Well, no reason to let this thread die, so what does everyone want to see in fourth edition when it eventually does inevitably come out?

I personally want to see two things.
Classless and Leveless
New Magic system that doesn't revolve around x spells per y amount of time.

(To the OP, rumors have been speculating when it will come out for over a year and a half now but nothing official has been said. When it does come out though, expect you books to be about as compatible as 2nd edition is to 3.0 or 3.5. Basically useful as flavor fluff only (mmmmmmmmm...cotton candy).

I've never understood the sentiment of wanting to completely and utterly retool D&D this way. I don't think that a system like that would be bad. I just think that if D&D were like that, the only thing 4.0 and the previous editions would have in common would be the name of the game!

4.0 will be based on the saga edition, and will have the following base classes: Warblade, Psion, Jedi, Fast Hero, and Bard. Bard will still suck. It will be entirely and perfectly balanced, with each class getting their powers per encounter rather than per day.
The bard will still get the most skill points out of all the classes, which will make it the equivalent of the Druid in 3.5, because all abilities will depend on skill checks.

The core races in 4.0 will be elf, wood elf, high elf, drow, dwarf, warforged, and kobold.

I'm hoping 4.0 won't come out for at least a couple more years. But when it does, I think wizards would do best to make it as compatible with 3.5 as possible. That is, obviously there will be fixes for the magic system so many people don't like, and the polymorph issues will be fixed in the core rules, etc., but it would still use the basic setup of skills, feats, saves, stats, etc. That way, most of the prestige classes and feats and monsters and whatnot from the dozens of D&D supplements out there will still be essentially useable, with perhaps minor modifications.

I say this, because consider this: Even if Wizards wants us to buy all-new books, and they'll come out with dozens more supplements, they're not going to just convert everything we have in 3.5 - they'll be adding new stuff. So, if they make it at least close to 3.5 compatible, we can all convert to the new rules, keep buying all the new books they come out with, but not lose all the thousands of dollars of stuff we already own.

This is probably pretty unrealistically optimistic and hopeful, but I think Wizards would do well to consider it.

Also, this was hilarious:

4.0 will use an array of 27 stats, and will see the return of THAc0, the easiest attack roll system ever. If you have a masters degree in a math field.

Also, the core books will be printed on parchment made from human skin, bound in the souls of the damned.

According to forum forcasts, 4.0 came out back in November.

unbeknownst to the world, WotC made all their books with a special paper that once a new edition to the game comes out, causes all books from previous editions to spontaneously combust.

forcing everyone to either buy the new rules system or play other RPG's. unfortunately, since most gamers store all their games in the same place, when the WotC books combust, it takes all your other game books with em. causing you to either buy the new rules system or go out and buy all your old RPG's again.

I'm hoping 4.0 won't come out for at least a couple more years. But when it does, I think wizards would do best to make it as compatible with 3.5 as possible.

If 4.0 is compatible with 3.5 it cannot be called 4.0 more like 3.7 or 3.9510b or something.

4.0 requires an entirely new overlaying structure to warrent the progression to a new prime number. It will still likely have the same understructure (saves, Hit Dice, levels, ability scores, etc) however, without that it cannot really be D&D.

For a 4.0 edition to be even remotely successful the books would have to be released in a similar format to the Rokugan Clanbooks where all the crunch appears in two formats, one for 3.5 the other for 4.0. The rokugan books did this to enable the use in both the d20 system and their original legends of the five rings game system.

Whatever the theories, 4.0 will be disasterous for Wizards/Hasbro unless its insertion is brought on by the lack of sales in 3.5. Currently 3.5 is still going as strong as 3.0 did when it was released so your 3.5 books are safe. Given the demand by the average forum user for more campaign settings and less rules, there may be a change in the air for future 3.5 releases. But, given the amount of adventures and fluff filled content in the more recent releases, wizards are already addressing the change in pace to ensure 3.5 lives on longer than any previous edition of D&D.

Classless and Leveless
I like class- level-less systems—a lot—but I know D&D will never be that. That's okay. Classes and levels have some appeal sometimes.
I've never understood the sentiment of wanting to completely and utterly retool D&D this way. I don't think that a system like that would be bad. I just think that if D&D were like that, the only thing 4.0 and the previous editions would have in common would be the name of the game!
People propose class- and level-less because it offers more customizability so they don't have to make their characters fit the mechanics rather than the other way around.

