Hi folks,

The following thread is being set up in advance of 10/14's Design & Development column. Feel free to post any arguments for your vote in You Craft the Creature (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20051014a)!

Thanks.

I want to create divine dragon that will be bound to nature and it can also take some drud class levels and wild shape as ex. ability to colossal elder elemental
Can you imagine a dragon with an animal companion.

DRAGON WOOOOOOOT

I want a beast suitable for a PC Cohort or even possibly even a player but with the feal of a true dragon

natural attacks for everyone

I voted for humanoid, although Monstrous humanoid (or even giant) would work just fine for me. What gives a monster traction with me is the sense that it has a place in the narrative of the game-world, with culture and ecology and goals of its own. I think it's harder to come up with a balanced, playable race that isn't just a "modified hobbit" than it is to just stat up another aberration, and add tentacles. Wizards has done a fair job supporting the existing choices as of late, but I feel that this kind of creature benefits the most from fresh perspectives. Perfect for wiki-velopment! ;)

Dragons, outsiders, and the like are crunchy additions to the world, which can be fun . . . but there's enough information on templates and advancement in Wizard's (and OGL!) products that I can whip one of these up fairly quickly.
Gnome_Dragon_Disciple

10-14-05, 02:26 AM
Aberration all the way. There's no such thing as a monster too wierd, too disgusting, or too alien for a memorable encounter. Better still, most aberrations are intelligent beyond most people's slightest dreams, meaning they're PERFECT for a campaign's BBEG.

On the other hand, D&D needs more intelligent Oozes... Maybe an intelligent Aberration with the Ooze subtype?...
Tyhm

10-14-05, 06:48 AM
If only Ooze were a subtype - but perhaps a more humanoid ooze. Something with mock-intelligence. Ooh, an Ooze in armor would be sick! Think like a voidmind, "but all over". The zombie of the Ooze world - it tricks players up twice, "It's a knight in black armor wielding a bastard sword - can't be critted? Zombie! Immune to divine? Ack, I'm being eaten alive!" Avenge the fallen oozemaster. Not quite a Worm-That-Walks, not quite a MoFæ jellyman, just an ooze that approaches playability. Hell, maybe play up the water aspect - we've all seen Abyss right?
But I already said construct. What? Nimblewrights aren't enough, okay?
InfoStorm

10-14-05, 10:30 AM
Voted Humanoid. I prefer versitility to keep everyone guessing, and nothing is more versitily than a simple humanoid race with +0 to +2 ECL that can be given any character class. Also gives something that can be easily scaled for any level of adventure.

How about a sub-race of evil centaurs that live in the swamps or Underdark.Maybe if they lived in the swamps they could be named:/Bog centaurs and Underdark/Deep Centaur or something that fits. Feel free to comment.

I went elemental, just cuase elementals can be very intersting if people would just step outside the box of the stereotipical elemental.
porygandrew

10-14-05, 01:40 PM
I chose Fey because there's not a whole lot in that department. Besides, Dragons, Monstrous Humanoids, and aberrations are probably the most prevailent monster types (and magical beasts). Let's try a category that doesn't have much in it.
InfoStorm

10-14-05, 02:38 PM
Well, without having to do too much recreation, there were a number of interesting elementals in the "Basic Rules" (aka Red box) that could easily be updated and brought over to 3rd ed. Kryst, Undines, and others who's names I can't remember off the top of my head. (15 years since I opened that one).
Lord Doombringer

10-14-05, 04:15 PM
I voted abberations, mainly because I'm fond of them due to them usually being unique and imaginative.
However, I predict that the dragon type will win. I also predict that the monster will be a generic dragon that everyone will try to make into a fusion between every dragon they've ever thought of.
I'd not mind seeing a fey or an ooze though. Those are some very good types that get little to no recognition.
(All in all, I don't care much what it is, just as long as its very interesting and unique.)

