I'm confused what type of weapons I'm actually allowed to use with the Vow of Proverty feat?

I know I can't use any masterwork weapon, but could I say have a silver dagger? Its +20gp to make a dagger silver?

What about a cold-iron dagger? Its double the normal cost of a normal dagger.

Or perhaps adamintine dagger? Is this legal? Or is it considered a masterwork weapon?

Simple weapons only.

OR am I only allowed to use simple weapons that have no cost to make like a Club, Quarterstaff and Sling using normal rocks (-1 to hit and 1 size category less damage) instead of Sling bullets???

I'm a little confused.

Thanks.

Any simple weapon. Use a sling or quarterstaff only if you want to keep to the spirit of the rule; RAW would let you use a crossbow.

Silver and Cold Iron weapons are not automatically masterwork, so strictly speaking, they do not violate the Vow. Adamantine weapons ARE automatically masterwork, so they do.

But many things about the details of VoP don't work. You can carry food... but not water. You can use a crossbow but not a sap. It automatically breaks itself.

So VoP's precise requirements pretty much have to be houseruled. Precisely how this is done varies from DM to DM. Personally, I favor sticking to the spirit of the vow - no weapons costing more than 1 gp, no equipment but one day of food, a waterskin, and a sack to carry them in. And once you get the Sustenance ability, you can't even have the food/water/sack.

What is RAW?

I keep hearing that term but not sure what it means exactly

I am guessing it has something to do with the way it is written?

silver dagger sounds expensive

you cant have anything more than 25gps total... in worldly possessions.

I wouldnt allow a silver dagger but I guess by the rules it is under 25gps but that wouldnt leave you with much else.

I thought it lists the weapons you can use?

RAW? Rule As Written is my guess.

Speaking of RAW, as written in the PHB, Rogues can't use a Sap either. Of course, they corrected that with errata. Is there an errata for BoED?

I would allow the use of a Sap, if it was my game.

Rogues were indeed given Sap proficiency in the Errata. And RAW does indeed mean Rules As Written.

I keep hearing about this vow of poverty thing, but what the hell does it do? Why would people willingly cut themselves off from the majority of items?

At 20th level you would get a +5 Exalted bonus to hit that is considered good and magic, energy resistance of 15, ability score enhancements of +8/+6/+4/+2, DR 10/evil, true seeing, regeneration, +3 to all saves, you don't eat or drink, you don't breathe, freedom of movement, +15 in varied armor bonuses, endure elements, and 10 bonus exalted feats.

Note that there is a forum for VoP and other BoED questions- it is called BoED, it's in the Mature area.

Lots of people can't or shouldn't access the mature boards. Do you want your kids to learn about unmentanable topics in a nudey bar?

I have to disagree with this point... how can you feed the hungry if you don't carry food? There is a feat in the Green Ronin book Medeival Player's Manual that lets you do the loaves and fishes thing. You can just keep dividing your food among all who hunger. To use it, you must start with some food.

Addendum, if the VoP character does not expect to be in a position to perform charity, then I would agree that carrying useless material goods would be right out.

You can carry all the food you want for that purpose, just like you can hold on to that 10000gps gem until you get someplace to donate it.

You have to not use the items and give them away to the ones who need them. As long as your not carring the items for yourself

Yes it even says that this doesnt give up your rights to your share of the party loot in the rules.

You are expected to give it away to charity

Yes, and in my mind, should be as zealous about getting more treasure to feed and clothe the homeless as the greediest non-exalted PC would be.

Always wanted to play a VoP wizard who adventures so he can fund a huge school that educates the poor shildren, and gives them a good meal too. Maybe a boarding school for the homeless kids?

He would feel that the best way to fight poverty is make sure everyone is either educated, or learns a trade.

He would be an odd sort, always claclutating and budgeting, to make sure the money he was earning for the school helped the maximum amount of people possible. An odd take of the VoP mindset, but I think I could make it work.

the sad thing is, VoP does not permit a spellbook, by the rules. Which sucks, a sorceror wouldn't quite fit the concept I had, as they're not nearly bookish enough.
Ellanon

Bah! Any character with ranks in Knowledge (Economics) and Profession (Bookkeepping) is bookish enough for anyone. :D

That's similar to how my VoP character runs. He hires poor people to help him build houses, then when they are finished, he gives them the house they just help build, plus payment for the work to build it. This way, he can teach them useful skills, shelter, and an economic starting point from which to build.

My biggest problem with the VoP as worded is it doesn't allow VoP people to work their crafts, as it forbid the use of tools. My GM waived that restriction so I can carpent, but it was a bad idea to begin with.
