Just wondering if anyone has used 3 Dragon Ante in game yet. I picked it up last week, and have quickly become addicted to it. The game play is quick to pick up but there are a ton of strategies to use and a lot of flavor to learn. I love how the dragons themselves have unique traits, almost like personalities. Like how Coppers are very flighty and hard to keep in your flight. And how Silvers feel like everyone’s friends. And Blacks are just selfish.

So I have played a ton of 3 Dragon Ante but have yet to bring it into the D&D game. There is unfortunately a very good reason for this. The game is too long to do much else for the day. As a group we play D&D once every week for about 5-6 hours. Squeezing in a card game that is going to take anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours (yep have had a couple of those) seems to eat up far too much time from the actual D&D game.

If time is a problem, use one of the optional rules to keep the game from running too long.

• Play a set number of gambits—such as five or ten—for a shorter game.
• Set a time limit for the game, then play one final gambit after reaching that time limit.

I dunno, we typically finish the game in just 3-5 gambits anyway, but then again, we tend to be a little cutthroat when we play. The last game ended with me in lead with two other players with small hordes left. I had been saving up weak blue dragons, and did a color flight. Each one triggered, meaning everybody dumped 6 more gold into the stakes, and then the color flight activated to make them pay me even more.

I knew I was going to win no matter who won the gambit, and it was enough to push two of the other players into negatives. Didn't win the gambit with that weak hand, but it didn't matter, it was enough to let me win the game overall.

Good strategy means you can win pretty quickly. Spend the first gambit or two just saving up good cards so you can just go through and hammer the table for the rest of the game. Especially if you can do powerful color flights, that'll make you damn near unstoppable when you keep getting 10 gold from everybody and then go on to win the stakes on top of that.

Remember, its just as much about screwing the other guy as it is about winning the hand :D