What would I like to see?
Classes that are designed to be themselves rather than to fit some old idea of what they should be (paladin, druid, cleric, monk, fighter).
Races that weren't just thrown together for some fanboy (gnome, half-elf, half-orc).

What I'd like to see? A system of ECL that allows me to play as ANYTHING I want. Squid, rustmonster, darkmantle, purple worm, everything! It will be much more presise, so 1 class level does not mean 1 ECL. It might mean 10, or more or less. This way, for a race like kobold who are juuuuuust a little weaker than 0 LA, they will be a lower ECL to compensate, meaning I get more class levels. Classes will, of course, also change dramaticly. Also, less restrictions. Alignment restrictions like lawful monk and non-lawful bard will be eliminated so I can have more freedom. Classes will get more generic, being just like building blocks for a character, not archtypes. Also, Int restrictions for animals etc will be gone, as they make no sense. Octopus has at very least 3 int.

Just what I want, anyway. And no, I'm not weird because I want to play a squid.

They could call it 4th ed. as long as there were significant enough changes. For instance, if they totally revamp the magic system along with whatever other minor changes they make, it would no longer be 3rd ed. However, they could do that and still use feats, skills, prestige classes, etc., allowing 3rd ed material to still be used within the 4th ed framework--most of it, anyway. That's what I was thinking.

Of course, who knows what will actually happen, or when. I'm just making a suggestion.

Also, in 4th ed., combat will be so streamlined that you'll roll d%. 1-50, you win, 50-100, you lose. And since we all know PCs don't actually run away, that means you die. But hey, it's way faster than the current system.

Bah. I for one can't wait for 4e to come out. It will still be Dungeons & Dragons, but I hear that WotC is going to pull the OGL and create a new system: the d30 system. THAC0 is being pulled off the shelves and revamped and will now be called THACWTF. The base race will only be human, elf, and dwarf. Halflings were apparently devoured by all the half-orcs in the edition change, but the half-orcs were somehow poisoned by the halflings they ate. The gnomes, who don't exist anymore, have remained strangely quiet about this deveopment.

D&D 4e: d30 will return to its roots, and now the only classes available will be Meat Shield, Wizo (they thought wizard took up too much ink), Healer, and Bard. Bard will go from one of the most balanced classes to the most broken, being able to do a combination of what the rogue, psion, warblade, warhulk, druid, monk, and spellthief did in 3.5. There is no longer gp. The entire multiverse's economy is based off of electrum (some shmuck in R&D thought it was time this little used currency had its share of the limelight).

The good news is they are scraping the aligment system for a much easier to follow color-coded system. How this system will in fact work has not yet leaked to the public.

All in all, come September 24th 2007, I'm going to be lined up at my gaming store waiting to buy the Player's And Dungeon Masters Monster Manual Handbook Guide, which will be one giant, 20 pound book bound in, as previously mentioned, the souls of the dead.

Instead of buying supplements, you will buy Theme Books, which are collections of pages that supposedly go well together. You will also get multiple copies of the same page even though you don't need them.

Hells yes you are. :P

Given what I've seen in the various newer releases, it looks to me like WotC is still tweaking 3.5, so working on a new edition is just plain stupid. There were a couple of things mentioned here that I agree with, though.

More Flexibility: Even given the number of feats available, every person playing class X ends up being just like every other class X being played out there! I like the talent tree concept intro'ed with d20 Modern. Maybe something like that could be worked into the system.

Retooled Magic: I have to admit, the magic system has remained virtually unchanged in D&D since its inception. I understand why the system was chosen, but I think it's long since run its course.

Oh, and no squids.

Okey, here is draft one of "D&D 4th addition: Cavienn-World!"

Classes
Rock: Better than Scissors, Drow and Fighter
Paper: Better than Rock, Drow and Fighter
Scissors: Better than Paper, Drow and Fighter
CoDzilla: Better than everybody and Fighter
Fighter: He tries, God bless him.
Elf: Better than Drow and Fighter
Drow: Sad. Still better than Fighter

Mutliclassing
No.

Kombat
In kombat, you are randomly partnered with one enemy. You add your level times 5 to a d%. If you have a class that is better than than your opponents, you add your level times ten. Anyone not parnered up can aid another to add their level times two (or 4 if they are better than the enemy) to this roll. Whoever rolls lower dies. Anyone aiding doesn't die. This continues until everyone on one side dies.

After kombat, everyone is revived cause you have all the money in the world. You get the oponents level times 4 xp from every enemy you kill. Anyone who aided you gets one fourth the xp from a kill. When you get your level times 8 xp, you spend all xp you have and level up.