My pick was for an outsider, and here's why:

As one might expect, there's huge diversity in evil outsiders- Devils, Demons, and Yugoloths to represent each alignment, plus a bunch that can fit in just about anywhere, plus a few niche outsiders like Demodands. There are also a lot of good outsiders, again, not just limited to Archons, Eladrins, and Guardinals.

However, the Lawful, Chaotic, and Neutral areas are sorely lacking. Undoubtedly this is because they aren't clear-cut allies or enemies... but still they suck excessively. The iconic Lawful outsiders are Formians. These guys are almost totally ignorable unless you happen to be in their way. Evil outsiders aren't content to commit evil acts upon those who happen to get close to them- they travel the Prime Material (as well as the Outlands and Astral planes) to spread their influence. Good outsiders do the same, to a lesser extent. So why aren't Formians doing the same thing?

Modrons are basically the same, if they even make it into a game (having been pubished in only a web supplement). Worse, they don't even seem to have a coherent purpose in existence, save their futile (and, IMHO, non-lawful) attacks on the Outlands.

Slaadi are even worse. When one shows up in a game, it's basically filling the role of a demon. They even tend towards CE alignment at certain stages. Plus, they all basically look the same and have similar (though progressive) abilities? Chaotic? Not really.

The True Neutral representatives, the Rilmani, are barely worth mentioning.

The bottom line is, Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, and True Neutral outsiders should fill the same role for PCs and NPCs that Celestials and Fiends do. That means that a Lawful Neutral or Chaotic Neutral character should admire LN/CN outsiders as much as a Good character admires Celestials. Good characters can have their prayers answered by the appearance of an Astral Deva to help them out, but if the Barbarian prays, would a Gray Slaad come? Would the party (even the Barbarian) want it to? I doubt it.

That's why I encourage everyone to vote for a new Outsider, and to vote for LN, N, or CN alignments when the question comes up.

However, I think there's also a strong need for a good Fey, scalable, that makes sense in the Seelie Court. A good "tractionfull" ooze or plant would be good, too, as the game basically lacks these as well. We have enough freaking (monstrous) humanoids and dragons.
The Brat Prince

10-14-05, 04:36 PM
So i already voted for Magical Beast and i'm now totally regretting it. I seriously think the Game needs a new Fey, something a shade more playable as a PC than my current fay PC, a Grig (just don't ask.) For once i'd like to be able to play a Fey who's the same damn size as everyone else.

I'm thinking something like a Fey aristocrat or diplomat, charged with being a go-between when the Fey royalty deign to deal with the Lesser Races.

Ive voted for a dragon....but i dont want a traditional dragon......no

the game needs a cross between a shadow dragon and a half-elf or human, that can shift to half-elf (or human form) or stay looking kinda like a half shadow dragon.

not to mention it can steal souls and use them to create either shadows or (if it was a dragon or hlaf-dragon) another one of its kind a la undead spawning abilitys.

these guys would be right up there with mind flayers and drow for the dark shadowy masterminds......or at least they are in campaigns i run.

o....maybe i shouldnt of put this since these guys are going in my books......

Time to date myself with this one....

I remember (and have obtained a copy of) a CBM pic featuring a "Leaf Dragon". A tiny green/brown tinged dragon with wings that had a leafy look, that allowed the dragon to camouflage itself virtually anywhere plants grew. Sort of a cross between a dragon, fey, and plant.

Thought the concept was so cool I designed monster stats around it. Wish I still had them.....

Man, everybody is voting for a dragon...
I really hoped people wouldn't do that. I could probably just fine with about anything but a dragon. I think there are enough cool dragons out there. I'd like to see a really awesome fey or really original humanoid. I don't know. What about a plant? No one's going to vote for plant. I'm going to go cry in a corner.
Edit:
Hell I don't know what I'm talking about. Disregard everything I just said. Or don't. Whatever.

I voted for Fey. I just like the idea of fey, and I feel there really cannot be to many nature spirits going around.

