I only played Dark Sun for a year, and then I did not play again for 3 or 4 years later, but I have always wanted to know why it was never translated to 3ed.

Probably because one of the things that killed TSR was trying to support too many settings.

Let's see, off the top of my head they had:

Dragonlance
Greyhawk
Forgotten Realms
Birthright
Dark Sun
Msytara
Planescape
Ravenloft

Though I liked what Wizards did by licensing out some of their settings to other companies like with Dragonlance and Ravenloft, but I guess there were no takers for Dark Sun.

You forgot Spelljammer. And Al-Qadim. And... it only proves the point :)

Dark Sun sold poorly enough not to make any big effort to bring it into 3ed by WotC. However, semi-official remake appeared in Dragon and Dungeon magazines and there is the official Dark Sun portal http://www.athas.org/ which does a conversion too.

No good reason.

I really want to play again. It seemed really difficult, but it was fun. I also have to admit that since nobody bothered to explain anything to me, and I was just there to fill in the blank that I had no idea what was going on, other than when it was time to fight. If they bring some of the old ones back I hope that is one of them.
