It's my first day here, and the forum went down. What are the odds? :D

I'm playing a paladin in a 3.0 game for the first time, and I've come across some points that confuse me. They tie into this issue: I'm looking at the difference between the "Magic Weapon" and "Bless Weapon" spells.

At first, it looked as if Magic Weapon was redundant. Then someone pointed out that Bless Weapon doesn't actually GIVE you a +1, it only lets the weapon affect creatures which can only be affected by a +1 weapon - and, of course, has the critical, DR penetration, and extra damage effect against evil creatures.

But Magic Weapon makes the weapon blessed: "If the character is a good cleric, the cleric of a good deity, or a paladin, the weapon is considered blessed, which means it has special effects on certain creatures."

So why would a paladin ever cast Bless Weapon?

My guess is that some of the effects of Bless Weapon are not duplicated by the "bless" effect of Magic Weapon from a good divine spellcaster. Perhaps the crit auto-backup and evil DR penetration, for example. The problem is, I can't find anything in the PHB or DMG that tells me what the effect of blessing a weapon is. Bless Weapon, yes, but not a separate description of a weapon which is "considered blessed".

Am I missing something?