If I didn't vote for fey, I would have voted for Abberation. But now that MindwanderB brings it up, I would totally vote for a real LN/CN/TN outsider.
conjurer_lord

10-14-05, 06:35 PM
Everyone says there aren't enough plants and fey, and this is true. But there could definitely be more elementals. You have the four basic ones, the invisible stalker, the belker, the thoqqua, and the magmin in the MM, along with a smattering in other compendiums. But there are so many other things that can be made into elementals. Imagine a series of elemental emotions (love elemental, rage elemental, grief elemental, hate elemental, etc) or a melding of several elements (a mud elemental (water and earth), a steam elemental (fire and air) etc).

I'm thinking something like a Fey aristocrat or diplomat, charged with being a go-between when the Fey royalty deign to deal with the Lesser Races.

Somehow I picture an illusory-hulking drooling barbarian, at once an olive branch of sameness and an satire of humanity from the fey P.O.V.
'cuz for pretty medium size fey, c'mon, we got nymphs, glourae, satyrs, dryads...
Wild Yapok

10-15-05, 10:17 AM
I also used the "What are we lacking" question before I voted. In the MM we have 2x CR1, CR 2 (or 4), CR 3, CR 4 (or 5), and CR 7.

It would be nice to have a nice 12-15 CR guardian of the forest style fey I think :)
Savras

10-15-05, 11:58 AM
Ooze, people!
We need a cool ooze.

All the oozes we got just muck around the place, do nothing interesting.

"Ooh, look, it dissolved something I had"
"Oh my, it split. *yawn*. Is this the part we scream in fear?"

Come on!
We need an ooze with a twist!
An intelligent ooze.

An ooze that can be a supervillian!

Oozes of the world unite!

See the Tauric template in Savage Species. It's been done.

I voted for Fey, because I'd really like to see a Fey which I can actually use in the game. Or as a PC would be great. And yeah, a high CR Fey would be neat. Fey are really a staple of Fantasy, (just like Dragons), but there aren't enough of them in the D&D world.

But I wouldn't mind an elemental, because there really aren't a lot of those. Though the Elemental and Half-Elemental template in one of the Planar Books are really helpful for filling that void.
Gnome_Dragon_Disciple

10-15-05, 05:42 PM
There's plenty of elementals... ya just gotta know where to look. Even Complete Arcane has Elemental Grues (basically low-CR evil elementals) and Elemental Monoliths (extremely BIG elementals), while MM 3 has the Omnimental and a couple more (I believe Storm Elemental was one of them). I'm pretty sure Libris Mortis also had an elemental, but I might just be thinking of the Grave Dirt Golem. Still, there are some fairly obvious elementals that we're lacking, like Magic-type elementals...

I mean, think about it. The Arcane Elemental, the Divine Elemental, the Incarnum Elemental, and the Psionic Elemental. And elementals of allignment, like an Evil Elemental, Law Elemental, Chaos Elemental, and Good Elemental (maybe even an Elemental of Neutrality that gets extremely poor attacks but has obscene defenses). Toss in elements for some of the lesser-traveled planes, too! The Negative and Positive Energy Elementals, and an Ectoplasm Elemental!

A nice low-ECL fey, with favored class Warlock and enough of an inherit boost to either charisma or "Casts as a _ level Warlock" to offset (somewhat) whatever ECL they're saddled with.
It's sad that a Fighter-type can pick dang near any monster and their boost to strength, special attacks, and defenses will offset the loss of Base Attack Bonus and saves, but a skill-based or spell-based character gets raked over the coals whenever ECL comes up. Plus, c'mon, half the D&D girls I know play pretty-pretty casters and give up when it gets past Burning Hands. Why is the lowest learning curve on the most masculine archetype and the most complicated on the most effeminate? Warlock has the potential to be the gateway-caster, the Fighter-Class of all Casters, the Point and Click Nuker, then they make the default skin Snarlyguy the Wicked.
A graceful, charismatic fae warlock(ess) fills a much-needed gap when Nymphs just don't cut it - low ECL/balanced for casters...

I would like a true creature of chaos from Limbo.

Though Salad are cool, a creature whose form changes from moment to moment. A true being of chaos.

