3e or 3.5, advice please... [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-25-04, 05:46 PM I bought the 3e core books awhile ago, but haven't had much time to play until recently- and I find out about 3.5ed. Are there significant changes to the rule set, and if so, significant enough to warrant the $90 price tag of a new set of core books?

All the newer books are supposedly 3.5 compliant. But to be honest, I have only come across one thing that confused me. (There was a prereq feat in the 3.5 book mentioned in a newer accessory that I hadn't heard of since I don't have 3.5).

In general, there are a handful of minor changes and some consolidating of a few loose rules, and some balancing issues with some spells, etc.

And as it says at the beginning of any D&D book...they are just guidelines anyway. If you thumb through a 3.5 book (at the store) and see something that you want to use, use it...don't spend $30 to justify altering a rule.

02-25-04, 06:26 PM The 3.5 rules are a little bit clearer and better, but, well, I'm not sure ANY RPG is worth $90, much less one you already mostly have.

02-25-04, 07:13 PM All you need is the SRD to deal with 3.5. I wouldn't even bother trying and would just get a small 3.5 to 3.0 conversion guide.

If you are goint to play only and not DM, I'd just buy the player's handbook.

If you are going to DM, I'd get that plus the Monster Manual. Of the three, the DMG is the one you'd need the least.

If you prefer, downloading the SRD (for free) will save you a lot of money, at which point I'd say all you need is the PHB for a handy reference. Then you can pick up the MM and DMG at your liesurel.

02-25-04, 08:18 PM Play with what you have until you find a 3.5 group. Then get the 3.5 Player's Handbook. That's all you'll need, and you won't even need that until you join a 3.5 group.

(And if you pay full price, you're shopping at the wrong stores.)
