I would suggest that there is a third category whereby a given book has no edition link. Hero Builder's Guidebook is not really edition-dependent. Neither is Stronghold Builder's Guidebook. I suspect afew others could fall into this same category.

You may wish to add a 3.25 section which could include books which hadn't completely shifted over to 3.5, and even include 3.0 material for which a 3.5 update has been made available:

Contains some/much 3.5 material:
Unapproachable East
Races of Faerun
Savage Species

Updates Available:
Ghostwalk (separate update)
Fiend Folio (3.5 update booklet)
Monster Manual II (3.5 update booklet)

Manual of the Planes (3.5 update booklet)

Look at the publication date. If it's in or after July 2003 then it's 3.5.

Here's a hint: it was published in April 2005

Good on ya for compiling this list. When I first got back into d&d earlier this year, I was terribly confused as to what book was which edition of the game ... I've got it all figured out now, though.

Just thought I'd mention that there was the Psionics Handbook for 3.0 (hence the reason the 3.5 one is called the Expanded Psionics Handbook).

There's also the 3.5 Dragonlance - War of the Lance Campaign Book (http://www.dragonlance.com/products/SVP-4002.aspx) (Oct 2004), which is for people like me who hate what they did to Ansalon in its latest incarnation.

You have missed a few things. If you are going to include Dragonlance, you should include Kingdoms of Kalamar, Ravenloft, and Oriental Adventures as well. You have also missed a fair few booklets, nothing major but still important. Lair of the mad alchemist would be an example. It appears you have not included any of the fantastic locations. Also, you should have a 3.25 section for Fiend Folio and Ghostwalk. This thread is a great idea, and I think you would benefit by visiting this website, which no doubt lists far more stuff than I can remember that you have missed.

Keep it updated and complete, and eventually they'll have to sticky it.

Also, she's got a "3.x" section inbetween 3.0 and 3.5. Perhaps just move Fiend Folio and Ghostwalk (I assume that's what GW is) to the 3.x section. After all, 3.25 isn't a real edition. It's just something people have come up with to reflect that some late 3.0 books incorporated some soon-to-be 3.5 material in them ... I think "3.x" is just fine.

OK... I mean okay, there you go. I think 3.25 would be better, because "x" has a connotation as a primary variable, so it looks like she is unsure of where they go at this point. I do see what you mean about 3.25 though. Maybe if it were to be called "intermidiate ruleset" or "transitional." No need to flame, though.

How was I flaming you? I certainly didn't mean to ... I'm sorry if you took it that way.

Since you're being all pedantic, though, I'll point out that "OK" isn't an abbreviation for "okay", but rather the latter is just the phonetic spelling of the former. Some people believe "OK" stands for the deliberately misspelled "Oll Korrect", which is often wrongly attributed to Andrew Jackson, but no one is really sure ...

BTW, thanks for expanding your original post.

Also, I see what you mean about "3.x". Perhaps it would be better if Celestine put "3.25" there instead, although I, for one, knew what she was intending with the "3.x". The fact that she put them in between 3.0 and 3.5 sort of suggests the whole "transitional" thing.

What does "OK" stand for?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Cecil:

This question seems like such an obvious candidate for your column that someone must have asked it before. But on the chance no one has, here goes: what does "OK" stand for, and where does the expression come from? I've heard a lot of different explanations over the years. --Norm, Chicago

Dear Norm:

Yeah, and it's about time I got things cleared up. Despite the fact that the origin of OK was conclusively established 30 years ago, few etymological dictionaries, even recent ones, give it accurately. On the contrary, some persist in giving equal time to explanations that have been discredited for decades.

Eric Partridge, in Origins (1983), says OK derives from the OK Club, which supported Martin "Old Kinderhook" Van Buren in 1840. That isn't wrong, but it's only half the story.

William and Mary Morris, in the Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins (1977), mention the OK Club and give several other theories as well, including the off-the-wall idea that OK comes from "Aux Cayes," a port in Haiti noted for its rum. They imply the matter is still shrouded in mystery.

Baloney. The etymology of OK was masterfully explained by the distinguished Columbia University professor Allen Walker Read in a series of articles in the journal American Speech in 1963 and 1964.

The letters, not to keep you guessing, stand for "oll korrect." They're the result of a fad for comical abbreviations that flourished in the late 1830s and 1840s.

Read buttressed his arguments with hundreds of citations from newspapers and other documents of the period. As far as I know his work has never been successfully challenged.

The abbreviation fad began in Boston in the summer of 1838 and spread to New York and New Orleans in 1839. The Boston newspapers began referring satirically to the local swells as OFM, "our first men," and used expressions like NG, "no go," GT, "gone to Texas," and SP, "small potatoes."

Many of the abbreviated expressions were exaggerated misspellings, a stock in trade of the humorists of the day. One predecessor of OK was OW, "oll wright," and there was also KY, "know yuse," KG, "know go," and NS, "nuff said."

Most of these acronyms enjoyed only a brief popularity. But OK was an exception, no doubt because it came in so handy. It first found its way into print in Boston in March of 1839 and soon became widespread among the hipper element.

It didn't really enter the language at large, however, until 1840. That's when Democratic supporters of Martin Van Buren adopted it as the name of their political club, giving OK a double meaning. ("Old Kinderhook" was a native of Kinderhook, New York.)

OK became the warcry of Tammany hooligans in New York while beating up their opponents. It was mentioned in newspaper stories around the country.