A set of charts and a die could determine what the creature would like round to round. A DM could prepare the creatures forms randomly (or not so randomly) before the adventure takes place (thus saving some time during actual roleplaying).

I voted for magical beast, but from what I have been reading I think Fey should have been my vote. :nonono:

Magical beasts already include some tractionable monsters, but fey, regardless of their prominant/universal place in various world mythologies do not have a truely prolific and memorable monster (lets exclude the Nymph and Dryad  because they are rather freindly and not very wrath of nature oriented).

I suppose a leprichan would be to much to ask for, seeing as a properly classed Gnome could fit the bill. But that would be cool. :smirk:

Outsiders and elementals have a lot of stuff for themselves already, as do undead, aberations, and Dragons :dragon: (who have something for everyone at every CR). Fey need some meat on their team. :tiphat:

I voted outsider, and i'm not thinking along the lines of alignment...more of a template that can be applied to good outsiders that represents a partial infection of vampirism into themselves.

that'd be sweet, a divine angel that has been cursed with the strength, endurance, and most importantly the blood lust of a vampire

i think it would make a very memorable monster for the pc's to fight...or help be freed from the curse.

Oo, like the Teratamorph from MM2. Nothing like a crazy flying goo that turns things into Zambonis or Ocelots just for getting within range (and is somehow true neutral) - but a random appearance would be nice too. Preferably the same stats each round, but different attack modes, maybe some special qualities (uncrittable one round, unflankable the next, immune to weapon damage, immune to magic the next...)

I suppose a leprichan would be to much to ask for, seeing as a properly classed Gnome could fit the bill. But that would be cool. :smirk:

10-18-05, 05:07 AM
Can't be too much longer before the decision's made - what say when some of our favorites are disqualified we make 'em ourself? Less canon, but everything's a question of appropriate CRs anyway - if we got the CR wrong for the monster, boo tapdancing hoo, it's still a monster and the rules (back of MM1) still support its existance. I'm up for building the warlock fey, the armored ooze and the fey mockhumanoid ambassador.

I voted for Dragon in the poll because dragons are my faves. But a new fey race would be cool. Some of the best fey creatures are unplayable because they are stuck to something like a tree or a pool of water. How about a creature like the fox demons of Inuyasha (like Shippo) or maybe the fairy (like Paul Kidd's Escalla, who seems to be similar to a pixie but the special abilities are different).

Part of what made the drow tractionable is their connection to the Underdark, a whole new arena but one which was understood easily by the first-time reader to be "a really cool dungeon."

I like the idea of a new fey (even though I voted for Dragon - doh!) but I'd like them better if their introduction into a campaign meant opening up of a new world... and not a fey court or something complex that has to be explained all the time, but a world that is the epitome of certain elements already present (like the Underdark being the ultimate dungeon)... Maybe a "world of dreams" or something corny like that. Maybe magic itself could be a world that these critters come from... each magic item or spell could for them be a home or hiding place or battle ground or portal...

my first instinct was to vote for dragons, but then it occured to me that outside the basic MM dragons, it's almost impossiable to get traction with a dragon. after some thought I decided to go with humanoid, simply because a properly developed humanoid race would gain traction quickly, by properly developed of course I mean an intresting history etc.

if it's a race that could be featured as the character of a book, and could be your next PC, it's more likely to gain traction.

