This one is a dumb question, but if I have a 1st level monk and he decides to take a level in rogue, how many skill points does he get (assume no int mod and not human), 8 or 32?

Another dumb one. Specialist wizards can only decide to specialize at 1st level. Is this 1st character level or 1st class level. IOW can said monk become an illlusionist at 2nd character level or just a wizard?

Thanks

Only 8. Max skill points and hit points are only at 1st character level, not 1st class level.

I'd let him specialize, because I believe that whenever a class feature refers to "level" it means class level.

He gets 8 + Intelligence modifier. You only multiply skill points by four at your very first character level, which in your case is rogue. The rogue gets 8 skill points at each level.

keep in mind that your monk won't be able to progress as a monk once he strays from the path, as stated in the PHB.

Now, onto the wizard question:

Specialization occurs at 1st level the book says, which is pretty vague. I take that to mean first character level. That basically says that your character spent years learning how to be an abjurer, evoker, or whatever. I don't think a 10th level rogue should be able to pick up a level of wizard, and automatically be able to specialize, because I feel specialization requires years of intensive training.

That's just my opinion though...I'm sure others do it differently. Hell, it might even be a question worthy of the stage.

School specialization is a class ability of a wizard, and as such characters can multiclass into specialist wizards just the same as generalists.

Likewise, elven wizards who choose to specialize still benefit from having wizard as their favored class. The latter has been answered in the FAQ, and both issues (concerning specialist wizards and multiclassing, that is) are based on the same thing.

8 + INT mod.

And I'm quite sure you may take specialization at your first wizard level. Although the concept of multiclassing to wiz is ridiculous, the training needed to specialize is no more demanding, it's just different.

I think a little common sense applies here. If the answer was "32", then the best characters in the game would be those who multi-class. So, yes, it's only 8 (+ your INT modifier, if any).

It is 1st-class level. The point is that, when you first dedicate yourself to Magic, you can choose to specialize. Having levels in other classes has no impact on this. So, yes, your Monk can become an Illusionist.