Items
To much to deal with. You have enough.

Magic
All magic in the game uses the Cavienn Magic system. This means that it doesn't exist. Anyone trying to use magic instantly changes all their levels into elf levels. Those already elves turn to drow. Drows trying to use magic must write a 10 line minimum emo poem. Fighters instead die.

Adventureing
Kill stuff. Snacks advised.

In 4.0 Rule Zero will be removed from the game. Dungeon Masters (now called Dungeon Facilitators) will not be allowed to ban anything from the game, as that would be against the 4.0 Terms of Service printed in the front of every 4.0 book. The players will finally be able to treat the Dungeon Facilitator the way he was meant to be treated, like nothing more than a Playstation.

But Dungeon Facilitators won’t have to worry, because everything will be completely balanced, except for the bard.

Also, there will be two prestige classes available: powergamer, and roleplayer. Powergamers get to add 500 to their percentile role, and roleplayers subtract 50. But there will still be staunch defenders of the roleplayer PrC, because it's clearly so much cooler, and powergamers suck.

My 2 cents...

Poison - should be done by doses. Base DC every time a PC gets hit with it the DC increases by 1 until they fail. Once failed they cannot fail again to the same poison until the effects were off. Also a vial of poison has a DC of base + 20. This will avoid dwarves with a high fort save from shrugging off poison attacks (auto save).

I still think that xp debt would be better than loosing a level. I got the idea from Everquest when I was playing. If a player gets xp drained below their current level they just have to regain it back (or take minuses).

Bard - no longer has spells, use Marshal auras.

Ranger - remove spells, use a mix of ranger and scout abilities.

Paladin - any good alignment, if they have a patron deity (must be within 1 alignment step of deity and good), improve abilities for higher level (mix of prestige class abilities that simulate a paladin).

Races - if they have a favored class, they must have a prohibited class.

Attacks of Opportunity - either remove or fix (prone is broken).

Facing- should be added.

Classes - must have ability prerequisites in order to take (i.e. base classes rogue, fighter, wizard, and cleric have a less of a requirement other classes have a higher prerequisites will have better abilities).

Spell DC - 10 + ability mod + 1/2 caster level.

I was looking at the new Star Wars. It's pretty much like 3.5 save for the talent trees (pick your class path). It looks like an interesting concept. Not sure if they will add any sub-races or expansion races (illumian or goliath). I would like to see animals put into the players handbook though for mounts and animal companions (if still available).

This is what they did in previous editions.

You can see why D&D dropped it. Too bad they can't do the same with other sacred cows, such as classes without a talent system.

Also the poster was being sarcastic.

i predict the revenge of THACO in 4.0 ................

As I previously mentioned, THAC0 is getting a makeover, and in the 4.0 switch will be called THACWTF.

While arcane magic users (Wizos) in 4.0 will use the superior Cavienn spell system, arcane magic will still, unfortunately, hold no candle to the new divine magic system, called "My god is tougher than your god...ism" or something. The name is still in the WotC Systems of Magic Naming Comitee and will not be released to the public until late August.

Apparently, in the new d30 system, to figure out if you want to roll high or low on your d30, you must first roll a d%. Then you must cross reference your result with an accompanying chart (which the players can see, according to the aforementiong ToS) and depending on the situational circumstances, you will either add or subtract your modifier to your d30 result.

Enjoy!

I was thinking Monte Cook has all these great products. I almost think of those as 4th edition stuff so to speak. Does anyone else play any of his Diamond Throne or Ptolus.

Just stop trying, Randy. It's not working. No one beleives your stupid doomsday hoax. That site sucks. It has ONE game. They know nothing about inside stuff. Just cause you got kicked out of some clubs doesn't mean you have to run a smear campaign. Grow up.

And yes, I actually beleive that you are Randy about 1,000,000,000 times more than I beleive that site.

Amen. Oh, and Dontgothere is now officially on my 'ignore' list.

I so want to play a black hole elf!

Also, because of the deadliness of combat, every player starts with 5 extra lives. Like the Mario games. You can also get more lives, for every 100 gold coins you collect. (Of course, since the economy has already been established to be based on electrum, this is harder than it sounds.) You can also get more lives through Mushrooms of Protection. But they're minor artifacts.

Oh, and they make you hallucinate, too. Which could get interesting in kombat. You have to subtract 50 from your d% roll, because you might accidentally target a hallucination. This is cumulative for every mushroom you eat.

