4.0 had destroyed my life [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-19-07, 10:29 AM This is not an intent to flame, or an angry rant of a dissaffected youth. This is a simple statement to WOTC, thank you for ending my favorite hobby. ADnD touched my life growing up, but then I forgot about it for many years, until the coming out of 3rd edition, which rekindled my love of the game. I eagerly snapped up Core books and suppliments with a passion, and then came the first snag...3.5, new rules, new options, new costs. I took it in stride as my 3.0 took up only a meager few inches on my shelf, and the spent cash was not that high. Switching to 3.5 is a change i do not regret, and in the past few years the enjoyment has been just as high as the total amount spent. However I simply cannot validate the cost of buying the new 4.0 edition. Even though I am excited about all the changes I've heard about, and the online content to be offered, I simply do not have the pockets deep enough to consider rebuying (for all intent and purpose) re-mechanic-ed copies of books i already own. So I would like to raise this post as a rally flag, for all like minded gamers, who see the death of Dragon/Dungeon Magazine (something that made me happy to open my mail box amidst the avalanch of bills and junkmail) and the oncoming of 4th edition a reason to say, "Thank you, but no thank you...I'm done now." So in closing, thank you for the years of enjoyment WOTC, and I will continue to enjoy the products of yours that I own, but you have taken from me the only hobby I have, as with 4.0, 3.5 will be ended, and shortly after obsolete and limited with no fresh content. So my 3.5 bretheren, stand with me, and together we shall find solace in continued 3.5 play.

08-19-07, 11:28 AM I'm confused. Can you still play 3rd Edition, even though 4th Edition is coming out? I think you exaggerate the point a little. Sure, a new edition is coming out. But do you think everyone is just going to drop 3.5 edition as soon as the 4th edition comes out? I'm sure you'll be able to play 3.5 and 4 in duel sessions (Monday Session - 3.5 Edition, Thursday Session 4th Edition). Kinda like two campaigns running at the same time sort of thing, just running different rules.

And who is not to say 4th Edition will flop? Maybe 3.5 Edition will be around for longer since 4th Edition may come out and everyone hates it (i don't know, i haven't checked and i am only just getting used to 3.5 Edition). Point being, people will still be playing 3.5 for a while, like the person above me said, some people still play 1st Edition (i know one guy, but i don't know who he plays with though) don't be so disheartened.

How do you think i feel? I only just started D&D around a month or so ago. I got the Core Rule books (except the PHB) a month ago and i am still hunting for the PHB. Now i will need to purchase more books and learn two games at the same time. So, i haven't really got much play value out of them compared to the rest of you. *shrugs*

Oh well, point being, i think people will still be playing 3.5 for a while longer yet and 4th edition may flop and need redoing when it gets released, so don't worry about it yet. Worry about it in a year or two and even then, nothing may happen.

Nono, little miss. If you read between the lines between my post, I was just being a little sarcastic. It was actually in full support of the opening poster's comments, as well as of the sentiments of many players here.

As for you investment, little lady, I suggest that you buy very strictly "core" material, very carefully picking and choosing what special classes to add. Truenamers is a popular choice...you shouldn't need more than 2 more books to fully enjoy 3.x edition, including the PHB on its way from amazon.com...used, of course?

Some people are angry to be angry and saying really dumb things. While I was standing there one angry gamer did a drive by and bellowed, "So what am I supposed to do when I want to play D&D while camping in the mountains? So much for your electronic stuff." The volunteer responded, "Take your books with you... Like you have been doing all along until now."

A second angry gamer busted in before I could finish my convo with him, "You are just going to break the game more. I mean, you have to have a calculus degree to figure out skill points." I didn't even give the volunteer a chance to talk, I responded for him. I said, "That's funny. I taught my son who is in the first grade how to play D&D a month ago and he figured out his own skill points without my help."

Come on people, my advice is this, "Calm down, wait until you see more of the product, don't be drama queens, give it a chance." The stuff I saw at GenCon gives me the impression the game is getting better. And let's face it, as a serious gamer we all buy at least one new book every month anyway. So whether that book is 4.0 or 3.5 you were going to spend the money anyway. Why are you getting angry about spending the same money on a new version of the game that looks like it will be a better product anyway.

If 4e is as fun to play as 3.5 is, I'll gladly join in.
If it is not, I'll continue to play 3.5.

In either case, my life and its perceived worth will be unaffected.

I hardly got into 3.5, I have a few books (all in my sig) and I am really hyped about 4E, I really want to be part of it and to get into D&D fresh.

There is nothing wrong with 3.5E, so no need for a new edition. Maybe far more people than WOTC calculated will actually stay with 3.5E and 4E will be a marketing failure.

I know a lot of gamers I talk to don't want "Dragonball Z in their fantasy" (we all own "Tome of Battle", so know what we are talking about) so it sounds like many will stay with 3E simply because it ain't broke and doesn't need any fixing.

So write off WOTC, OP, but don't write off playing 3.5E.

08-19-07, 02:33 PM s'not the end of the world. I still play by 3.0 rules, WHEN I play. Honestly it's GM's discretion what rules you play by. My first GM played by whatever rules from whatever version suited him for the campaign. More fun that way, methinks. :)