case in point, the drow

I'm personally in favor of some kind of Magical Beast with Human-like Intelligence, a bunch of hefty Natural Weapons, and maybe something useful like Flight to top it off (I like running flying characters 'cause it really makes the DM work...). Most of the more interesting flying Beasties out there are useless as possible Races because they lack communication or are depicted more as Animals than otherwise - take Dragonnes and Griffons for example. Cool all around, smart(-ish), etc. - but the one is limited by poor flight and the other by its socially-unacceptable eating habits ("Oh man. It ate the Fighter's Horse - again..."). And neither one has any really good way to seriously talk to and interact with other characters (other than those few who speak Auran) other than to go "Grrr..." and attack (even though they're both intelligent enough to be more interesting than that).
I'd like to see some kind of Large, flighted predator with real personality and the possibility to have actual social contact with other Races - maybe with Telepathy to get around the whole communication issue. Such a creature would add a totally new and interesting dimension to the average combat. The big advantages of flight and fighting capability would be balanced by the general awkwardness of its shape in relation to the generally "Humanoid" world (think about things like doors and Magic Items here...). It's also really fun to role-play what happens when your "big critter" strolls into town, too - is it gonna eat everybody, or let the little kiddies have "horsey" rides...? If the Magical Beast Type doesn't quite fit this idea, then it should probably fall into the Monstrous Humanoid Type (even if it isn't a bi-ped...).
If you can't tell, I've already got something very, very specific in mind...
;)
And Sphinxes don't count - they're way too pigeon-holed to be as versatile as what I'm thinking...

Do you remember the balrog on Lord of the Rings? We need one of those. I haven't seen one of them yet. Im voting for fey. There are so few fey creatures in the monster manuals. My friends and I like to play evil campains so a few more fairy type creatures would be cool. Brownies, fairies, leprechauns ect. Medium or large fey would be interesting but so would tiny.

I like dragons and could vote for them.. but so i like animals, magical beasts and the nifty aberrations.. so, which one to pick? My decision: all in one darn odd freakin weird mix: PLANT :D

Also, the seed from one character of mine that havend made it to the sheets yet, What if an arcane, that likes transmutation (many, almost as much as them spell-slingers-o-doom, i tell ye :P ), play too much with the olive mold and itīs counter part and other odd plants? What if he also made researches with other kinds of cretures? The possible result, a major change from whatever race he is to a new one.. and mayhaps changing the town he lives at or unlucky travelers taht might cross paths with him.

So, monstrous humanoid, magical beast, aberration... mix all in one using an inteligent plant for a start.. As for dragon, fiend, elemental and the like, thatīs easily fixed with a template.. ;)

Voted elemental FTW.
I want some more incanations of the universe that are more specific than outsides. Besides to that, elementals have some awesome immunities without the no-con drawback that undead and constructs have.
My secondary choices are fey and plant, because they are underrepresented and under powered. I think that there needs to be a high end for those types.

So... why has this thing not changed for over a week now? Is this going to be a very slow process, or has it been forgotten about?

I figured it to be a weekly poll, like the creature competitions...

o come on! No one votes for Giants?! Well I voted for them, cause I dont consider them as overused as dragons, or as common as aberrations. yes, i say we have enough aberrations. fey dont have traction, and there are too many humanoids. i would have voted for Deathless though, they're awesome. and what does it take to move to the next step? it should be a "select 3" or something for special abilities though

I for one would love to see new Oozes. Intellegent oozes would be a definite way to scare the stuffing out of my players. Although the "Evil Fey" idea is starting to give me a few ideas ...

Evil Fey!!! Very interesting idea. Maybe something like a "gremlin". I would like to see a medium or large fey creature, evil or good.

Feys rox they are very few feys , and they are all good fey. I want a evil dark fey. I want the fey who wants to protect the forest by killing everything , or one who goes into the forest. Like a dark evil nymph. That would be cool.

Abberation won, so now it's time to start constructing the Second Best.
As for powerful evil fey - I direct your attention to the Epic Level Handbook's Hoarie Hunter, however it's spelled, a nice epic evil fey. Yes, an inbetween probably would be nice - the Devious Glourae of Underdark fit the bill nicely if all else fails.
A high end plant - the Mu Spore (epic again) is a colossal walking redwood that devours everything in its path, especially adventurers and their weapons, now that's freaking great.

I'm still on the hook for the warlock fey, the armored ooze and the fey mockhumanoid ambassador - should be able to start on them in earnest when my games wrap Thursday. Anyone have a preference on which I post first, (assuming anyone even cares?)

I voted for an Undead, Because I would like to see another intelligent undead like the Lich or Vampire. I just think it would be cool and you could always find a way for your character to become that type of undead. This is just my idea and what i would like to see but what ever comes out will probably be cool anyway. :D