So the red mushrooms acts like a enlarge person until you get hit, then you shrink back. Are there going to be any leaves that turn you into a were-raccoon , or suits that make you a toad or able to throw hammers. The glowing flower is the best, you can shoot a fireball (2.5 radius) for 1d6 dmg. Then the major artifact is the Star talisman, player can kill target creatue with a successful touch attack for 1 minute.

I think the leaves and toads fall under special "recreational" materials.

Yes, but the leaves make you high, and the glowing flower is actually just a result of the hallucinations from the mushrooms you ate. As is the purple nano space parrot.

Don't ask.

Just hope that in your randomized rules packs, you get the full set of item rules, otherwise you won't be very effective in kombat, with only the base 50% success rate.

Eventually you'll get the full item rules. Only trouble is that there will be many "editions," if you will, of these rule packs and the item rules are spread through out. It's kind of like MotG meets D&D 4e: d30. It'll be awesome!

Unfortuately, yes, collecting the gold pieces for your extra lives will be difficult because of the aforementioned electrum based economy. However, this is made somewhat easier by the appearence of giant coins with the image of the tarrasque on it. Collecting just five of them will also gain you an extra life. So there a few ways you can do such. I, however, recomend finding a "swarm" of kobolds, and using the Bard's monk jump class feature, seeing how many kobold heads you can bounce on, one to the other, until you gain enough "xp" to get an extra life.

4.0 will use an array of 27 stats, and will see the return of THAc0, the easiest attack roll system ever. If you have a masters degree in a math field.

Thacos NOT all that difficult to understand. All you have to be to make use of it is slightly better off than stupid.

:bump:

Well, I'm ready now! I've got:

my D30,

my +17 Monomolecular Bastard Sword of Brilliant Energy Shocking Burst and Thermonuclear Fiery Burst,

my +9 transdimensional plate mail of psionic metamagical invincibility,

AND my ring of infinite hit points!

Who else is going to be ready when WotC skips 4th edition, 4.5, and 5.0 entirely for a revised version of Toran_A_Sunder's 4.0 THACWTF combat system?

Will 6th ed be a streamlined merging of THACWTF and d% Kombat? Or maybe they'll bring back AD&D! D&D will use Kombat, since it's so simple and streamlined, and AD&D will use the impossible-to-figure-out THACWTF rules...

If there is ever a 4.0, I will boycott WotC.
As long as 4e doesn't come for a couple more years, I'll be a happy camper.

Note I said I would be 4e, not 4.0, because if they ever pull that X.5 bull:censored: again, I will hurt someone.

Which is why after the 4e release they will call the update the Revised 4th Edition.

Don't forget 4th ed AD&D. They're bringing that back too.

Or is that not until 5th or 6th ed?

No matter, they'll be out within a year of 4th ed anyway. Go THACWTF!

Can't wait for the new basic D&D stat blocks, too. It'll save so much room in adventures!

I really do hope that if 4.0 are to be, it will first be in.. like.. 10 years or so. Really. If not more. Take a look at my situation:

I started playing Dnd in my after-school centre. One of the educationists (I think that is what it is called in English) were playing dnd and thought that "Hey. Dnd could actually somehow help the kids in their social skills". So I was about 9-10 years old when I got my first book. Players handbook 3.0 ed. A little bit later I bought Monster manual 3.0 ed. and MM 2. So... Now I am 13 years old. And I now know how to read/write English. So I wanted to update my books. So I bought PHB, PHB 2, DMG in 3.5 ed.

I first got to know 3.5 ed. now. Here in 2006-2007. AND I am about to buy MM 3.5 ed. So if they make 4.0 ed. And it is so much better, and it wont be possible to buy 3.5 anymore. Then I have to update all over again.

And now you know my sad "Damn! These 3.5 is actually costing money" The think is that I really wanna expand my Dnd book collection but at the same time I also want to update my MM. And the other books that I just updated.

And now you know a lot more about me:D Thanks for taking time:weep: ;)

I just don't get what everyone is soo hyped up about. If anything what there going to do is take all the new base classes, add them in with the orriginal core, then re-work the core rules, plus add all the new rules we have in the new books, and re-balance EVERYTHING, but all the additional books will still be valid, the feats would remain the same, except what was changed in the new 4.0 book and all the other book probably would remain the same and they would simply put out more stuff and not double back.

IF they do not do something along these lines they would be-betraying their customers like Sega did to the video gaming world with all those new systems they kept on bringing out. So if they dont they would probably wait another 2-5 more YEARS before 4.0.
