2 starter sets..which one? advice plz [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm just wanting to get back into D&D after 6 or so years of not playing, and I'm also trying to get my friend who has never played D&D to get into it. I was considering getting one of the two "starter" sets.. .. those box sets that have dice, early dungeon crawl, condensed rules, etc.

There are two of them, one for $10 and one for $24, does anybody have any recommendations?

07-30-04, 11:56 PM I'd vote you get the Basic set...but it's not quite out yet as far as I know.

07-31-04, 12:50 PM Go splits on the Players hand book Dungeon Master Guide and Monster manual and make up ur own adventure, or if u wanna se if you like it use the SrD here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35)

The "Adventure Game" was published in 2000 which means it will lead you into v3.0 stuff; the basic set will be based on v3.5. All of the books published since about this time last year are v3.5 so you might as well get the starter set that works with rest of the material out there.

If you don't want to wait that long though (and I can't say that I'd blame you if you didn't), then as Steelgryphon suggested, get a set of core books (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual) and just start off small and don't worry about getting everything exactly right the first time.

http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org has several versions of the SRD in both HTML and PDF format.
