBEG is casting all kinds of nasty spells and buffs, and getting his flunkies ready for a smack down.

2) The floor in front of the BBEG is an illusion, so when the thief tries to sneak invisibly over for that back stab he falls into a nasty pit filled with spike and a really nasty monster... that is really hungry!

3) As per 2, but there is also an anti-magic field over the pit, just in case somebody decides flying is clever.

4) its not really him, but an illusion... go back to 1 for the rest

5) its all done with mirrors friends... SPELL reflecting mirrors, that is... "fireball coming online B.A.".... ouch!

6) Can you say combo? Its really a simulacrum, standing in front of the spell reflecting mirror, that is behind the pit with the illusionary floor, and anti magic field (which only kicks on when someone is above the pit) just above. "Yes! There will be blood..."

More to come, heh, heh. Please feel free to add your own and continue the thread!!!

7: Mass Hold
8: Kill them all, raise them as undead under his control, then give his speech
9: Have the speech pre-recorded in Magic Mouths

10. Kind of lame, but not having him monologue in the first place seems effective. Have him say something short and sweet, like:

"There's nothing left to say, for either of us. I will bury you today!"

And none of this :evillaugh , it just looks cartoonish.

11. Have your BBEG's many tentacled, massive grapple master keeping them busy by holding them down, about to rip them all to shreds.

Psh; the whole point of the BBEG is the monologue. I'd be let down as a player if he didn't have a speech. As DM, I try to compose stirring pieces of oratory. I've had monologues that bordered on 10 minutes, and my players didn't even notice.

I have never, for all my times as a DM, given an evil BBEG speech. If they're smart, they'll just say "Your end is near." and send all their minions after them.

good players will know enough not to inturrupt the BBEG's monologue, because they realize that his monologue will give away the secret to defeating his dastardly plan...

however... BBEG's should never attempt a monologue unless they have the PCs at thier mercy anyway, and are preparing to place them in the "Escape proof" death trap (Which the PCs will quickly escape and using the information from the monologue defeat the BBEG and his plan).

If there is immenent threat of getting his rear end handed to him by the PCs no BBEG should waste time trying to monologue. You never see Doctor Doom or the Red Skull monologueing when the heroes kick in the door... they always wait until they have the upper hand.

That would be 12) The PCs are at my mercy then!

14). The BBEG is composed of tiny insects or sand, and is therefore immune to weapon damage thanks to the swarm subtype.

and/or

15). The BBEG is a Master of the Sevenfold Veil, and is therefore immune to magical attacks, breath weapons, and ranged attacks of any kind.