Van Buren's opponents tried to turn the phrase against him, saying that it had originated with Van Buren's allegedly illiterate predecessor, Andrew Jackson, a story that has survived to this day. They also devoted considerable energy to coming up with unflattering interpretations, e.g., "Out of Kash, Out of Kredit, and Out of Klothes."

Newspaper editors and publicists around the country delighted in coming up with even sillier interpretations-- Oll Killed, Orfully Konfused, Often Kontradicts, etc.--so that by the time the campaign was over the expression had taken firm root nationwide.

As time went on, though, people forgot about the abbreviation fad and Old Kinderhook and began manufacturing their own etymologies. Here's a sampling:

(1) It's a derivative of the Choctaw Indian affirmative "okeh." Andrew Jackson, who figures in many stories about OK, is said to have introduced the word to the white man.

(2) Another Jackson story has it that he used to mark OK for "oll korrect" on court documents. In the one example of this that was actually unearthed, however, the OK was found actually to be OR, for "order recorded," a common courthouse abbreviation.

(3) It was a telegraphic signal meaning "open key," that is, ready to receive. Others say OK was used for "all right" because A and R had already been appropriated for other purposes. Big problem with this theory: the first telegraph message was transmitted in 1844, five years after OK appeared.

(4) It stands for O. Kendall & Sons, a supplier of army biscuits that stamped its initials on its product.

(5) It comes from Aux Cayes, already discussed. A variant is that it comes from the French au quai, "to the dock," said of cotton that had been approved for loading on a ship.

(6) It stands for Obediah Kelly, a railroad freight agent, who used to mark his initials on documents to indicate all was in order.

(7) It comes from the Greek Olla Kalla, "all good."

(8) A German general who fought on the side of the Americans in the Revolutionary War used to sign documents OK for Ober-Kommando.

There are dozens of other interpretations, all equally knuckleheaded. Pay them no mind. If Professor Read says OK = oll korrect, that's good enough for me.

If there was money to be made doing so they would. Personally I think that they should have done an exchange for everyone who purchased the 3.0 Core books to where you could turn them in and get your new 3.5 books for $10. Then they could turn around and sell the used books for $10 and they made just as much as selling the 3.5 books except they made their customers happy.

Seriously, this is infinitely more useful than using the product pages. There you can sort by date -or- name, not both and you need to weed through the adventures and novels and crud, or filter the results specifically to get close to a useful list (only, you know, bloated).

That said, I also agree that it should be wizards material only. Which means the Dragonlance and OA settings, but only the campaign setting books. You may even wish to consider "deluxe adventures" like Expedition to Castle Ravenloft only because they are sort of mini settings.

This list serves it's purpose quite nicely. Thanks for putting it together.

This may be a nitpick, but MM2 was released under 3.0 rules, and should be converted to be used in a 3.5 game.

MM3 and MM4 are both 3.5 ready.

So you can get MM1 either way, MM2 for 3.0 only, and MM3 and MM4 for 3.5 only.

Hi, I have not read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been suggested before but it would be great if each book on the list was hyperlinked to its product description in Wizard's product database. Thank you for the wonderful suggestion and your words of praise both of you.Celestine - if you just put in hyperlinks to the product page for each book, that should be enough, as each page will have additional links to the other extras associated with each book (such as web enhancements, art galleries, and the like). You could also then just have a single link to the 3.5 Update Book page, as most of the 3.0 book updates are all in the one free downloadable pamphlet (although I think they've recently separated them out into separate chunks as well ...).

In the list it shows MoP 3.0 as having updates. Can some one point me to what updates it refers to?
Yes. Link (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a)

Thank you that should save some time. Well I might as well get started...

FYI, there ARE other Dragonlance books listed in the WotC product pages ... I don't know if they're "official" or not, but I would assume they are since they're in there.

Also, what about the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer?

Wasn't there a book called The Shackled City or some such... I belive that would fit under Super Modules (1-20 adventure) It was a compilation of a $^%#$ load of Dungeon Material. Come to think of it there was another one called the Year of worms or something

As others have said, Shackled City is published, under license, by Paizo. The hardcover book compiles the 12 adventures that ran in Dungeon Magazine, a "missing" 13th adventure, and a bunch of other stuff to pull the campaign together.

Age of Worms was the next "adventure path" to appear in the page of Dungeon. As of now, there is no announced hard back for that compiliation. Rumor Mill says WotC has refused to grant Paizo permission to print it as a hardback.

As I go through and provide the links I will make sure that I add anything I missed.

Are those novels, perhaps? I don't have access to the catalog while at work to look.

There's the Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home and the More Leaves ... the others I saw were undoubtedly novels.

EDIT: Whew boy ... I just looked again, and the Leaves ... book is from 1993!! That's gotta be the only 2e thing in the product listing, plus it predates WotC by 4 years or so. What's that doing there? The More Leaves is at least from 2000 .... which could theoretically make it 3.0, but I'm guessing it's still kinda 2e. So never mind about that.

Still - the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer should go under 3.0 ...

According to Amazon.com, More Leaves was a book "packed with supplementary material that included short stories, songs, and recipes." Reading further on the description (found here (http://www.amazon.com/More-Leaves-Last-Home-Dragonlance/dp/0786915161/sr=8-2/qid=1162240861/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-6357358-0768757?ie=UTF8&s=books)), it's seems to be pretty much "edition free." It looks like it's all fluff.

So the leaves are out but the grey is in, duely noted.

LOL - a DM friend of mine from days gone by always used to say "duly noted" whenever one of our PCs would miss during combat.
