1st ed. DM Screen? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-20-05, 02:43 PM Is there a place online where I can download a 1st. Ed. DM Screen? I've seen links to the 3rd ed. but all my other resources are for 1st edition.

LOL The idea to market a custom DM screen didn't show up until 2nd edition. During 1st edition they focused on the game and material instead of marketing "fluff" as they would call it. We used the old 5 cent copiers at the grocery store to copy the DM stuff and then glue the killer artwork from Dragon magazine to the front. After a while we made it an unofficial contest to see who could design the better screen.

Someone must have bilked me all those years ago, because not only do I have an official TSR 1st Edition DM screen (all copyrighted and such), after reading the screen I realized that there is a second one that I believe was sold in tandem with this one. Mine is fairly useless, as it covers mostly psionics and is an ugly mustard yellow color. The flip side has the experience tables for the fighter, cleric, magic-user and thief. The other one might prove useful as it claims to have combat and weapons tables.

09-21-05, 10:41 AM I have thought about making my own. I played back in the dark ages too. That is where I got all of my 1st. ed. stuff, but that was a long time ago, and I've either lost the DM screen, or it ended up in my brother-in-law's possession (Like some of his books ended up in mine).

At any rate, I am borrowing one from a friend, along with a psionics screen, but they aren't mine. Really, all I wanted it for was to hide some stuff from the players, and as a quick reference since I've forgotten most of what I never knew.

He's also got a cool wheel that lets you look up tables without a screen, and I may copy that and laminate it for myself.

A DM screen with clear pockets would let me slip in images relative to the current map.... That would be cool.

I just didn't want to go through the work of building my own charts and all that if it was already done. I got enough to do in making our map intersting and fun.

That's weird, I went every weekend to a game store in Sacramento and bought whatever was new and cool (D&D stuff, anyway). They told me there were no manufactured DM screens and that you had no choice but to make your own. I guess I was the one who was "bilked" :rant: , if it was out there at the time, I would have grabbed it. :headexplo :hoppingma oh well, don't need one now, still have the original homemade one in a keepsake box. I do have a nice collection of 2ed and 3ed and 3.5ed ones...... :drool:

09-29-05, 09:58 AM A friend of mine has a 1st. Ed. DM screen (The official version, just like my brother-in-law's was), but I'm not going to use it. He also has a nifty "Wheel" device for determining to hit and whatnot. It came in issue #74 of Dragon.

(I know because not only does he still have that issue, he also has a Mint, second copy of the same issue, with the wheel still attached on a heavy insert!!

You cut out the two parts, lay one on top of the other, and insert a clip in the center to hold them together. Then you just line up your wheels, and it tells you what the to hit is (It might do other things, but I haven't got to read up on it yet.) I'm going to scan that wheel, and make my own laminated wheel.

As for the screen, I still want one, but I don't need an original. I'll just laminate my own with pockets that I can slide images relative to the current campaign area. BTW - There were several revisions of the DM screen, all the way from 1st. I've seen a website with pictures of the covers of all of them.
